It is expected that you will not act involuntarily, automatically or accidentally; but only after you have intelligently and rationally concluded what is best or most to be desired. Best wishes to you! 16 IN APPRECIATION The students and staff of the Downingtown Area School District wish to give special recognition to Mr. Raymond Baugher, who retires after forty-five years of service in the field of education. Downingtown has been fortunate to have Mr. Baugher for twelve of these years. Mr. Baugher's dedication to the field of education and his constant concern for young Americans has been and will continue to be appreciated by all those he has influenced. We thank you, Mr. Baugher, for your tireless efforts in our behalf. 17 The School Board Mr. Raymond R. Baugher, Superintendent Mrs. Mary Sheridan, Secretary to the Board Mr. C. Robert Mason, President Mr. Thomas E. Brookover Mr. Harley G. Fink Mr. S. Warren Supplee Mr. Robert R. Hadfield Mr. Raymond C. Williams Dr. Walter C. Fetherolf Rev. Carl Koppenhaver Mr. Glen E. Wagner, Vice President, absent from picture 18 Mrs. Sheridan Assistant Superintendents Mr. Hessinger Mrs. Nugent Mr. Garrison Mr. Remetz Mr. Novak Congratulations, Seniors! The completion of twelve years of education is indeed an achievement and a milestone in your life. Therefore, it is important that you consider it as being a period of critical thinking and decision. As you progressed through what appeared to be a long and arduous voyage, you were exposed to numerous opportunities, and you were provided with countless tools that you utilized to develop skills, knowledge, attitudes, and convictions. Living is not only learning but applying. Although your high school education is in the past, your achievements should be used as a launching pad for the attainment of higher goals, to further your education in the areas of your chosen field, and to accept the challenges and the responsibilities of our American way of life. We are living in an age where technological advances have brought about and will continue to bring about massive changes in our society. It is with great expectations that we look to young Americans. Because you are invested with the responsibility of tomorrow, we believe you will apply with vigor, pride and enthusiasm the many lessons you have learned. On behalf of the professional staff and the administration, may I extend our highest and sincerest hopes for your success and happiness. Best Wishes, Raymond DiSerafino Principal 20 Assistant Principals Mr. Hemberger 21 Secretaries Mrs. Skiles Mrs. Jenkins Mrs. Chalfont Mrs. Geist Mrs. Norris Miss Brookover Mrs. Long Mrs. Shafran Mrs. Mento Mrs. Trego Miss Zaferes Mrs. Mullin Mrs. Gainor Mrs. Sheridan 22 Guidance Science The science department offers courses on every grade level. Each course is designed to teach the scientific principles which will be needed in college or which will be applicable to non-college pursuits. The goals of the science program are to encourage a logical approach to problem-solving and to channel capable students into scientific fields. With these general goals in mind, the members of the science department regularly review the courses offered and recommend changes in existing courses or, where appropriate, add new courses. Two new courses, Chemistry II and Biology II, were introduced this year. Through a program of constant review and revision, we hope to relate to the needs of every student. Mr. Hippie Mr. Schmidt Mr. Robinson Mr. Conn Mr. Heim Mrs. Reti Miss Hille Miss Hanley Miss McGee Mr. Leffler Mr. Noble Mr. Kling Mrs. Degler Mrs. Susman Math Miss Crosby Mr. Sarry 27 The mathematics program presents suitable learning experiences for all students throughout the entire school. It is concerned with the common needs as well as the special needs of individuals. The program is designed to contribute toward the broad purpose of secondary education. General objectives of the mathematics program include the establishment of desirable work habits and skills and the development of behaviors which will better fit pupils for useful service to their community. Specific objectives include development of the ability to analyze and solve problems, recognition of relationships within the field of mathematics as well as relationships to other fields of learning, the building of foundations which will permit the study of higher levels of mathematics, and the gaining of appreciation for the historical development of mathematics. English The English curriculum develops basic skills in reading, writing, and speaking. Composition incorporated with the reading of literature promotes a deeper understanding and appreciation of great works. Field trips also enhance students' understanding of literature read in class. Oral skills are developed with work in panel discussions, debates, extemporaneous and prepared speeches, and dramatic presentations. Electives courses with emphasis on creativity are offered to seniors. Work on the school newspaper, contributions to the creative writing magazine, and participation in the junior and senior plays give students an opportunity to display special talents. Mrs. French Mrs. Travis Mrs. Backlund Miss Schmoll Foreign Languages The foreign language curriculum gives students an opportunity to study and appreciate foreign culture as well as some knowledge of a language. Regular classroom instruction is supplemented by modern language laboratory facilities. This year the curriculum includes four years of French and Spanish, three years of German, and two of Latin. Mrs. Donaghy Mrs. Elston Miss Frizzell Mrs. Paddison Social Studies As a nation we have inherited wisdom from the past and we have also inherited its problems. In order to solve these personal and national problems our young American citizens need to know something of their origins and the circumstances which have brought the problems of the past into the living present. It is with this obligation to youth as our guide that the social studies department has prepared its course of study. Supplementing a two-year research study program are excellent equipment and facilities available to the department. Mr. Caparro Mr. Hurley Mr. Appleby Mrs. Miller Mr. Campbell The music department aims to cultivate fundamental skills and develop appreciation in the field of music. Classroom instruction includes work in instrumentation, voice, and music theory. Students participating in band and choir perform during football games, pep rallies, and various school programs throughout the year. In addition, these musicians have an opportunity to compete in regional and state band and chorus. This year the department is working on the musical production, Guys and Dolls. Art The art department continues to grow in services to the students. Knowledge of art in their lives is produced in theory in the classroom. Actual practice in the arts happens under the best conditions our school district can produce. This year emphasis is on quality. Expansion of courses in art is being planned to provide training in those areas of art where student interest runs high. Fine arts courses and specialization courses such as ceramics, design, weaving, color, painting, and drawing help to produce the experiences and training required by institutions of advanced learning. 'β€’kd Mr. King Mr. Reber Mr. Angle Miss Dellet Business Education 37 Business education has dual responsibilities. First, it is concerned with general education because it recognizes that technical training by itself is not enough. Second, it is concerned with training young people for positions in business for which training is necessary. There are three areas of concentration in business education: (1) stenographic, (2) bookkeeping, and (3) clerical. The business education department has available to the students up-to-date office machines in the office practice room, as well as modern typewriters, both electric and manual, in the typewriting rooms. This year. Diamond Jubilee shorthand is being introduced in Shorthand I classes. During the last eight weeks of the school year, many business students will participate in the work-experience program. In this program, they will attend classes in the morning and work in the offices of local businesses during the afternoon. Industrial Arts Industrial arts at Downingtown is a general education program available to all students. Industrial arts courses are designed to provide the boys and girls enrolled with opportunities to learn about the industrial society in which they live. Provisions are also made for students to develop individual interests and abilities in the areas of wood, metal, drawing, graphic arts, photography, electronics and power mechanics. Students are actively involved in learning through projects, experiments, mass production activities and troubleshooting techniques. The school year 1969-70 has seen the further establishment of our photography program and the opening of clubs in the areas of Ham radio, photography and model rocketry. Future plans now being completed include the reorganization of the curriculum and the establishment of several new courses. Mr. Matter Mr. Peoples Mr. Kibler Mr. Koch Mr. Klinger Miss Piombino Mrs. Rothermel Home Economics The modern family is definitely shifting from a producing unit to a consuming unit. More working mothers and more leisure time demand that the modern home economics program provides up-to-date content in revised courses. If the future homemakers, as well as those who will follow careers in home economics, are to be properly prepared, then a thorough examination of the program was necessary. The revised curriculum encompasses more than β€œcooking and sewing. Lecture, discussions, and laboratory experiences provide students with an awareness of quality in foods, clothing and textiles, housing and home furnishings, personal and family relationships, child development, and consumer education. 40 Library Mrs. Grebey Mrs. Keen Mrs. Hoch Mr. Houp 1 linβ€” Mrs. Hufnell Physical Education The aim of the physical education department is to promote the student's personal welfare for social efficiency and emotional development and to provide organization and leadership in physical activities that are physically wholesome. The department promotes normal physical growth, vigor, and endurance and teaches wise use of leisure time by exposing youth to various activities in physical education. The program, therefore, contributes to youth's total development so that he may be better able to meet the demands of the society in which he lives and contribute to that society. In addition to the aims of physical education, the main objectives in the health curriculum are to present enough anatomy and physiology for an understanding of body structure, to teach skills and procedures in first aid and civil defense, and to promote desirable attitudes toward family living and marriage. Your talent and dedication have fostered individual growth, encouraged latent ability, and promoted cultural developments. We appreciate your contribution to our school. Thank You, Mr. Ifert Mr. Knickerbocker Class Advisor 108 Angela Caimi I live in a resort city, Vina del Mar in Chile, which is much bigger than Downingtown. Downingtown was my first experience with living in the country. 1 found in Downingtown the friendliest people. I made a lot of friends who make it sad to leave. At all times in this wonderful year I felt that everybody was trying to make this the most enjoyable experience for me. I must say that they achieved their purpose. I know I will never find the exact words to thank you all. Thank you very much.
