Sen ior CL 'Ljearb ooL Staff 1955 2 owning town oint School DOWNINGTOWN. PA. The front door of Downing town Joint High School to us it symbolizes the opening day o) our senior year udiich started on September 7. 1954, when school opened with a bang! We greeted all our old friends, met the new comers, and missed those who were no longer with us. s we settled down to work we hoped that this year would be the best ever, so we set about to make that dream come true. In addition to that routine and somewhat tiresome task of study ing. we joined clubs, went out for the football squad (a good one this year), got ready for the farm show, tried out for the senior play (the best ever presented — we thought), cheered the basketball team on to victory, and danced our feet ofl at the many sir ell dances. Because of your patient understanding, your helpful encouragement. your calm steadfastness of purpose and constant interest in our welfare, we the ( lass of I()55 dedicate this hook to you. Miss Mary P. Costello. By means of this dedication we are trying to express to you our appreciation of your efforts which hare added to our grou th and achievement while in high school. We hope your life may be filled with a large portion of success and happiness. We Wish Do MISS MILDRED LAIRD for her direction and guidance as advisor to the Editorial Staff. MISS ALMA SIMMENDINGER for her advice in the financing of the yearbook hy the Business Staff. MRS. LOUISE REMETZ for her assistance in the arrangement and drawing of the division pages. Mr. Albert Miller, Photographer Mr. Emil Nonnenmocher of the General Engraving Co. Ensinger Printing Service of Adamstoivn, Pa. As we look back over the years spent in high school, we are amazed at the many improvements we can find. I he Downingtown lligh School has become the Downingtown joint Area High School, a new wing has been added to the high school building, twenty acres ol land adjacent to the high school have been purchased for future development, a full time guidance director and a librarian have been employed, the Industrial Arts Department has been expanded, an additional lunchroom has been added, and the cafeteria has been remodeled. To the DOWNINGTOWN IOINT S( IIOOL HOARD we express our sincere thanks. I he Class of 1955. School Board SI I 11 NO—Mr. Horace Rodgers (Vice President). Mr. George Nixdorf (President), Mrs. Mary Foreman (Secretary). Mr. Iceland Wilson. STANDING —Mr. Glenn Wagner. Mr. James Manley. Mr. Robert Mason. Mr. S. Warren Supplce, Dr. Seth Pope. Mr. Stephen Moore. Mr. Herman Fnucctt. Mr. Charles P. Emery. Mr. C. O. Brown. ABSENT—Mr. illiain Bender. Mr. N. Norman I’rank. Mrs. Pred Hoopes. Mrs. Regina Mill. Mr. J. Herbert Windolph. Mr. I beodore Rogers (Solicitor). At tlw beginning of the year it was suggested to the seniors — in a somewhat questioning manner — that it might be advisable to change the name of the yearbook. In the meetings of the Editorial Staff the subject was considered seriously. As a result there was placed in the IronI hall of the school a suggestion box into which any student could put his idea of a suitable name for the booh. Into the box I dropped a card with my idea, This Year . One night at play practice Attmore Pollock and I were discussing the name with Miss Laird. When Punky decided suddenly that Our Year” seemed much more suitable than I his Year , I agreed. Several days later the seniors voted on a new name for the book, and to my surprise The Cuckoo became OUR YEAR . LEW STRATTON. Senior the 2) ozen We. the Senior class, wish to thank all those who went through the fuss and fury of long re hearsals, the scurying to arquire stage properties, the last minute worries when 1010 cars had Hat tires, and the constant eflort for perfection when we presented our play called CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN”. The play relates the troubles of Mr. Gilhreth. an efficiency expert, who tries to prove that what works well in a factory will work equally well at home His greatest opposition to this idea is his teen age daughters interest in boys and parties. I lis five sons do not help matters by teasing and making fun of the girls attempts to got dates. In spite of all the distractions. Mr. Gilhreth. with his wife’s help, does organize his family into a smoothly running group and his children gain more privileges than they ever hoped to have.
