Oh, What They Put Up With! Depending upon how it is used and controlled, freedom can be either a benefit or a curse. Two hundred years ago our nation gained its freedom. If we wish to maintain this freedom, and not allow it to become a curse, the leaders of tomorrow cannot, by social or peer pressure, be tyrannized into making decisions which could result in the loss of the freedom we now enjoy. Harold A. Wentzel. Asst. Principal In this Bicentennial Year, I still believe in the freedoms my ancestors were seeking such as freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom from oppressive taxation. To me freedom also means enjoying our natural resources such as our rivers, lakes, and forests! Freedom means getting the food we need, getting the proper medical treatment, education, and having the right of free movement. These are a few freedoms that I feel we have. At the same time the wishes and desires of others to enjoy their freedoms must be respected. Raymond F. DiSerafino. Principal Our forefathers structured a constitution to meet the basic needs of a new nation. This document, which was designed to respect the rights and freedoms of man, guaranteed its people the opportunity for the pursuit of happiness. The freedoms guaranteed under the American way of life did much to develop a society that encouraged its people to be responsible, energetic, competitive, creative and spirited. Our heritage clearly reflects the advances and contributions our society has made in the field of education, medicine, law, technology and productivity. It is evident that this nation has the ability and the resources to meet the needs of its people. The freedoms which enable man to pursue happiness are paramount. As we study the past, live the present, and project a view into the future, we note that our society and the needs of its people are changing rapidly. Our Constitution has successfully coped with all of the challenges and perils of the past. It will continue to meet the needs of the future so long as the people’s rights, freedom, and the opportunity for the pursuit of happiness are guaranteed. Elmer J. Hemberger, Asst. Principal

Guidance: Bring Two Sharpened No. 2 Pencils Marjory Appleby. Counselor George A. Pastino. Counselor Merle Geist. Secretary Joseph Creamer. Counselor Charles J. Shagren. Pro Coordinator Mane Jenkins. Secretary Cynthia Fitz. Counselor If it were possible to combine the wealth of Rose Kennedy, the attractivmess of Mary Tyler Moore, the sensitivity of Carl Rogers and the intellect of Henry Kissinger. I would like to be that person. Because that is not possible. I would choose (even if I had the power) to be no one but myself. — M. Appleby Into each life |oy and laughter must be found. W. C. Fields was one who could be serious, one who had the ability to make people laugh, to forget their problems, to enjoy living. Such a person is truly a necessity and always an asset to mankind. — J. Creamer I think that Lucille Ball has an interesting life. She is an excellent business woman, she has succeeded in her chosen field, and she has made her own particular contribution to American culture, by entertaining three generations. She will probably be as well known 50 years from now as she is today. — C. Fitz Thomas Jefferson was a man of great wisdom. He is best remembered as the author of the Declaration of Independence and as the third president of the United States. Little is known of his many inventions, his farming and his decimal system of coinage. He truly was one of the greatest thinkers that every lived. It would be an honor to be half that brilliant. — G. Pastino. I would choose Benjamin Franklin because he was a great statesman, inventor, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Today he has a multi-million dollar company named after him, and he has his picture on the $100 bill. On top of all this, the man really knew how to have a good time. — C. Shagren 23
