As an instructor, you have instilled in us a sense of self-discipline and of pride in our work. You have been instrumental in bringing variety and interest into our English courses through your achievements in the elective system. Outside of the classroom, your guidance to yearbook staffs of the past is appreciated and your perseverence is greatly admired. In view of all this, we dedicate OUR YEAR 1973 to you, Mrs. Sylvia Holder. A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows and rows of natural objects, classified with name and form. Taken in and totally accepted as a member of the De Silva family, I quickly learned that people are people all over the world. One’s color, religion, house, and clothes have little meaning when the business at hand is learning how much alike we all are. I wish everyone could have had the wonderful chance I had and I thank everyone who made it possible. 16 FREDDIE FROM BOLIVIA Words could not express my feelings about my year here in Dowingtown High School. I would like to express my appreciation to the teachers and all the students. Thank you very much for everything. I will always keep in my mind all the things that you have taught me. Enjoyment, friendship, and understanding I found here. Thank you for being my friends. I shall always remember you. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY The most satisfying change I have seen over the years has been the improvement in the courses and activities offered to the students. Today, students have more opportunities for self-advancement than ever before. The members of the Class of ’73, even though they probably wouldn’t admit it, are better prepared for the future than any of their predecessors. Mr. Wentzel, Vice-Principal Teaching is a rewarding experience because we work with the fine young people who will one day lead and determine just what our country and world will be. Teachers have the opportunity of seeing young lives develop into mature lives. And the good teacher not only instructs and, hopefully, inspires his students, but learns from them as well. Mrs. Miller, Social Studies Teacher SUPERINTENDENT’S 1973 YEARBOOK STATEMENT The paradox suggested by the class theme, “Good Times, Bad Times”, motivates reflection upon the advantages we all enjoy so much in 1973. However, no need exists to merely catalogue our assets, to compare them with those of the less fortunate or to weigh them against the negative. Rather the Class of 1973 and all of us could with much merit consider what is a “good time” or an asset. The essence of “good” in mankind must be humanism with its well-identified values of love, faith, selflessness, virtue, honor, compassion and service to others. In this context it has been said that the only things we really have are those we have given to others. Certainly our “good time”, our asset, our advantage is the opportunity to advance mankind along the road of humanism and it is for our work in this field that we shall be known. CHARLES M.MICKEN Superintendent of Schools 20 ROW 1: Mr. Robert Hadfield (Treasurer), Mrs. Mary Sheridan (Secretary), Mr. Glen Wagner (President), Mr. Raymond Williams (Vice President), Mr. Robert Mason, Mr. Chester Martin; ROW2: Mr. Sebastian Ruffini, Rev. Carl Koppenhaver, Mr. Warren Supplee, Dr. Charles Micken, Mr. Harley Fink. Mrs. Sheridan ADMINISTRATIVE SECRETARIES Mrs. Rowan Mrs. Oswald Mrs. Kibler Mrs. Nellius Mrs. Meyers MR. DISERAFINO, PRINCIPAL As graduates, you will be leaving the familiar routines of your high school environment and will be entering that expansive, demanding, exciting, and what is sometimes referred to as that “cruel world.” Each graduate must think realistically; some dreams may go unfulfilled; some goals may be unattainable; and some promises which were built on hopes may be broken. Situations demanding the application of your many concepts, theories, and ideas have now arrived. I sincerely hope you will successfully implement and apply that which you have learned. You must realize, of course, that you must not become discouraged when confronted with your first taste of failure or defeat. Perhaps the wisdom which you have gained from various people, opportunities, and situations throughout your formative years will assist you in the future. Education has helped you to effectively react to changing situations and to rebound from the specter of adversity that everyone experiences in the adult world. My sincere wish for you is that good fortune will be yours to enjoy, that failures will strengthen your will to succeed, and that success, whatever its degree, will be accepted with humility and an awareness that it was achieved with the help of your parents, your teachers and your friends. Mr. Hessinger Director, Special Services Mr. Remetz — Director, Secondary Education Mrs. Skiles OUR FRIENDLY SECRETARIES Mrs. Chalfant Mr. Creamer Mr. Pastino GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT Guidance services in Downingtown are firmly based on the human worth of the individual. Emphasis is placed on personalizing the student’s educational experiences in order to give them relevance in his life. Through guidance and counseling each student is directed toward self-assessment and self-study, giving him insight into his own capabilities and limitations. 25 Mrs. Volk Mrs. Nelms (School Nurse) ENGLISH The new English curriculum is structured for the needs of each individual student. Each nine-week elective taught, whether it is in grammar, vocabulary, composition, speech, or literature, is geared to give the student a practical understanding of his language and an aesthetic understanding of himself and the world in which he lives. Mr. Ax Mrs. Tharrington Mrs. DeMicco Mrs. Bates 27 Miss MacFarland Mrs. Gregor Mrs. Finn (Secretary) Mr. Caskey Mrs. Miller 28 Mr. Appleby SOCIAL STUDIES As a society and a nation, we have inherited both wisdom and problems from the past. The purpose of the Social Studies Department is to give our future citizens the skills with which to analyze the origins of our problems, and, once this is accomplished, tt use the wisdom of the past to work towards solutions in the living present. Mr. Caparro 29 Mr. Witmer 216 NEWS Miss Rubin MATHEMATICS Mr. Leffler Mrs. Mull To help our students in future years, the Mathematics Department instructs in three basic areas: social mathematics for personal living and effective citizenship in our society, technical mathematics for various skilled jobs and professions, and academic mathematics for later work in mathematics and many of the liberal arts. Mrs. Coleman 30 Miss Frizzell Mr. Noble Mr. Hook 31 Miss Hille C SCIENCE Science and its tools will provide the facts and knowledge necessary to make wise decisions in the future. In good times and bad times, an informed citizen, aware of the threats of various problems confronting him, will solve them through the application of scientific knowledge. 32 Mr. Morgan Mr. Schmidt Mr. Knickerbocker Mrs. Reti Miss Costello 33 Mr. Reber Mrs. Shagren Miss Honzo Mrs. Fails Mr. Angle Mr. King BUSINESS EDUCATION The Business Education course, basically designed for those students who do not plan to attend college, offers three sequences: secretarial, bookkeeping, and clerical. During their senior year, eligible students participate in a work program which gives them valuable experience in the business world. Mr. Meade Mrs. Mento 35 INDUSTRIAL ARTS I Mr Holder The study of Industrial Arts occurs through the following areas — photography, graphic arts, drafting, metal, wood, electronics and power mechanics. Students in industrial arts build projects, perform experiments, complete troubleshooting and repair procedures. and accomplish other “hands-on experiences. As a result, students gain valuable knowledge which they can utilize in future vocational and avoea-tional interests. Mr Matter Mr DiBeaedetto Mr Gdsut 36 VH HOME ECONOMICS Miss Janiec In order to prepare students to adjust to living in the world of work and to maintain and strengthen home and family living, it is imperative that specific emphasis be given to a broadened Home Economics curriculum. Miss Foley Mrs. Donaghy Mrs. Laurento LANGUAGE The Foreign Language Department aims to widen the horizons of its students and to break down the barriers created by different words which express identical thoughts and hopes. Mrs. Noll Mr. Mathias Mrs. Susman MUSIC Mr. Ifert The quality of any individual’s life is shaped in considerable measure by his aesthetic experiences — of pleasure, of insight, of understanding and appreciation of fulfillment. To enrich the life of the individual is the ostensible purpose of our department. Mr. Ditzler Arts and Crafts were “out” a decade ago. Mass production and machine technology were the accepted, “polished” forms in the field. Today, handmade and individual art, although it is not as flawless, is demanded by makers as well as users of art throughout the whole world. The new improved art curriculum, with courses for varied crafts and fine arts, is designed for the discovery and enrichment of the individual’s talents. Mr. Leonard Mrs. Desmond 40 Mrs. Hartley LIBRARY The objective of the library program is to provide materials, equipment, and processes which are relevant to the school’s curriculum and meet the needs of the students and faculty. An effort is made to provide all types of media on varied levels and to provide for the recreational reading interests of the student body. Mrs. Grebey 41 Mrs. Weakland GENERAL EDUCATION The curriculum and program of the General Education Department is geared to the working world, with emphasis on a work-study program. The program is designed to prepare the individual for different job situations that he will encounter in his working years after graduation. Mr. Shagren Mr. Makosky DRIVER EDUCATION The goal of the Driver Education Department is to give the student as much experience behind-the-wheel as possible. The student is introduced to the problems of safe operation of the automobile during the Sophomore year in classroom instruction. This program helps as many students as possible to become safe, intelligent drivers. 42 Mr. Johnson Mr. Booth Mrs. O’Neill (Secretary) PHYSICAL EDUCATION It is the purpose of this department to promote normal physical growth, vigor, and endurance, and to help youth make wise use of their leisure time by exposing them to the various activities in physical education. Mrs. Hufnell Miss Shiffer Mr. Chiccino 43 ROW 1: Mrs. Marcocci, Mrs. Daylor, Mr. Childs, Mrs. Fennelly; ROW 2: Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Philips, Mrs. Potter, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Sigle. Mrs. Nugent, Director of Food Services. Mr. Sangrey Hard at work Mrs. Ulissi CUSTODIANS AND MATRONS Mr. Blank Mrs. Travaglini Mr. Titus 45 Mr. Blevins Mr. Stevens SOPHOMORES After the first few weeks of school, the sophomores become sufficiently familiar with each other so that the class campaign and class elections can be held. This period is characterized by campaign promises, speeches, and colorful posters in the halls. The first important class activity is the Sophomore Magazine Drive. This is an important activity since the class hopes to accumulate money for important future activities and events. The big event of the sophomore year is the Sophomore Dance, preceded by much hectic activity with committees working furiously on posters and decorations. Miss Costello, Soph. Class Advisor As a sophomore, the jump from junior high to senior high is not as great as it may seem at first. The first couple of weeks you get lost in the halls, but eventually you learn your way around. With the Lionville and Downingtown junior highs joining together, there is a disadvantage in that you don’t know everyone, but an advantage in that you can make many new friends. Coming into the senior high, you look forward to making a sports team, or your favorite club, going to dances and plays, and just generally getting involved in school activities. The homecoming display, the magazine drive, and the Soph Hop allow us to develop school spirit and enthusiasm for our next two years at DHS. Lynn Radcliff, Soph. Theseus and Hippolyta represent the common sense level. The level of nonsense, incongruity and absurdity is presented by the Athenian lovers, Lysander, Demetrius, Hermia and Helena and by the workmen, who turn the tragic story of Pyramus and Thisby into a comedy. Titania and Oberon represent the level of fantasy, indicated also by the juice of the flower called love-in-idleness. What’s so funny? And I could be home watching T. V. You’ve got to be kidding! Which way did he go? 85 JUNIORS Like other classes before us, we face many challenges and problems. Two of the biggest problems are lack of unity and apathy within our class and our school. In order for us to have a successful senior year, the Class of ’74 must get it all together and eliminate these problems. Larry Washington, Jr. Class President The junior year for the Class of ’74 has been full of activity — some helping the class treasury, most losing, but all fun. The year started with big ideas for a homecoming float; however, grandeur was lost between conception and reality. “The Battle of the Bands” was the juniors’ fall dance, with the “Untouchable Combination” the victor and the dance itself the loser. The candy sale was the only activity to boost the treasury. With the remaining funds, the annual class play and the junior prom, “Evening in Paris,” were held. Laurie Usher (V. Pres.) The more you work at something during practice, the harder it is to give up during the game. You must learn to work with other people, your teammates and coaches, because you can’t do it by yourself. I was a winner and a loser, and winning is everything; no one loves a loser. Sports teaches you that sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you. Norman Raison, Offensive back and defensive middle guard — What you learn about is life. That’s what sports is all about — Life. The whole thing is played out in an afternoon. The happiness of life. The miseries. The joys. The heartbreaks . . Wanting to win is the point. Not giving up is the point. Never being satisfied with what you’ve done is the point. Never letting up is the point. Mr. Leffler, Mr. Caparro. The 1972 Whippet football season (3 wins, 7 losses) was virtually divided into two halves. Only a poor second-half performance against Interboro and back-to-back one point losses to Fottstown and Springford kept the Whippets from being undefeated after six games. In this stretch, consecutive shutouts against Pottsgrove and Great Valley, and Paul Nicholson’s outstanding all-around performance against G.V. were to prove to be the highlights of the year. The final four games, during which Downingtown gave up 122 points and scored just 8, had Coach Chiccino, last year’s Ches-Mont Coach of the Year, shaking his head and already anticipating next season. With many key underclassmen returning, 1973 hopefully will bring the Whippets back to football respectability. Under the coaching of Mr. Robinson, the indoor track team had its best season since the sport was first initiated at DHS in 1970. In every iqeet the Whippets placed within the top ten teams, an admirable feat considering that as many as forty teams compete in each indoor event. The four-lap relay team of Jeff Warnick, Joe Nicholson, Wayne Cocco, and Kevin Dougherty captured three third-place medals at East Stroudsburg State College. At the Princeton meet, the two-mile relay team, the four-lap relay team, and Wayne Cocco in the fifty yard dash qualified for the championships. Cocco also received a medal in the fifty yard dash at Widener College, tying the school record at 5.9 in that event. The Cross Country runners easily won their first non-league meet against Twin Valley but suffered a one point loss to Boy-ertown. They picked up steam, however, when they outran the West Chester Warriors and defeated the Phoenixville Phantoms by one point. They finished the season by winning their last dual meet over Great Valley. Mr. Pastino, Captain Doug Hahn. Mr. Queen. Wayne Cocco Kevin Dougherty Tom DiOttavio Bob Brown 107 Steve Armstrong HOCKEY This year under the coaching of Miss Shiffer and Miss Bancroft, our Whippettes completed a season with a record of 1-4-4. For the first time in the history of D.H.S., the hockey team was cut from 75 girls to 40 girls. Jayne Tinson and Alexis Ziobro were the only returning varsity lettermen. The team defeated a tough rival, Coatesville, 1-0, and even though they lost to West Chester, the Whippettes played their best game against the Warriorettes. In the last game of the season, the team suffered a close loss to Great Valley, thus giving the Patriots the Ches-Mont Championship. Overall, the team played with higher skill than their record shows. Coach Shiffer is looking forward to a strong team and anticipating a winning season next year with five varsity-experienced juniors returning. The 1972-1973 wrestling team, coached by Mr. Johnson, finished the season with a 6-8 record. Although their team record was not too impressive, three wrestlers finished with fine records. Senior Captain Jim McGuigan, who wrestled at 126, had a record of 12-2; Drew Krapf, the 98-pound wrestler, finished with a 10-2-1 record; and sophomore heavyweight Jim McGowan had seven pins thoughout the season. The team’s greatest effort was their 28-25 victory over archrival West Chester. However, they suffered a disappointing loss to the powerful Wild Cats of Owen J. Roberts. (Larry Brown and Larry Warner, managers, missing from picture). With an overall record of 8-14, the 1972-73 basketball team, coached by Mr. Boyer, suffered an unhappy season and finished sixth place in the Ches-Mont League with a record of 6-12. During the first half of league play the Whippets were 5-4 and defeated tough rivals from Owen J. Roberts and Phoe-nixville. Even though the Whippets shot well from the field in the second half of league action, they lost several games from the foul line and ploughed to a 1-8 mark. Over the whole season, Victor Proctor and Rich O’Connell lead the team in scoring with 257 points and 250 points respectively. Coach Walker’s junior varsity squad raced to a 17-5 season and produced some good talent for next year’s team. The end of all our fun, immaturity, and the protection offered by parents and “high school” is here. It is the beginning of responsibility, insanity, and more fun. We have finally become serious about life, ourselves, other people, and realistic things. We also have finally learned to relax, not worry about A’s and B’s and basic requirements that as sophomores had us out of our heads. It’s scary but sure, and who knows what it really means? Cathy Golden, Graduating Senior The senior year is probably the busiest and costliest of all for a high school student. There are the Senior Dinner-Dance and all night party, senior trip, senior pictures, graduation announcements, yearbooks, and the senior picnic to pay for. To raise money to help pay for some of these activities, the senior class sponsors a senior play, a senior talent show, Senior Serf Day, and various sales campaigns. Most seniors seem to feel that the best activity is commencement, when they finally “throw off the shackles” of school and gain their freedom! From the point of view of a faculty advisor, “senior” is a position for those who desire things to do and places to go. None other need apply! Mr. Knickerbocker, Sr. Class Advisor Patty Mento (V. DANIEL LYONS “Ricky” KATHY THAYER LEE THEIS CHARLES VARHALMI BRENDA L. WHITNEY I JULIUS LYONS ¥ DESIDERATA Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than youfself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons stirve for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are bom of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. — From the Poems of Max Ehrmann Copyrightc 1927 by Max Ehrmann Copyrighte Renewed 1954 by Bertha K. Ehrmann PATRONS Frank Casenta, Jr. Don May Marie Zittle Norris Margaret P. After a delicious meal, we pushed and shoved our way into the Pussycat Lounge for the dance. There wasn’t much room to sit or dance, but the band, Bleeding Kansas, was great! After the dance, it was back downstairs for an all-night party. We played games in the game room, danced to the music of the Untouchables, and ate an early-bird breakfast of pastries and coffee. Sunrise found us exhausted but happy on our way home. PROM 1973 COMMENCEMENT 1973 Commencement Day, June 6, 1973, found all 422 of us ready to graduate. After President Jim Gockley gave the Welcoming Address, Gerry Mingione, Kellie Rowland, Gary McKee, and Torchy Hawes spoke on the Class Theme, “A-wareness. The following awards were presented: the DAEA Scholarship Award to Alexis Ziobro; the Alumni Award to Jim Hasson; the Uwchlan Village League Scholarship Award to Lynn Andress; the John Shafran Memorial Scholarship to Sherry Johnson and Ed Miller; the Miriam I. GOLF The spring sports season was highlighted by the girls’ tennis team finishing with an undefeated 8-0 record and the Chesmont Championship. Lexi Ziobro, Pam Steimer, Tris Miller, and Patty Paradise led the way throughout the entire season. Lexi won the Chesmont Singles Championship while Pam was runner-up in the same event. Together, Lexi and Pam were Doubles Champions in both the Chesmont and the Districts and finished as the runners-up in the State Doubles Championship. Tris and Patty were the runners-up in the Chesmont and District Doubles Championships. The track team finished with a very successful 5-1 season and second place in the Chesmont Championships. During the Chesmonts. Victor Proctor set two new records, one in the high jump with a leap of 6'4 xh and the other in the long jump with a 22'l0 Vi effort. Kevin Mills won the shot put event in the Chesmonts. Victor also went on to become the District I Champion in the long jump. Baseball, lacrosse, golf, and boys’ tennis all had rather mediocre seasons. Our 6-5 victory over West Chester in baseball and Steve Murray’s third place finish in the Chesmont Golf Tournament were the biggest stories to come from these sports. 8 ROW 1: Ed Schmid, Steve Maragakes, Steve Murray. ROW 2: Randy Styer, Terry Basehore. Missing from picture: Scott Webb.
