Brief History of Bartlett Bartlett started 1n 1882 when the railroad was completed from Larimore to Bartlett, uncle of Bert Bartlett who served ln the Spamsh Amerlcan War In the early days lt was a town of 17 salons and 15 lumberyards One or two stores were housed ln tents One bullding was made of sheet 1ron over a wooden framework which was owned by a man known as Sheet Iron Brown The flrst church servlce 1n Bartlett was held 1n a saloon by a traveling preacher The seats were made of planks put across empty beer kegs at each end Materlal for the steamboat Mlnnle H was shipped to Bartlett in 1883 and taken to Devils Lake where the M1nn1e H was bullt The f1rst Bartlett school flarge one roomj was bullt 1n the 1880's and is now the Loren Stautz home told Pat Norton farm Just one m1le west of Bartlett I The present Bartlett school was built 1n 1898 Geo Fulton who farmed flrst operated a grocery store 1n the '9O's and had the post Off1Ce the store Another early postmaster Charlle Walker who had h1s post office ln the waiting room of the depot, was also depot agent at th1s t1me The present postmaster is Mrs Marvin Cruse W H Standlsh was an early attorney in the 80 s He was also the flrst township clerk when the townshlp was organlzed and one of the f1rst census takers 11890 census, He also owned and operated the Standlsh House la hotelj whlch was later moved from Bartlett to Lakota in the early 80's and was located where the Lakota Hotel 1S now A large flre 1n the early 80 s together wlth the fact that many moved to Lakota and many moved westward to Devlls Lake after the rallroad reached Dev1ls Lake accounts for the decreases 1n the buslness places and populatlon of Bartlett from a once boom town Colonel E Sm1th who was a colonel 1n the ClV1l War and his son who served ln the Spanish Amencan War and also 1n World War I where he attalned the rank of Colonel was killed 1n action 1n France He operated a grocery store and also had a farm known as the Minko Valley farm near Hamor Another C1V1l War Veteran Emory Cole operated an elevator at Bartlett before mov1ng to Doyon, where he operated a lumberyard Appeman homesteaded in 1882 The Cathollc Church was bu1lt in the early 80 s then was vacant for some time and was purchased by the Lutheran Church of Doyon and moved to Doyon in 1948 where lt was added to the Lutheran Church The Methodist Church of Bartlett was bu11t in the early 1900's A son of Colonel E Sm1th was a doctor for a t1me in Bartlett at the turn of the century Mr D1ssmore was one of the early lmplement dealers The first blacksmith was Frank Goldhammer John Hove was the cashler of the Bartlett State Bank Vtfhitney and McDoyoll had a general store for several years and sold it to Thomas Thorson who had it for some time Charles Schroeder operated lt for a short time and then later was operated by the Preeberg Brothers The last one to operate the lumberyard and hardware store was T F Emerson Robert Barron was the last one to operate a grocery store in Bartlett There is no grocery store there now Edgar Weaver was elevator manager and moved to Doyon in 1918 Erich Keck was depot agent for a time in 1916 He entered service in World War I in 1918 at Graften N D Basil Foley was Bartlett mall carrier for many years There was a livery barn and several implement dealers in Bartlett at the time Mr Peterson is the present elevator operator at Bartlett for Mr Sundeen Wendel Hanson is the present depot agent I O 1 1 . l I ll ll o n 0 I ' I n o n u ' I I ' I Q n Q . The first serv1ce station was owned and operated by Hugh R1ce iHarvey s brotnerj and 1S the present Carrie Resvick residence Mr Schroeder operated the present Se1 V1Ce statlon in Doyon The Edgar Weaver famlly arrived here about 1918 Mr Weaver was elevator manager for the St Anthony Elevator Company Cformerly Hersing Elevator Company, until 1924 1925 The family moved to Webster where Mr Weaver is elevator manager at the present time Their son W1ll1am who is sports announcer for WDAY TV station channel six Fargo N D fNationa1 Broadcastmg Systeml, was born at Doyon and attended the flrst five grades here The Rick Keck family came to Doyon in 1920 He served as presldent of our schoolboard for a few years and later served as clerk for about 26 years until he left Doyon being succeeded by Adnan Anderson the present clerk The Tronson family came to Doyon in 1943 from Hatton N D and moved 1nto the home formerly occupied by the Sundeen family who moved to Lakota In 1925 we had a bank robbery in Doyon Mr Nicolson was president at the time He and the cashler besides a few customers were present at the time The customers had to 11e dovm on the floor Mrs Harvey Rice KElfie Aronsonj was in the bank at the time The robbers made their get away They were caught later 1n Minnesota a few months later on another hold up They confessed the Doyon hold up There have also been a few train wrecks here and close by on the main line of the Great Northern In 1912 the englneer on a passenger train was killed when he fell out of the cab as the engine rolled over In 1930 a passenger train ran into the rear of a freight train In the early fOI'1119S between Crary and Devils Lake the bo1ler of a passenger train exploded and kllled the engineer and one or two others in the engine cab The debr1s was strewn all over Cause of when the second sectlon of the train ran 1nto the rear of the first sectlon Many were kllled and many were injured This year the Western Star ran into a stalled truck and kllled the dr1ver near Mapes N D We have endeavored to make a true account of the history There may be some errors as this material has been collected through interviews and the per1od of tlme covered dates back to the later 19th century I am deeply indebted to Mr and Mrs Robert Anderson for the informatlon given and photos furnlshed by the pictorral section and to Mr and Mrs Harold Bj erke EI'1Ck Keck Iulia Braniff Mrs Selmer Aronson Mrs Althea Rice Mrs William Stewart Ir of Southam Mrs William Blaufuss Harold A Ingberg COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS CRAMSEY COUNTY, 1904 P D Norton fdeceasedl 1907 Laurena Vanier 1909 I A Haig ldeceasedj 1920 Hazel McKay ldeputy Anna Rotherl 1928 Anna Rother ldeceased 19551 fdeputy Emma R Foleyl 1939 Delma C Bratvold lG1adys Smlth deputyl 1946 Gladys Smith KMrs Thorsonl 12.
