agriculture In Agriculture shop the boys are rigging up” a motor for future use. This department is designed to help interested boys achieve proficiency in modern, scientific methods of agriculture. During the school year they work in the classroom and in the shop, while they gain experience by carrying on special projects in the summer months. Agriculture is the only vocational department in the school. RO UE ECONOMICS Have a hot dog! The Home Economics students enjoy their own cooking. Home Economics prepares girls for a greater contribution to home and family living. In addition to improving their cooking and sewing skills, the girls acquire a knowledge of family and community relationships, child care, health, and housing. Woven into the entire program are the qualities of wise management and gracious living.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE The Foreign Language Department at Down-ingtown includes French, Latin, and Spanish. The course of study is so organized that students not only learn to read and to speak the language but also gain an understanding of the people and the culture of the country whose language they are learning. The language laboratory, which is valuable in learning pronunciation and inflection, has become a significant part of the modern language classes. Mettez les ecouteurs, s'il vous plait. Vite! MATHEMATICS The objectives of the Mathematics Department are to develop understanding of mathematical principles and their application to the material world, to develop meaningful concepts for problem solving, and to identify and prepare future mathematicians. Through its many areas—algebra, arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry—it has practical value for every student. 12 In geometry class Tom Deets enlists the aid of Judy Fell as he draws a circle.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Strike two! Try again, Danny! In the physical education classes an attempt is made to meet the immediate needs of the different students and to help them to prepare for the future in the area of recreation. Through team games such as soccer, volleyball, football, speedball, basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, and other games of lower organization an attempt is made to improve skills and to learn rules. Individual sports such as golf, archery, tennis, and badminton are included. Physical Fitness tests are administered. Indian clubs, free exercise, apparatus, and tumbling are also important phases of the program. HEALTH Health is offered to all juniors for three periods each week. The classes are constructed to assist the student in developing a knowledge and appreciation of the structure and care of the body. In addition there are units on the various health organizations and their contributions. Community problems are discussed. Personality, mental health, and many other subjects are introduced. Visual aids, discussions, reports and demonstrations are some of the techniques used in the classroom. It's her fault! Students in Miss Heller's health class illustrate a facet of mental health.
