Until he was seven, the only laughing water he knew came from pumps and bottles. But his great father traded the wigwam for a Ford and wandered to the purple clouds of sunset on the Pacific, on the shores of the salty Gitche Gumee, to say, Farewell, O Hiawatha And in Orange, California, the young warrior wondered through the orange groves to feast upon this edenic fruit until Orange High pronounced him a man and sent him forth to build his wigwam. Although initiation rites are painful, he endured to graduate from Fullerton Ju nior College, Occidental College and finally the penultimate of tribal rites, his Masters of Arts at U.S.C. Mr. Larson ' s hunt for wampum ended at Viking Tower where his belt remained lean and the shells small, but the opportunities to counsel were great. For five years Mr. Larson wore war-paint and performed the war dance in the class room as he fought the battle of English and History. Soon the Big War God called him to a council to assign him as a counselor for the next twenty-nine years, in which role Mr. Larson ' s quiet wisdom has seized and soothed many. Many students reflect upon the patience of Mr. Larson whose sedulousness provided a scholar- ship the student might have overlooked or whose wisdom insured a fruitful outcome. After visiting other such nations as Canada and Mexico (also those of Europe), Mr. Larson has made peace with all tribes. He now plans to build a wickiup among his avocados in Fallbrook where he and his wife Rosemary may contem- plate the long track and trail of splendor, in the spectrum of the nuances of the moonlight as their dreams reach fruition. The many admirers of Ms. Martin are not surprised at her early presci- ence (six months) in her recognition that the Big Apple (N.Y.C.) was not hers; thus, she (the family came with her) migrated to California where she has received innumerable boxes of apples in her twenty-nine years of teaching (twenty-two at South, seven at D.H.S.). Since her graduation from Compton High School, the school has continued its search for a tennis and badmitton phenomenon to equal Ms. Martin; but where Ms. Martin ruled, mere shadows remain. Ms. Martin ' s intense interest in literature propelled her to college to ensconce herself in the upper empyream, an English major, at C.S.U.L.B. With Pallas Athena her patroness the inestimable Ms. Martin drank nectar and ate ambrosia to have the gods bestow the M.A. upon her (U.C.S.B.). When Downey High sent out a call, for the best, Ms. Martin came to fulfill their prophecy. Perhaps it is her genealogy, but nevertheless, among Ms. Martin ' s many outstanding units is mythology. Her room comes alive with ancient shadows and figures that grace the fields of Elyseum and glower in Tartarus - then Zeus calls and Eurydice conducts them back to Hades. Looking across the campus, one sees Ms. Martin, trailed by her admirers. The pied piper of Downey, the enchantress, pipes a tune (and al- though she would deny this) she pipes a tune of love. And between classes it is never difficult to find Ms. Martin ' s room - look for the room that looks like the Anaheim Convention Center crowded with the past and present students - probably returning for their birthday swats. Spare the ruler and spoil the hair, the motto emblazoned on her bronzed ruler, points to the mixed function of her many manifestations of love. Ms. Martin ' s nomadic affliction began at six months and never left her. She has not only toured the U.S. extensively, she has also visited England three times. Her junkets to APIC (Amer. Pol. Items Collector) conven- tions and her innumerable visitations to various political events to gather her memorabilia have taken her thousands of miles and have won her many trophies. Ms. Martin ' s membership in four match cover clubs and five post card clubs has provided an opportunity to show her unique collection and to garner fourteen trophies. Now Ms. Martin embarks on still another journey. And as she spreads the golden fleece to reminisce with Ulysses over the storms of the past and the glow of the future, we know she will continue To strive, to seek, to find, not to yield. WE ' RE ALl TO MISi HAROLD LARSON MARTHA MARTIN GOING YOU CLIFF POWERS If you have missed knowing Mr. Powers, you have a huge chasm in your repertory of interesting people. Mr. Powers tells of his first acquaintance with Ben Franklin which occured at the age of ten when a fellow student struck him on the head with Poor Richard ' s Almanac causing him (Mr. Powers) to spill ink all over his hands. In an effort to wipe up the ink, he blotted ink marks on a piece of paper. He accidentally turned the blots into the English teacher who gave him an A for originality. He has never recovered from this success and since has continued to ink papers as a printer. And the tattered book he carries is an annotated version of Poor Richard ' s Almanac which purports much such wisdom as A penny saved is a penny thrown on campus ; or A stitch in time might mean not getting new clothes ; or Don ' t put off until tomorrow that which you won ' t turn in anyway, and many more bits of conventional wisdom. Mr. Powers was born in Long Beach, graduated from Santa Yancz High in Solvang, attended C.S.U.L.B. for two years and finished at C.S.U.L.B. With type in his pockets and ink on his fingers Mr. Powers headed for Downey High where he has taught Cal. History, U.S. History, and anthropology. It is axiomatic that he has taught graphic arts. He also wishes to disclaim the rumor that he invented the printing press. But he does add that if Gutenberg hadn ' t, Franklin would have; and if Franklin hadn ' t, he would have. To keep in touch with all that goes on in the world of printing, Mr. Powers usually takes jobs in industry in the summer, Nevertheless, he also has other interests. He belongs to the Calif. Management Association, the Crafts Associ- ation, and has plans to become a travel consultant. In conjunction with the latter, Mr. Powers plans to tour the U.S. and work as an itinerant printer. Mr. Powers ' three children and grandchildren will have to talk fast because between Mr. Powers and Norma ' s (his wife) fishing trips, golf, hunting and traveling there will be a clattering of the printing press and suddenly Mr. and Mrs. Powers are gone. Is it possible that Mr. Powers uses green ink to print that green stuff? When asked these questions, Mr. Powers smiles and opens his Almanac and reads, Black ink turns green only in the eye of the beholder. So, for Mr. Powers it ' s not thirty but rather the beginning of a new book- chapter one, coming up. CHARLES TOOHEY V When Mr. Toohey left Storm Lake, lA, to acquire a better view of the world at Buena Vista College, the city fathers counciled and renamed the city Pacific Lake. But Mr. Toohey ' s (known as Toughie Toohey) talents were recognized nationally, for he received a letter from the President requesting that he (Mr, Toohey) report to the U.S. military. Being cooperative, Mr. Toohey complied. Subsequently, Mr. Toohey stormed through the European and African theaters to be awarded three battle stars by Presidential citation. For the unintiated, battle stars were not Lee Marvin, John Wayne and Richard Widmark; these awards represented outstanding courage in the face of battle. And the theater was not the Downey Theater where kids throw garbage; the theater was war. After Mr. Toohey had fought on the international scale to make the world safe for democracy, he returned to complete the battle on the home front-teaching. Mr. Toohey continued his education at Colorado State, following a brief teach- ing and coaching career in lA; he volunteered for the western front where he signed on for extra hazardous duty as teacher and coach (for seven years) at Downey where he has remained for twenty-six years as a drafting teacher. Mr. Toohey ' s citations never ended with the service. His drafting and architec- tural design students have repeatedly won state and national recognition. And equally important, many students upon leaving Mr. Toohey ' s class have entered profitable jobs as draftsmen (draftspcople). When one walks by Mr. Toohey ' s room, he walks quietly and sees more than he hears, for there is an abrupt barking of an order, a clicking of eyes, the ticking of the clock and the sound of graphite on paper-Mr. Toohey does not permit erasers. As on the battle front, a mistake could be one ' s life. Mr. Toohey expanded his battle stars to all fronts. He has served not only as advisor to school clubs but also as President of the Hawaiian Gardens Lions ' Club, a club which has contributed a great deal of help and funds to the Society for the Blind. But even the most intrepid of warriors wearies of the present battles and yearns for respite-an R R- a kind of living Valhalla where he sings of the past and hopes for the future. The playing fields will be the golf courses, but the weapons will be equally as devastating. Fortunately, Mr. Toohey ' s arsenal of expertise will not be relegated to the scrap heap. He will return twenty days a year in an advisory capacity. We too cite Mr. Toohey for exemplary service and conclude with Mr. Toohey ' s wisdom: Old warriors never die; they just draft new fields. 129 PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE: COUNSELORS MILLARD JUROVICH HAROLD LARSON ■« ' -■ •■- ' ■■ ' ' ' ' S ' B t- — a ' J - i ij a [ (A J H wm A H ■ b f i ' ' ■■m A H 1 ■r- F i ■ H ROBERT SCHLATTER HELEN SMITH 130 FACULTY r -? i3l - f H uwrr [- wP M est 1 ABERCROMBIE.
