DOWNINSTOWN JOINfTSENIOR, WISH SCHOOL DOWNfMSTOWM, PENNSVLWJtA FOREWORD neifar ■■■■ mmmmt i Our high school years are a time for growth, transition and preparation for future life. Through scholastic, athletic and social activities Downingtown High School is dedicated to preparing its students to become active, informed citizens. We present to you a pictorial history of our progress in OUR YEAR. 2 DOU MN STC)WN JOINT SENIOR- HIGH SCHOOL COST OF ARMS Arms (Shield): The Dexter Chief (top right as the shield is carried) is the open book and torch representing enlightenment through education. The sinister chief (top left) is the Coat of Arms of William Penn for whom Pennsylvania was named. The shield is divided by a chevron which symbolizes the spirit of dedication, charged with eight coach wheels, recalling the historical importance of Downingtown as the over night stopover between Lancaster and Philadelphia for colonial travelers. The number of coach wheels represents the eight districts which joined in making the existence of the new school possible. The bottom section is the historical log cabin which is reportedly the first home to be constructed in the area. Motto Ribbon: This ribbon boldly proclaims the name Downingtown High School. 4 table op contents gasses ad uinistr4jion SENIORS UNDERGASS WEN AOMTIES SPORTS A CAY IN SCHOOL Do you want a late excuse again? The Downingtown High School library has materials for all needs—a file of approximately 7,000 books and 120 current magazines, a pamphlet file, and a 5 year back file of all magazines indexed in the Abridged Readers’ Guide. The library also distributes the Visual Aids equipment for the entire school and houses the aids owned by the district. Additional facilities include an 8 post listening center and a reading accelerator. GUIQANCE Guidance service is available to all students of the school. Each year pupils are counseled individually and in groups. Special help is also provided at each grade level. In 10th grade a reading test and an educational development test are administered and used in the guidance process. In 11th grade a scholastic aptitude test is given and pupils planning to attend college are urged to take college boards and the Merit Scholarship test. In 12th grade the academic students are helped in selecting colleges and in applying to them; the commercial students are aided in job placement; the boys are informed of the opportunities in the armed forces; those uncertain about vocations are given a test by the State Employment Service. 9 FOREIGN LANGUAGE The Foreign Language Department at Down-ingtown includes French, Latin, and Spanish. The course of study is so organized that students not only learn to read and to speak the language but also gain an understanding of the people and the culture of the country whose language they are learning. The language laboratory, which is valuable in learning pronunciation and inflection, has become a significant part of the modern language classes. Mettez les ecouteurs, s'il vous plait. Vite! MATHEMATICS The objectives of the Mathematics Department are to develop understanding of mathematical principles and their application to the material world, to develop meaningful concepts for problem solving, and to identify and prepare future mathematicians. Through its many areas—algebra, arithmetic, geometry, trigonometry—it has practical value for every student. 12 In geometry class Tom Deets enlists the aid of Judy Fell as he draws a circle. agriculture In Agriculture shop the boys are rigging up” a motor for future use. This department is designed to help interested boys achieve proficiency in modern, scientific methods of agriculture. During the school year they work in the classroom and in the shop, while they gain experience by carrying on special projects in the summer months. Agriculture is the only vocational department in the school. RO UE ECONOMICS Have a hot dog! The Home Economics students enjoy their own cooking. Home Economics prepares girls for a greater contribution to home and family living. In addition to improving their cooking and sewing skills, the girls acquire a knowledge of family and community relationships, child care, health, and housing. Woven into the entire program are the qualities of wise management and gracious living. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Strike two! Try again, Danny! In the physical education classes an attempt is made to meet the immediate needs of the different students and to help them to prepare for the future in the area of recreation. Through team games such as soccer, volleyball, football, speedball, basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse, and other games of lower organization an attempt is made to improve skills and to learn rules. Individual sports such as golf, archery, tennis, and badminton are included. Physical Fitness tests are administered. Indian clubs, free exercise, apparatus, and tumbling are also important phases of the program. HEALTH Health is offered to all juniors for three periods each week. The classes are constructed to assist the student in developing a knowledge and appreciation of the structure and care of the body. In addition there are units on the various health organizations and their contributions. Community problems are discussed. Personality, mental health, and many other subjects are introduced. Visual aids, discussions, reports and demonstrations are some of the techniques used in the classroom. It's her fault! Students in Miss Heller's health class illustrate a facet of mental health. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Arts is the study of the many facets of industrial society. Although it is not a vocational subject, it emphasizes the vocational use of the skills acquired by the individual student. The basic areas of Industrial Arts are drafting, metalworking, woodworking and graphic arts. The projects completed in the shops are exhibited in the local, county, and Delaware Valley fairs. Does grime pay? Russ Mattison is working on the metal lathe. WUSIC Downingtown Joint Senior High School’s Music Department consists of both instrumental and choral groups. The marching band, with the majorettes and color guard, performed for football games and in parades,. The concert band gave Christmas and spring concerts. Members of the band participated in the Lower Southeastern District Music Festival, the All-State Region III Music Festival and on June 6, 1964, the Blue and Gold Concert Band gave a concert at the 1964-65 World’s Fair. The Whippetonians, a popular group, appeared at special school functions and dances. The choral groups are the Mixed Choir, the Boys’ Glee Club and the Girls’ Chorus. Throughout the year these groups assisted at school and community affairs. Their major presentations were a Christmas Cantata and a Spring Concert. Members selected by competition took part in the District Chorus and the All-State Region III Chorus. ENGLISH Because it enables students to express their ideas and to listen with understanding to the ideas of others, English is an important part of our school curriculum. Throughout the year its study includes vocabulary, spelling, grammar, composition and literature. English students benefit by hearing their mistakes. 16 COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT This department offers courses preparing not only for positions in the business world but also for personal use. Although it is designed primarily to develop efficiency and competence in business skills, it aids in the growth of intelligent participation in personal, family, and community activities. The Business Education curriculum includes typing, shorthand, transcription, bookkeeping, economics and law, advanced business, office practice, clerical practice, retail selling and business mathematics. Speedy arithmetic! Brenda Foster, Barbara Black, Paula Scharek are using adding machines. ART One of the most popular electives in our school, Art, offers something of value for everyone. This department has two distinct areas: General Art and Crafts, and Fine Art. General Art and Crafts enables interested students to perfect technical skills and to experiment in creative expression, while Fine Art gives a broad, complete, art background for the person interested in art as a career and for those who plan to attend schools of higher education. DRIVER, TRAINING Each year students learn the skills necessary to meet today’s driving situations through guidance, knowledge and application. Once a week the class as a group meets to learn the principles of safe driving, but each day individual students apply their knowledge by practice in the training car. 18 Engine trouble or should Dennis Dancy learn how to drive? QOOAL STUDIES It is the purpose of Social Studies to make the student aware of the history, the problems, and the future of the countries of the world. In the sophomore year he is informed of the cultural and historical background of countries outside the boundaries of the United States. In the junior year he studies tlie United States including its discovery and growth, the birth of freedom with the subsequent struggles to retain that freedom, and the attempt to keep the world free from tyranny. During the senior year he considers the problems he will face in the future. By debate, discussion, study and films, every student is encouraged to think for himself about world problems and their solutions. Regina is pointing out Downingtown to Joann, Jack, and Keith. Are Amoebas that funny? SCIENCE The principal objective of our science courses is to encourage original and creative thinking by the students through individual study, classroom discussions and laboratory work. The Science Department keeps its program up to date with modern science, thereby allowing the students to follow the latest scientific developments in industry and research. The whoosiemijigger is connected to the thingamabod,” say confused physicists, Hiltebietel, Irwin, Connor, and Mattison. 19 21 DOU MNSTOU N JOINT WfCH SCHOOL BD4RD Mr..Elmer F. RAYMOND R. BAUGHER Superintendent of Schools To the Class of 1965: I extend to each one of you my hearty congratulations for the opportunities you have developed for yourself. The special opportunities do not exist in a particular industry or profession of your choice — not even in college — they do exist uitbin yourself. The words of Longfellow express it appropriately: How beautiful is youth! how bright it gleams With its illusions, aspirations, dreams! Book of Beginnings, Story without End, Each maid a heroine, and each man a friend!” 23 You, the Class of 1965, will he graduating into a world of scientific changes, also a world filled with confusion and uncertainty. Your future will be largely what you make it. Remember to look and plan ahead, for every great success has been accomplished in spite of the cry, It can’t be done.” Good Luck! To the Class of 1965: My wish for each of you is happiness. My hope for each of you is success in all endeavors. My counsel for each of you is courage. ROBIN ’£ SUMMER IN ENGtAND WAS REWARDING My Home Last Summer The Tower Bridge in London Being an exchange student is too important an experience not to color my entire life. It is not possible for anyone to imagine the thrill of going overseas until it happens to him. I lived with a family so very different in thought and manner from me. My home in England was an 800 year-old, thatched cottage with electricity made by a generator in the barn, with no hot, running water, and with no central heating. Although the languages are similar, many words have different meanings: a sweater is a jumper, a dixie cup is a tub, a popsickle is an ice lollie, a roadside stop is a lay by, the hood of the car is the bonnet and the trunk of the car is the boot. While I was there I attended a meeting of the PWS (Post War Society). This group is composed of students who meet once a month to discuss their government, their society, and their problems. They talked about the queen as a figurehead, their need for the A-Bomb, Barry Goldwatcr, the Common Market, and decadence. It was then that England began to live for me. It became not just a place on the map but a people with joys, and sorrows of their own. The aim of AFS is to promote peace through understanding. Understanding is the key word. It does not mean knowing facts, figures and principal cities. It does mean feeling akin to the people and their problems. My summer abroad was an unequaled, thrilling experience and I feel that I do better understand the people of England as AFS intended I should. While I was living with the Pickard family, I visited various points of interest including cathedrals, monastic ruins, and Dartmoor. I watched go cart racing, horse shows and scrambling (an exciting motor cycle race over fields with jumps, ditches and streams). After two months the seventeen AFS students in Great Britain met in London for two days. We saw St. Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, and Buckingham Palace. We then joined all the AFS students in Rotterdam, Holland, to embark on the Seven Seas, the AFS boat, for the United States. Ten days later, after hurricanes and a leaking boat, we arrived in New York. My summer was an incomparable experience and worthy of Downingtown’s support. DONALD FORBES JOHN HOWARD ROBERT WHEATLEY TOM PRICE KENNETH WALLS MICHAEL MENTO COACHES Mr. DiSerafino, Mr. Campbell As members of the 1964 football squad, you were indeed a fine group of young men. The school was proud to have you as its representatives on the gridiron. We shall always recall the enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the school after those glorious victories and the air of frustration and sadness that prevailed after the defeats. However, what is important now to the individual members of the squad are the many experiences that you have gained by playing football and your ability to apply them to everyday living. This is one of the basic purposes of playing the game. Honors were extended to several members of the squad. Robert Carl was named first team All-Chest-Mont guard and given honorable mention as All Scholastic guard; Kenneth Walls, John Howard, and Robert Poole received honorable mention All Ches-Mont for their outstanding playing. The members of the 1964 squad are to be commended for their valiant effort, their courageous spirit, and their outstanding citizenship. STEPHEN MASCHERINO MANAGERS: Alan Hough.
