Some in stripes are intermingled, Others blaze in one bright hue, So we'll wear the white carnation, And in Honors sacred light We'll defend our own bright colors, E'en the Purple and the White. Thro' the happy years of school life, Midst the scenes to us so dear, As the thorny path to knowledge We bravely strive to clear, Or we manifest our prowess, As we scale some other height, While we work for dear Old Downsville, And the Purple and the White. When we've grown to men and women And our locks are turning whiteg When fast shades Life's purple evening, Into its deep darken'd night, Let us lose our melancholy, For with morning's coming light, We'll remember each our school-days 'Neath the Purple and the White. yawn i 4 I . Jean Burritt joined the class and at the close of the year Grace Van Hulsteyn, Jean Burritt, and Norma Akins left us. We began the year with 55146.38 in the treasury. To raise money we sold some stationery with Lucille Tum- minello and Larry Fitch as high sellers. We also had a bake sale and a dance with the Sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR In our Sophomore year with Mr. Williams as our advisor our officers were: President, Merritt Russell, Vice President, David Davis, Secretary, Marian Smith, Nancy Thompson, Treasurer, Kay Brunner. This year Jean Van Druff joined us and Ray Bivens, Harold Lake, George Dion, Dolly Barnes, Richard Tompksins, and Jean Van Druff left us. At the beginning of the year we started collecting paper, which we stored in 'Mr. Penrose's barn for future sale. After this came Freshman initiation. We also had two benefit movies, Al Jennings From Oklahoma and Darling How Could You. We sold D. D. S. banners at basketball games, held a spaghetti supper, sold stationery, and had a Leap Year Dance. All these activities turned out to be quite successful. JUNIOR YEAR With Mr. Herfort as our advisor our officers were elected as follows: President, Merritt Russell, Vice President, Joanie Sarri, Secretary, Marian Smith, Treasurer, Kath- ryn Brunner. During this year Shirley Hafele, Daris Havens, Nancy Thompson, Dora Jacobson, Joyce Finkle, Gail Simmons, and Henry MacDonald left us. This was a busy year for us with concessions at the Mardi Gras, pancake supper, spaghetti supper, Jr. Play, Little Dog Laughed, under the direction of Mrs. Muriel Sarri who put up with our antics for over two months. We also had the traditional Junior Prom, which I'm sure Kathryn Brunner will never forget. We then sold candy from April to the end of the school year. SENIOR YEAR With Mr. Herfort as our advisor, officers were: President, David Davis, Vice President, Kathryn Brunner, Secretary, Marian Smith, Treasurer, Betty Neff. Since this is our last year in good old D. C. S., we had lots of money to raise. We sold candy during lunch hours and at basketball games, had concessions at the Mardi Gras, sold Christmas cards, bake sales, benefit movies, held suppers and our Senior Play Foot-Loose, under the direction of Mr. Samuel Plotkin. The Senior Class of 1954 would like to thank everyone who helped make our Senior year a success. I -. 1. tm 1 tl Lx-4' 0. it -1 MAX RICHARD BALDAUF Dick j.V. The following were elected: President, Larry Duckwallg Vice-President, Robert Bellowsg Secretary, Ginny Williamsg Treasurer, Jerry Stephensong Student Council Represent- atives, Ginny W. and Joan White. We were also honored to have Kay MacDonald elected as Secretary of Student Council. Our first event of the year was a Camera Raffle. We all worked hard and it was a great success. This seemed to set the pattern. We held a Spaghetti Dinner in November and came out well on top. Our rings came just as school reopened for the New Year. They are truly beautiful and we are as proud of them as can be. Our next big event was our Junior Play. We presented it in March, and it was in turn tremendously successful. Everyone is looking forward to next year when we can pre- sent our Senior Play and do it as well as our one this year. The climax to our events this year was our junior Prom. It was certainly the most beautiful and best arranged Prom ever held in D.C.S. Those who attended will long remember the gorgeous decorations, lovely music, and the fun they had. We look back upon our Junior Year with a bit of nostalgia when we remember all the things that have happened and all the fun we have had, but we are looking forward to our senior year with great expectancies. -25- K7 ll tu.-- ROW ONE-Mirr Donning, D. We are going to take a trip by car through our school year of '54, Ronnie Tillapaugh drove as our president. Marley was right there to take over the wheel if anything went wrong and Paul studied the maps as our secretary. Louise handled our expenses which were very few. Many times we got on the wrong road, but Mr. Flannery was there to steer us back. Audrey had her fare paid as far as Brooksville, Florida, where we were very sorry to drop her off. She will not ride through any more of our school years with us as we had planned that she would at the beginning of the trip. After we left Audrey, we had a flat tire which caused a short delay. With this spare time, some of the girls joined the Soccer Team, while a few of the boys decided they wanted to bat their way through the fall season. When October 31st rolled around the calendar we stopped at New York and pur- chased three squeakers which were used at the Mardi Gras for your pleasure and to help finance the rest of our trip. We also had a Pokey race. With the excitement of the Mardi Gras, we were delayed at starting out again. To make use of time Don Mills, Ronnie T., Paul, Gary, Danny and Floyd joined the J.V. Hoop Team with Gloria and Patty cheering them from the sidelines. The ride through Sli was a pleasant one for us. Most of our spare time, which was given to us by mishaps was used toward our activities and our studying of subjects. We look forward to our trip of '55. -27- 1. Sie iii ROW ONE-R. Vernoldf, I. Six man football was not played in the county by any school for the first time in many years. Next fall it is believed that soccer will definitely become the fall sport in this end of the county as it is in the other. D. C. S. played a few games of soccer and baseball informally with neighboring schools. SPRING BASEBALL 1 9 5 3 The D. C. S. varsity baseball team enjoyed a successful spring season as they won seven while losing four. Dave Davis twirled creditably with help from MacDonald and Tompkins. Charles MacDonald was selected to represent the school in the annual all star game at Cooperstown. The purple and white climaxed the season with a triumph over Andes, their second triumph over the Mountaineers. ..37- was riff S' es set. 5 : 't- 24 SWK. -. Jack Dalrymple and Harold Neff showed good promise of future varsity stardom as they led the team in scoring. They were ably assisted by Ward Neff and Don Mills. Harold Neff won single high game honors with 19 and barely beat out Dalrymple from the foul line with a 4896 average. VARSITY The D.C.S. varsity started the season with seven veterans on its squad from the 1952-53 team which won the Section 4 Class C Championship. The quintet was marked from the beginning and fought all the way for its wins. Win they did, as they rang up 16 wins as against 2 losses during the regular season. In the play-offs the Eagles downed Andes 47-35, as Larry Duckwall led the way with 175 Rog Neff poured through 24 as D.C.S. beat Hartwick 59-485 and in the Class C Championship game Walt Tompkins and Dave Davis tallied 22 apiece as Downsville won its second straight sectional crown 68-46 over King Ferry. At Barton Hall, Cornell, D.C.S. played the Class 13 champion, Marathon, triumphing 51-47 for their 20th win to end the season. It was really a team victory all the way. Citing any one individual would be difficult indeed. Roger Neff and Larry Duckwall supplied the height. The latter came on fast during the winter to nail down a starting berth. Walt Tompkins and Dave Davis were brilliant in the front court. Larry Fitch and Larry Saunders pulled off many fine defensive and offensive plays. Gerry Stephenson, Bob Edwards, and Merritt Russell gave D.C.S. bench strength that every champion must have.
