DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA Opening DOWNEY HIGH We of Downey High School hove been surrounded by quire o bit of construction these post two years: the City Hall, across the street, the new Hotel, down the block, and the road construction in front of the Senior parking lot, which made leaving school seem like a trip through a demolition derby nightmare. With all this activity surrounding the school, the school seemed a little lifeless except at lunch and passing periods. Well, they aren ' t the only ones who are doing any building. Honestly, just ask any Algebra teacher who has been try- ing to get a solid foundation of linear equations in to you before you get shipped off to try and learn the super- structure of calculus. And remember the night you spent three hours on the phone with o girl just talking and real- ized later that it gave you the confi- dence to talk to face to face. What a good foundation for the wonderful rela- tionship that followed! And when you think about it, your whole trip through school has been a continual building experience Kindergarden building to- wards First grade, High School building towards College, College building to- wards a Career. So we at Downey High would like to soy we ' re not just hangin ' around we ore BUILDING TOWARDS THE FUTURE. isS - ' to , _____ W - Alii -Si J H fe=J B= ___.. 3 maWm !£! The Seniors come to the conclusion thot the administration wasn ' t trying at all costs to ban fun from the school. They were only trying to do their jobs the best way that they know how. All the student faculty feuds don ' t seem so important when you realize that you won ' t be able to say See ya next year to your favorite teachers or friends for that matter. All the realizations of the four years of College or the full time job that is facing them keep pounding their way into their heads. They begin to stand back and see the familiar sayings of the Juniors when they are signing their yearbooks Gee, do you realize that we ' ll be Seniors next year? They watch as the underclassmen complain that summer never seems to last long enough. Well guys, your time will come soon enough. There will be a time when you ' ll be sorry to say Good Dye DHS. These students during their tenth, eleventh, and twelth years, must have com- pleted thirty semester hours and are considered the out- standing students in their appropriate fields. They must also have an overall GPA of not less than 3.0. A faculty committee selects outstanding students in specific fields. General field winners at each school receive personally engraved achievement award plaques and become eli- gible for the program ' s competition. Competition includes a discussion by the students and paper written by each. To go to the finals, each contender must win in his her zone. Final first place winners in each field earn the top award of $2000. with the second place student winning $1,000. The third place finisher receives $750. All other finalists earn $500 awards. The three general study fields honored are Li beral Arts, Science 6 Math, and Fine Arts. Outstanding students in specific fields are awarded certificates. AT GIRLS LEAGUE i 4i .eJcfit s n ' wmft LOS ANGELES COUNTY ACADEMIC DECATHLON ACADEMIC DECATHLON The Academic Decathlon was held on Saturday, November 17, 1984 at Warren High School. This year, Downey High School sent a team consisting of two seniors, four juniors, and two alternates. The Academic Decathlon is a ten event contest of academic strength which promotes wholesome interschool competition in academic areas of study and interest. The tests and demonstrations include: Economics, English and Literature, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Physical and Biological Sciences, Social Science, Essays, Speach (Prepared and Impromptu), Interview, and Super Quiz. So Young Kim Martin Wainer Aloin Guevara Jayshree Dhagot Mrs. Clork- Advisor CALIFORNIA SCHOLASTIC Dovid J. Attyah Kata L. Ballard Carol A. Camp William R. Desenberg James P. Dominguez Liz D. Fraga In order to join CSF (California Scholastic Federation), stu- dents must achieve a total of ten points on the CSF grading scale. An A on this scale is worth three points and every D is worth one point. Receiving a D in an honors course is worth an extra point which then makes it worth two points. The classes students take must rank high academically and only the hardest workers attain CSF membership. To become a CSF Sealbearer, a student must qualify for, and join CSF, four semesters of a possible six. Students must join between their sophomore year and graduation, and one semester must be in their senior year. Lafleche Giosson FEDERATION SEALBEARERS Chris P. Honetschloeger Karen M. John Drion Y. GREEN RETIRES STUDENTS SAY WE LOVE YOU GREENIE We are sorry to see Mr. Richard Green, o favorite with the students, retire his year. He has spent 34 years in the Downey Unified School District and has been teaching, and telling bad jokes, at Downey High since 1971. How could anyone forget all the witty remarks that have been uttered from our teacher with the prettiest smile?!? Of course after this year is over Hugo Nasal will continue to live. The Complete Book Of Nasal Passages will be retired to the Yearbook Hall of Fame. Many Normaneers and Les Torcheres will remember the fond nicknames of Normanures and Les Tushes . The Yearbook staff wants you to know that Mr. Green Still waits for Gumby ' s kiddnapper to randsom his favorite pal. The students and faculty will be sorry to see his happy bubbly person leave our campus, but we ' re sure he ' ll enjoy his time that will be available for golfing and general relaxing. One thing is for sure Mr. Green sure has left many an impression on all the students that he has taught, and he is all that much dearer in their hearts for the special caring person that he is. m FACULTY ANN ABERCROMBIE: Rem. A nation-wide magazine rated Dosco 14fh in the nation, but that only gave the Vikings even more desire to win than before. The Vikings tore up the nation and best the Braves 13-12. The Vikings were flying high, but soon came back to earth by a defeat from Dell Gardens. Back on the ground the Vikings took out their frustrations of the loss by beating a Big 5 conference school, Long Beach Jordan 39-16. The opening league game was against cross-town rival Warren; and as always, if was a close game. Due to the crucial help from the officiating, Warren squeeked by the Vikes 15-14 even though the Vikings physically dominated the Bears throughout the game. The next game the Vikings once again took out their frustrations and beat Santiago 42-14. The next two games were crucial to the Vikes because of league standings. The Vikings first breezed through Paramount 40-15 and then breezed through Cerritos 39-17. This put the Vikings in second place next to Lynwood. The next game was against Lynwood for the Championship, but the Knights proved to be just too powerful for the Vikings. The next two games proved to be no match for the Vikes, as they beat Dominguez on our Homecoming night 37-7 and then took their stand in the CIF playoffs but fell short and lost to Mission Viejo 29-20. Overall the Vikings had anofber successful season under head coach Brad Elrod with 2nd place in SGVL and a 7-4 over-oil record.
