Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1972 volume:

The Class of 72 symbolizes many things. The yellow, red. and orange colors in the design represent the merrier moments while the darker color symbolizes the more solemn moments. The flowers represent the individuals who together make the class. The flowers are surrounded by trees as we are a class among classes, but above. The mountains represent the climb we have made to reach the moment of graduation. The peaks are a rosy color as graduation will be the rosiest moment for the class of'72. The rainbow represents the future, the time after graduation. The future will seem uncertain, hut there is certainty in the fact that the future lias a share of sad and happy moments. The yellow bird is the bird of happiness. He has carried the class of'72 through many happy moments and may carry us through many more. The Class a? '7«X OUR YEAR PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF PRRDUCERS ADAUMSTRATIOAI Id DIRECTORS FACULTY n SPECIAL EFFECTS MAJOR EVENTS at MAJOR ACTORS SENIORS SUPPORTING CAST UNDERCLASSMEN II z ACT 1 SPORTS 130 ACT II CLUBS I t8 We would like to thank you, Mrs. Miller, for everything you've done to help us. Thank you for your unending patience and your constantly smiling face. Thank you for being so interested in us, our school, and the things we do. To show our deep appreciation to one of the best teachers in this school, we would tike to dedicate the 1971-72 Our Year to you. Thank you. Mrs. Miller. 4 It is because nations lend to stupidity and baseness that mankind moves so slowly; it is because individuals have a capacity for better things that it moves at all. George Gissing The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-trust. He guides their eyes from himself to the spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple. — Amos Bronson A Icon The magnitude and scope of change today are so great that some people are thinking of the present era as a second great renaissance or at least a new age of enlightenment . In this new age we hear and see much of those old ideas of enlightenment which changed the Western World at the time of the American and French Revolutions. For example, the concepts of freedom, liberty, equality, brotherhood and rights were very popular long, long before our present decade and their implementation moved man one giant step down the long and difficult road of civilization. A much greater application of these ba-ic liberating ideas is probably upon us. We will, no doubt, come to know freedom, liberation and equality as no man has heretofore. However, as valuable and desirable as these may be, they, even if fully applied, fall short of providing the civilization that man requires if he is to survive. What man needs is to become truly human and to adopt and live by the great values and ethics that have given him a humanistic composition. Without human values as their foundation, freedom, liberty, equality and fraternity will not long endure and mankind may revert to bondage and the rule of tyranny. K High school graduates have been frequently advised that they have reached a mile stone in their lives, have come to a fork in the road, and arc faced with a moment of decision when they are graduated. Education is viewed by some as being terminal at the conclusion of the twelfth grade. It is and should be a continuing process because it is actually the apprenticeship of life. One educator stated that education should be classified into two categories: One that teaches us how to make a living; and one that teaches us how to live. At Downingtown High School, you have been exposed to an instructional program that encouraged and aided you in the development of fundamental skills. Opportunities and an environment for creative and analytical thinking and the incentives and situations to develop strong work habits have been afforded you. Every effort lias been made by the professional staff for the continuous development of sound attitudes and ethical values. Therefore, the desired goal of our efforts is that the graduates of DHS will effectively and responsibly participate in our democratic society. As an educator I am aware of your needs; as a parent I wish for you what all parents seek for their children: health, hap- piness, and good fortune; as your friend I sincerely trust that your school and the friendships made here will always be a haven should any adversity befall you. The greenhouse was officially dedicated in November 1971 and is now a working part of the Biology Department. The main purpose of the greenhouse is to propagate plants for experimental work in the biology classes. Also the Horticulture Club under the direction of Mr. Burger is making use of the greenhouse. Two projects done this year were the complete propagation from a cutting of geraniums and chrysanthemums. The greenhouse is, by far, a great asset to both the Biology Department and the school itself. 165 Baton Club Advisor: Mrs. l.uurento Modern Dance Ruth Ann Worthington Concert Choir President Dave Venditta Vice-President Joe Driscoll Advisor Mr. Ditzler Secretary Sc Treasurer Ruth Worthington 16 7 OFFICERS 168 Junior Play Senior Play 171 Congratulations to Class of 1972 from DOWNINGTOWN NATIONAL BANK Your Local Hometown Bank East End Office Convenient Offices to Serve You Main Office Lionville Office 701 E.
