Presented by The Class of 1966 Downingtown Joint Senior High School Downingtown, Pennsylvania Foreword What is a high school year? It is people—students and teachers. It is loaded buses, ringing bells, crowded halls. It is classes, marks, report cards. It is projects, clubs, music, sports. It is satisfaction and regret; it is laughter and tears. Most of all it is spirit—school spirit. To portray the spirit of Downingtown High School, the staff of the 1966 yearbook has selected the school mascot, Willie the Whippet, as the theme of OUR YEAR. Table of Contents Classes Administration Seniors Underclassmen Activities Sports HAPPY ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL! WAITING TO USE THE PHONE? ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T HEAR ANYTHING? ROGER. KEEP YOUR EYES ON YOUR WORK. MR. EVANS? ONE MOMENT, PLEASE. EVERY STUDENT ENJOYS LUNCH. IN ASSEMBLY THE SPEAKERS WAIT UNTIL THE AUDIENCE IS QUIET. Guidance YOU'LL BE WORKING ON THE RAILROAD, Alison, if you don't apply to college early. Guidance service is available to all students by individual and group counseling. Special help is also provided at each grade level. In tenth grade a reading test and an educational development test are given. All eleventh grade students take a scholastic aptitude test and college bound students are urged to take college boards and the Merit Scholarship test. In twelfth grade the academic students are helped to select colleges and to apply to them; the commercial students are aided in job placement; the boys are informed of the opportunities in the armed forces; those uncertain about vocations are given a test by the State Employment Service. Library Presently, a temporary library is in use. The old library is non-existent, giving way to the new Physics Department. Upon completion, the new library will hold 21,000 books compared to the present 7,000. A conference room will be greatly enlarged with, possibly, magazines on microfilm. Despite the inconvenience, this year the library is one of the most important departments in the school for it serves as both a culture and an information center. 12 THIS IS THE LIBRARY THAT WAS. Science Our science program is designed to teach the students scientific principles which will best prepare them for college and will also apply to every way of life. Although Chemistry and Physics are electives, Biology is required of all students. Revisions are made periodically which utilize recent discoveries and newer- teaching concepts. The goals of the program are to provide knowledge for everyone, to teach students to think, and to encourage the capable student to enter scientific fields as vocations. GET READY TO RUN! Jim Aaron advises his laughing co-workers Pete Smith. Linda Cox, and Cheryl Fisher. Physical Education ANY LAST WORDS, MISS HELLER? The physical education program is planned to meet the developmental needs of every student. The activities are broad in scope with emphasis placed on the acquisition of worthwhile habits, attitudes, knowledge, and skills. This year the department is concentrating on sports that can be enjoyed after graduation from high school: archery, golf, tennis, volleyball and softball. Health AMI ItH 11 tolls) vn MH M • HUNTS THE ULNA IS CONNECTED TO THE HUMERUS, Dan Phipps points out to 16 Richard Biondi and Ted Rissel. Great strides are being made today in health. Because students must be kept informed of recent knowledge in this field, health is required for all juniors for three periods each week. The classes stress the improvement of the health of the individual, the health problems of the community, the various health organizations and the responsibility of each individual for the better health of the nation. Art In addition to its regular criteria, the Art Department offers courses in art crafts and in fine arts. The art crafts curriculum includes ceramics, wood carving, graphics and a variety of other crafts. The fine arts curriculum includes water coloring, portrait painting, figure drawing and art appreciation. Music FUTURE PICASSOS! Bill Inslee seems lo enjoy Dave Mahoney's work. The Music Department, which consists of both instrumental and choral groups, offers training for those students with musical talents which they wish to develop and also provides an Appreciation of Music course. Both vocal and instrumental areas are elective and give credit toward graduation. The marching band, with majorettes and color guard, performs for football games and in parades. The concert band gives Christmas and spring concerts. The Whippetonians play for special school functions and dances. The choral groups are Mixed Choir, and the Girls' Chorus. Although these groups assist at school and community affairs, their major presentations are a Christmas cantata and a spring concert. Mathematics Because a knowledge of mathematics has practical value for everyone, phases of this subject are available to every student in Downingtown High School. Through classes in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and the new math, the Mathematics Department meets the needs of every student. THIS MUST BE THE CORRECT ANSWER, Larry and John tell Richard Business Education Our well-equipped Business Department trains students for positions in the various fields of the business world. Modern equipment helps them to become efficient in the specialized jobs which will be available to them. The Commercial Curriculum includes bookkeeping, shorthand, typing, clerical or office practice, economics and law, retail selling, business mathematics, and advanced business. 2+2 = 4! NANCY BUSBY, BARBARA AMMON, KRISTINE MENTO find the answer easily with adding machines. 18 KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BOOK, NOT ON THE KEYS. Home Economics JUST THE WAY MOTHER WOULD DO IT. Sharon, Dolores, Elise, and Vera prepare a meal for important guests. Home Economics develops the homemaking skills and the knowledge necessary for family living. The areas covered in the program are cooking, sewing, child care, health, and housing. The goal of this department is to strengthen relations within the family group, the community, and ultimately the world. Agriculture The Vocational Agriculture Curriculum consists of instruction in the classroom, work in the shop, and supervision of farming projects. This department is designed to help interested boys to gain proficiency in modern scientific methods of agriculture, to develop skill in the repair of farm equipment, and to acquire the knowledge necessary for vocations in the agriculture field. THIS IS THE WAY TO START IT. Mr. Klinger advises Robert Floor as the Class observes. Industrial Arts The basic areas of Industrial Arts at Down-ingtown are woodworking, metalworking, the graphic arts, drafting, electronics and power mechanics. The activities in each area are designed to fulfill the needs of the individual student with emphasis on the development of useful skills to better prepare him for our industrial society and for avocational interests. Projects completed during the year are exhibited in the various Delaware Valley Fairs. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL ARE NECESSARY QUALITIES IN THE SHOP, as Pat Bucci, Don Miller and John Warmijak well know. think THERE IS THE SOURCE OF THE POWER, Mr. Skelly points out to the boys in electronics class. GIOVANNA MAZZONI The American Field Service has given me a wonderful opportunity to spend a year in the United States, to live an exciting, enjoyable, formative experience in an American school. I come from the capital of an Italian province ( a county in the United States), Ferrara, a town rich in history and art, in which were born illustrious men of culture, populated by cheerful, working people, whose principal source of livelihood is agriculture and industry. In fact, the surrQunding flat, fertile area produces fruits for exportation and sugar and flour for internal consumption. In Italy I studied at the Liceo-Classico'.’. Coming here, I had to change my system of study. I was accustomed to be in school from 8:30 A.M. until 12:30 or 1:30 P.M. with no homeroom, study halls, or club activities. After the first three hours of lessons, I had a ten minute interval, during which I could talk in the hall with my friends, eating a sandwich. I remained in my class all morning, and the teachers professors” came to the room to teach their subjects. The programs were nationally unified and all compulsory in each order of school. Testing in my Italian school was by written essays in Italian, Latin or Greek, two or three hours long, or by talking with the teacher who asked questions about the lessons I was supposed to have studied at home the previous afternoon. I am happy to have had the opportunity to be a member of two different school systems—a fact which, I believe, will make me a more understanding adult. 64 D.A.R. Presented by the Senior class and performed by some of the most famous stars in the school’s history, it was received by an enthusiastic audience. The leading roles of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Higgins were aptly portrayed by Christine Harrison and Fred Martin with a great supporting cast. A comical story of a flower girl’s rise from the London slums to its highest society, the play proved to be a great success under the skilled direction of Mrs. John Hadfield with the assistance of the Senior Class. Gary Yetter Jenny Kissed Me is a delightful comedy written by Jean Kerr, the well-known author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies. Attempting to make a teenager attractive to boys, an elderly priest reads beauty and fashion magazines and, oddly enough, succeeds to the point that Jenny, the teenager, attracts and becomes interested in a much older man. The lighthearted comedy of Father Moynihan and Jenny carry the plot to a simple and satisfying conclusion. The leading roles were well done by Dave Corry and Sue Lipscombe. Directed by Miss Patricia Troller and acted by members of the Junior Class, the play proved to be a marvelous success. Roberts 0 14 Boyertown 33 16 Coatesville 0 Congratulations to this outstanding football squad! This squad indeed was a most pleasant surprise during the 1965-1966 school year. Although the championsliip was lost by a close margin, you indeed made the season interesting for the entire school, the community, and the league. It was indeed apparent to everyone that this squad was highly spirited, well drilled in fundamentals, and constantly displayed the determination and the confidence required in order to be successful. The enthusiasm that was generated within the school was a pleasant and wholesome experience. This season was so exciting because of your explosive offense and scoring ability, and outstanding defense rated the best in the league.” Yes, boys, although you have had a most successful season, you have gained most admiration for your fine, wholesome attitude, your sportsmanlike conduct and your fighting spirit. League honors were bestowed upon several members of the squad in recognition of their outstanding ability: Kline, Collier, Gara, Phipps and Gindin were noted by the League's coaches and newspaper writers as outstanding players in the Ches-Mont League. William Kline received additional honors as an honorable mention player on the All-Scholastic Team. With a word of praise and a feeling of regret we laud you for a job superbly done and say farewell to the senior boys who helped to make the 1965 year such an exciting one.
