Our car of life (lif), n.Qpl. lives (I7vz0 1. The activities of a given time or in a given setting, and the people who take part in them. 2. The time a person or thing is alive, or a specific portion of such time. 3. Period of flourishing, usefulness, etc.; period during which anything lasts. Cover photo by Alex Heckathorn, Orinda, California. YEARBOOK 5WF 1 My home is in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. I am the eldest of four boys in the family and when I return home I will study to be a teacher at the Salisbury Teachers College. This year for me has been the best of my life and I would like to thank the faculty and all my friends here at D.H.S. for allowing me the opportunity to work with you. To all my many, many friends, may God be with you in the years ahead and I am very much looking forward to coming back here. Grant Spangenberg 4 Enjoyment, affection, richness, understanding, and gratitude: These are just a few of the words that I associate with my experience in Brazil. I give special thanks to A.F.S. and all the people who contributed to helping me have this opportunity. An experience which I'll always remember. The warm and loving people will always be in my mind. People where there was no color barrier but what was in your heart that counted. People whose affection and good will was generated to those who surrounded them. Thanks again everyone for giving me this golden opportunity. Diane Carter I only wish that I could be capable of describing my summer of 1970. Fantastic? Educational? Fun? Oh yes, and even more! Words could not explain the friendships that grew there or the warmth that was felt while being a part of my Turkish family. Just try to imagine the excitement of living and sharing with others who truly care and maybe then you will understand more about my summer as an AFS student. Thanks to everyone who helped to make the experience possible for me! 5 Maryalis Worthington DEDICATION ... to a man who lived his life in service and dedication to all who came in contact with him. He inspired all with love and consideration. He strived to build within each student the ability, determination, and desire to become a part of this great country of ours. The patience he had on the field, the interest he had in class, and the love he had in his heart will always be remembered by us. With pride we dedicate OUR YEAR to Mr. Campbell. IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when ail men doubt you. But make allowances for their doubting too; If you can dream and not make dreams your master; If you can think — and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools; If you can make a heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss. And lose, and start again at your beginning And never breath a word about your loss; ... And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the will that says to them; Hold on! If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings — nor lose the common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you but not too much; If you can feel the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds worth of distant run ... Rudyard Kipling 6 7 as we walk hand in hand down the road of life, my mind skips into the future where i see myself with tears in my eyes. for i treasure these moments so much. It has been said that the venere of civilization is thin and that inhumanity is near the surface in the behavior of mankind. Obviously, inhumanity appears on the surface with great frequency in our day. In the long, long way to the present man has developed a system of guideposts which have served to keep him on the path that leads to civilization. These guideposts are known as human values and they consist of such things as love, charity, faith, hope, courage, kindness, mercy, sympathy and brotherhood. The position of mankind today requires, indeed demands, a great resurgence in the application of humanism if civilization is to move forward. Most of our problems are created by people and most stem from a failure to apply the human values which have served man from the dawn of history. 74 75 Mrs. Nugent Mrs. Sheridan Secretary of the Board Mr. C. Congratulations to the Class of 1971... An indicator that you have reached the threshold of adulthood is graduation from high school. In this era of world confusion, uncertainty, rapid technological advances, and sociological change, we look each year to young people such as you for continued intelligent and responsible leadership. Hopefully, the training and education that you have received will contribute to your role of responsible leadership and citizenship in our community, in our state and in our great nation. It is our wish that we have created new horizons for you to consider. We sincerely hope that we have stimulated your appetite for learning and by so doing have challenged you to higher levels of achievement. We hope that you have been motivated beyond your expectations so that the attainment of your personal goals in life will be a most pleasant experience. The Class of 1971 should be commended for its achievement, loyalty, enthusiasm, and citizenship. Your sincerity and understanding was an indication of maturity. Best wishes for your success and happiness are extended to you from the professional staff and the administration. Although it's true, what can we do When remembrances meet the eye Things have a way of popping up To shake free time's decay A crushed and faded flower can Bring back a yesterday Old photographs can also dust The cobwebs from the past Recalling golden memories That fades all too fast Persons, things and places All serve as souvenirs That work upon our secret thoughts To summon by-gone years It seems the older people get The more they wander back Reaching for the things they want But now so sadly lack And though it is not wise to dwell On things completely done Remembrances weave miracles Each time their sto- ry's spun.
