LUNDQUIST SCIENCE The purposes of the Science Department are as follows: to teach rational thinking which can be carried over to other courses of study; to understand the scientific factors of environment; to apply scientific principles to everyday life; to keep informed of scientific discoveries and how they affect the citizens of the world; to present the sciences as an intellectual and cultural pursuit; to present the sciences as a flexible and useful tool to be used without limit. LANGUAGE In language classes the students learn not only to speak, read and write the language of other nationalities, but also about their customs, country and culture. Studying any language helps to develop an understanding of the aspirations and ideals of the people. The Modem Language Department has a most useful learning tool in its modern R.C.A. laboratory. With this new instrument of learning, pronunciation and inflection can be taught more effectively and efficiently than before. BUSINESS EDUCATION Increased mechanization in business offices has brought about a need for office workers equipped with basic knowledge and understandings of the business world in addition to vocational competence in office skills. The Business Education curriculum has been expanded to include offerings of Typewriting and General Business in the ninth grade; Principles of Economics and Law, Principles of Selling, and Electric Typing in the three-sequence curriculum—Bookkeeping, Secretarial, General Clerical—in the senior high school. Modern facilities, an all-electric typewriting classroom, and new up-to-date office machines will aid business students to prepare adequately for initial positions in the business offices of our area. 24 a ri r s ► ' J ■i HOME ECONOMICS The major purpose of homemakiog education is to help girls, boys, and adults contribute to better home and family living. The new Home Economics Department consists of a suite of three rooms—a family living center with a demonstration kitchen and two all-purpose rooms. The all-purpose rooms are designed to accommodate the six areas of the Home Economics Course: personal and community relationships, child care, housing, health, and safe living. Woven through the program are the qualities of good management and gracious living. MATHEMATICS As an art, mathematics is full of beauty and truth; as a science, it is practical and demonstrable. Through the study and application of its rich history, the philosophy of man is profoundly enriched. The objective of the Mathematics Department is to provoke the curiosity and imagination of students to form their own conclusions. SOCIAL SCIENCE This department consists of those courses which study the relationship of man to his environment and of man to his fellow men. Its four principal divisions are Geography, World Culture, American History, and Problems of Democracy. In geography classes the students learn the physical and economic background of all sections of the world which have in the past, and will in the future, affect their lives. In culture and history the students gain an understanding of their heritage. P.O.D. is designed to help the students understand the basic principles of democracy and the United States form of government. PHYSICAL EDUCATION The aim of this department is to provide activities which aid the progress of the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social aspects of each student’s life. It furnishes activities to promote physical efficiency. It affords opportunities to develop leadership. loyalty, self-sacrifice, alertness—all qualities needed for social development. It teaches skills in recreation which will lead to a worthwhile use of leisure time. It helps produce health habits valuable both for today and for tomorrow'. ART In the Downingtown Senior High School program, art education is based on the relationship of the needs of youth as well as on the encouragement of the talented students to advance their knowledge of the widely diversified art fields. As the art program changes from a required subject to a more condensed program for those who show definite ability and skill, the art curriculum must also change to meet the needs of this special group. Therefore, the art curriculum is dedicated to the progressive advancement of the students’ skills and knowledge of art. It also encourages students to continue their training beyond high school and to become the artists of their generation. AGRICULTURE This department, the only vocational one in the high school, is designed to teach students of agriculture proficiency in farming. With the rapid change from agriculture in our area, the agriculture program is oriented to rural living which includes mechanics, and on-the-farm training. The student program is of a twelve month duration since the training on the farm takes place during the summer months. This is the only program in the high school which directly receives federal aid. 26 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The primary aim of the English Department is to teach the students .to read, to write, and to speak English. It further attempts to train the students to read with accuracy, comprehension, and perception; to write clearly and effectively; to express verbally what is sensed; to analyze facts and to examine ideas critically; and to develop the precision and discernment needed to cope with all knowledge. DRIVER EDUCATION The Driver Education program has been organized to give the students the opportunity to learn self-guidance and selfprotection and to develop social consciousness and concern for the rights and safety of others. This type of learning is not an end in itself hut a means to that greater end—a good life. INDUSTRIAL ARTS DEPARTMENT This department consists of the following areas: Metalwork, Drafting, Graphic Arts, Woodwork, and Electronics. At the present time it has the most modem equipment and is set up to meet the requirements of all students, from those who are going directly into industry to those who are going either to technical school or to college. MUSIC DEPARTMENT Although all students will not be the most accomplished musicians in the world, they can gain much enjoyment in the field of music. The Music Department provides training for students in band, orchestra, and choral groups. This department also offers training for those who have musical talents which they wish to improve and at the same time teaches an appreciation of music. 27 X)ecficalion In our lives today it is essential that we have a person who will lead and teach us with patience and wisdom. This is just what you have done for us. Without your guidance in the Commercial Department. many students would have been deprived of the understanding which is the outcome of your classes. Because of your sincere interest in us and your enthusiasm for teaching, you have been a valuable friend and an excellent example for us to follow. For the services you have given us, we, the Class of 1961, dedicate “Our Year” to you, Mr. Joseph Creamer. Pete . . . that diamond . . . cheerful . . . lunch hour . . . After a year of planning, the Downingtown Committee of the American Field Service was happy to welcome Yvette Zurbuchen from Winterthur, Switzerland, as its first exchange student. Mr. and Mrs. Newton J. Thompson and their daughter, Barbara, became Yvette’s American family on August 21, 1960. Yvette was a member of the Senior Class and took part in school activities. By Christmas she had learned so much English that she found it difficult to speak in German and French when she talked to her family on the phone. Yvette’s sincerity, quiet charm and enthusiastic attitude have made many American friends for her. We can only hope that wre have made a similar impression on her so that the picture of American life which she takes back to Switzerland will be a factor in fostering international peace. Yvette has found the schedule of our school much different from that of hers. Her classes at home are forty minutes long with a ten minute break between each class. There are no extracurricular activities in the school program but there are community recreational programs. In Switzerland each student stands when the teacher comes into the room and sits only when told to do so. There are few opportunities for a student to know a teacher outside the classroom and the classroom itself is very formal. Yvette had studied English in school but she found that it was “English” English and different from “American English. Skiing, skating and swimming are the most popular sports; and soccer, rather than football, is the national spectator sport. Family activities play a large part in the lives of students in Switzerland—they walk and ride bicycles together very often on family outings. When Yvette returns home this summer, she will be old enough to drive a car and attend movies because young people cannot do these things until they are 18. “Bon voyage, Yvette,” from each one of us at Downingtown Joint Senior High School. 47 H. WILLIAM ADAMS Bill came from Frankford High School in Philadelphia where he took part in the following activities: swimming, track, basketball, chorus, orchestra, dance band and glee club. PATSY GIBSON Pat came from Tazewell High School in Tazewell. Virginia, where she was a member of the 4-H Club and the choir. MONIKA GERDA ILSE NIEMZ Nicki was graduated from high school in Berlin where she was a member of the dancing club, sports club and school club. She was graduated from college (Berufsfachschule fuer technische Zeichnerinnen der Stadt Berlin) in Berlin. She worked as a technical designer for Standard Electric and Mix Genest Werk Berlin which is related to General Electric in New York. Nicki came to the United States in July, 1960; after spending four weeks at the Du Pont High School in Wilmington, she came to Downingtown. 48 MARGARET ANN THOMPSON Peggy came from West Chester Joint Senior High School in December. ELAINE HOOVEN Elaine came from the Lansdowne-Alden High School and Conestoga High School where she was a member of the following organizations: Future Nurses of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Girls’ Chorus and Teachers’ Secretaries. “SABRINA FAIR'’ CAST Maude Larrabee—Barbara Noll Julia Ward McKinlock Janice Windle Linus Larrabee, Jr.—Lee Thompson l.inus Larrabee, Sr. George Shoemaker Margaret—Fay Thomas David Larrabee—John Rogers Gretchen—Judy Jones Sabrina Fairchild—Georgia Wagner Fairchild John Houston A Young Woman—Barbara Young A Young Man—Bob Logan Another Young Woman—Joyce McCombs Another Young Man—David Schaeffer Haul D'Argenson—Donald Hopson Director—James K. Sabrina is the daughter of the chauffeur for the Larrabee family who are staggeringly rich and impeccably genteel. Brilliant and educated, she comes home from five years in Paris to learn if she is still in love with the elder Larrabee son. Linus: but once home, finds it is the younger son. David, who pursues her. Finally, in a most amusing scene in which the Larrabee chauffeur reveals that he. too. is a millionaire in his own right. Sabrina wins the man she loves. We extend heartiest congratulations to you—our football squad. Certainly every game that you played this season made us proud that you were “our team” and the representatives of the Downing-town Joint High School student body. It was a pleasure to watch you perform this fall because you were believed by many to be the Ches-Mont League underdog. It was evident that you were outweighed. outnumbered, and that you definitely lacked experience. However, as the season progressed, it was also clear that you were never outplayed and that you were in the competition for the championship until the last few weeks of the season. High honors were bestowed upon you as a team and distinction gained by Paul Miller and Earl Wells as well as honorable mention to the all-state team by Paul Miller. As a team you helped Downingtown to maintain the rank of ninth among all schools in District 1 of the P.I.A.A. We praise you, members of the team, because of your excellent teamwork, your great determination, your outstanding school spirit, your sportsman-like conduct during the games, and your exceptional display of citizenship in school. COACHES Mr. Forte, Mr. DiSerafino, Mr. Campbell MARVIN HALL Halfback BILL OWENS Halfback GEORGE MILLER Manager DAVE RADCLIFFE Manager PAUL MILLER PETE BOUSUM LARRY EDWARDS Halfback Tackle Fullback 79 CROSS COUNTRY FIRST ROW: James Hurtt, Lewis Wilson, Lee Hayes, Randy Reeve, Randy Dietrich, Joe Glisson, Ronald Brinton, Kenneth Henry. SECOND ROW: Robert Shank, David Moore, Hunt Berryman, Tom Yerkes, Charles Newlin, Jeff Smith, Charles Alexander, John Snyder, Alan Davis. Downingtown’s second year in Ches-Mont Cross Country far exceeded all expectations from the standpoint of student participation as well as competitive success. The D.H.S. Harriers competed in seven dual meets in which they won three, and lost four. However, Tom Yerkes finished first in every meet, which meant that D.H.S. won 7 races even if it won only three meets. Tom Yerkes captured the individual Ches-Mont Championship when he established a new course record of 13:03 at West Chester. He also finished 24th in the State Championships.
