office and living quarters there Later after being used for a pool hall it was operated by Les Ferrier who sold beer unt1l hard llquor was legalrzed It was also operated by Charles Wrlllams for a couple of years later operated for a time by Mr and Mrs Harold Bjerke until it was purchased by Fritz some years ago The homes in Doyon were built between 1901 1906 The Chrlstofferson home now occupied by Harvey Rice was moved to Doyon in 1902 from the Martin Rassmussen farm Mr Abar lived in what IS now the Bill Bvan's residence and was owned by Mr Doyon for the use of h1s elevator manager Mr Doyon had his own residence out on the hill which burned down in 1908 He then moved 1nto the present Braniff home and lzved there for many years during this time Fred Hall built the house now occup1ed by the Bjerke family Charles Reb11lard CReb1llard family moved to Spokane Washlngtonl the house now occupied by A C Willlams Paul Iverson the house now occupied by Selmer Aronson Peter Klyver fthe flrst banker! whose home was built by the Tovsmsite Company lived in the house now occup1ed by the James Tronsons Family Emory Cole built the house now occupied by the Leonard Fisk family Bill Moore bu1lt the house now occup1ed by the Bill Leith family Andrew Brander bullt the house now occup1ed by Mr and Mrs Richard Tronson and formerly occupied by the Eric Keck fam11y for many years Albert Anderson built the house now occup1ed by Harry Arneson fThe Albert Andersons left Doyon 1n 1925 for Portland Oregon Albert Ward Hopkins and his mother and formerly owned by Iohn Berg Ole Anderson owned the present Dodgson home wh1ch he had moved to Doyon from h1s farm The LeDuc home Cbullt by the Tovmsite Companyj was moved south of Lakota about 15 years ago It was located behind the present Robert Anderson home During the first period of the house bulldmg in Doyon 1901 to 1906 Henry Ford organized the Ford Motor Company at Detroit Michigan 1n 1903 and Barney Oldfield one of the greatest dirt track drivers of all tlmes drove Henry Ford's racer No 999 establrshing a record of a m1le per mmute The first doctor in Doyon was Dr McLean who had his office above the present Leith store There was also another doctor that was here for a short period of time The first barber was Dan Haverstrike who had his shop in the pool hall Other barbers were Frank Williams Les Ferrier Ed Rutten Phil Ritter and Charles Morrls The first depot agent was Mr Barry succeeded by Neil Daby Other agents were Philllps Art Nelson Brick Keck and John Zohn who served between the time Rick left until his return The first mail carrier was Herbert Miller Harvey Rice was mail carrier for 30 years until his retirement 2 year ago Wallace Froehlich is the present carrier Crary and Bartlett route Other postmasters since Mr Wilson and Chas Doyon are Ted Orvik Dexter Rice lfor many yearsl, Agnes Munro and Don Leith Ted Orvik had drugstore and post office Dexter Rice a grocery store and post office in the old hall building and Agnes Munro had post office and restaurant in the former bank building Don Leith is the present postmaster and grocer Selmer Aronson and Ray Bjarneson are former Standard Oil bulkman At the present time Leonard Fisk is the Standard Oil man here Others who have operated restaurants besides Mrs Ole Anderson, the first operator, 1903 to 1915 are Agnes Munro, who had her restaurant in the former bank building and Carrie Resvick, who had a restaurant in her present home: 1950 1952 . In 1904 11m Miller bu1lt and operated an 1mplement shop between CBITIG Resv1ck's present resldence and the old hall This was later on operated by Iohn Le Duc until 1909 and was vacant for a tlme and used as a hall before the old hall was bu1lt 1n 1910 This bu1ld1ng was moved to the present Iohn Schroeder locatlon and 1S now the west part used as the shop and the other part was added later Also 1n 1904 Andreos Anderson CRobert's fatherl bu1lt a store where the former Ford Garage 1S now He sold the bu1ld1ng to Fred Chamberlin whose bu1ld1ng burned down ln the wlnter of 1906 1907 In 1905 Albert Anderson fRobert's brotherl bullt h1s lmplement store whlch was located between Chamberlln store and the l1very barn operated by A B1ll1ng Cbrother ln law of Emory Cole the owner J The Great Northern Depot was also bullt 1n 1905 In the flre of 1906 1907 whlch started ln the l1very barn the l1very barn 1mplement blllldlflg and Chamberlm Grocery Store were all destroyed The f1rst add1t1on of the present schoolhouse was bu1lt ln 1907 The Ford Garage bu1ld1ng was also bu1lt 1n 1907 by Fred Chamberlin who operated a store here untll he sold the bu1ld1ng to C I Arneson Chamberlm later moved to Crary Fred Hall bu1lt a l1very barn behlnd the house now occupled by Bjerkes 1n 1907 In 1908 Andreas Anderson bullt a store tRobert's fatherj now occupled by Don Lelth whlch he operated untll he d1ed ln 1918 Albert Anderson fRobert's brotherl operated the store from 1918 untll 1925 when h1s famlly moved to Portland Oregon Albert Anderson passed away f1ve years ago Elmer Dahl Pete Hlldre Lawrence Johnson CHarold Bjerke's stepfather, George Anderson and Iud W1lll6mS and now Don Le1th have all contlnued h1s bu1ld1ng In December 1909 Doyon was 1gnited by another f1re which destroyed the drug store operated by Iess Turpening lwho died shortly afterwards, and was used as a drug store operated by Mr St Iohn who later went to Lakota and then moved to St Paul The upstairs of the buildmg was used as a hall until the present town hall was moved 1nto Doyon 1n the 30's The upper grades of the school held classes in th1s old hall Mr White being the grade pr1nc1pal The telephone office was moved in from Crary It later burned during the night when the Community Club met at the schoolhouse The first telephone office was in the drug store and operated by Arthur Vernon A Mrs Metcalf a widow from Lakota built the first telephone line The following are the telephone c, erators to the present time Minnie and Alice Iverson Mrs Snydal fBertha Rasmussenl Mrs McDonald Mrs Lawrence Nicloson Clocated ln apartment in back of the bankj Mrs Leola Duke fin the buxlding that burnedl Iimmey Elams Know of Dev1ls Lake, had bought the telephone offlce before 1t burned and then the telephone office was moved to Bjerke's house and 1S now operated by Mrs BJ erke The telephone office that burned was located where the Cement foundation now stands The f1rst schoolhouse ln Doyon also stood on the spot where the cement foundation stands It is now the front room of Robert Anderson's residence Mr Doyon moved it to Anderson s present location and divided it into two rooms and used it for living quarters for Mrs Collins his first bookkeeper who was a widow with one son Mrs Minme Bjerke tHarold's motherl purchased the house from Mr Doyon and btult on the front bedroom She sold it to George Williams who in turn sold it to Mr Widener who d1ed shortly afterwards and the house was finally sold to the Robert Andersons who added a second bedroom and kitchen Albert Anderson had a home ovmed by Delco plant and furnished lights to his store house and for Dexter Rice. The first serv1ce station was owned and operated by Hugh R1ce iHarvey s brotnerj and 1S the present Carrie Resvick residence Mr Schroeder operated the present Se1 V1Ce statlon in Doyon The Edgar Weaver famlly arrived here about 1918 Mr Weaver was elevator manager for the St Anthony Elevator Company Cformerly Hersing Elevator Company, until 1924 1925 The family moved to Webster where Mr Weaver is elevator manager at the present time Their son W1ll1am who is sports announcer for WDAY TV station channel six Fargo N D fNationa1 Broadcastmg Systeml, was born at Doyon and attended the flrst five grades here The Rick Keck family came to Doyon in 1920 He served as presldent of our schoolboard for a few years and later served as clerk for about 26 years until he left Doyon being succeeded by Adnan Anderson the present clerk The Tronson family came to Doyon in 1943 from Hatton N D and moved 1nto the home formerly occupied by the Sundeen family who moved to Lakota In 1925 we had a bank robbery in Doyon Mr Nicolson was president at the time He and the cashler besides a few customers were present at the time The customers had to 11e dovm on the floor Mrs Harvey Rice KElfie Aronsonj was in the bank at the time The robbers made their get away They were caught later 1n Minnesota a few months later on another hold up They confessed the Doyon hold up There have also been a few train wrecks here and close by on the main line of the Great Northern In 1912 the englneer on a passenger train was killed when he fell out of the cab as the engine rolled over In 1930 a passenger train ran into the rear of a freight train In the early fOI'1119S between Crary and Devils Lake the bo1ler of a passenger train exploded and kllled the engineer and one or two others in the engine cab The debr1s was strewn all over Cause of when the second sectlon of the train ran 1nto the rear of the first sectlon Many were kllled and many were injured This year the Western Star ran into a stalled truck and kllled the dr1ver near Mapes N D We have endeavored to make a true account of the history There may be some errors as this material has been collected through interviews and the per1od of tlme covered dates back to the later 19th century I am deeply indebted to Mr and Mrs Robert Anderson for the informatlon given and photos furnlshed by the pictorral section and to Mr and Mrs Harold Bj erke EI'1Ck Keck Iulia Braniff Mrs Selmer Aronson Mrs Althea Rice Mrs William Stewart Ir of Southam Mrs William Blaufuss Harold A Ingberg COUNTY SUPERINTENDENTS CRAMSEY COUNTY, 1904 P D Norton fdeceasedl 1907 Laurena Vanier 1909 I A Haig ldeceasedj 1920 Hazel McKay ldeputy Anna Rotherl 1928 Anna Rother ldeceased 19551 fdeputy Emma R Foleyl 1939 Delma C Bratvold lG1adys Smlth deputyl 1946 Gladys Smith KMrs Thorsonl 12.
