Ckgafynfggfffli l It was also a year of fantastic scientific achievement: , when the science fiction of space travel became a reality, I and man's journeys to other planets became just a matter of time. - w I fl It was a crazy, mixed-up year of a crazy, mixed-up world. m So we thought of Alice, and the crazy,mixed-up world she saw when she went through the Looking Glass into Wonderland. Back in l865, when a serious and scholarly mathematician 4 named Charles Lutwidge Dodgson published some tales he had P told to amuse the children of a friend, he used the nom de plume Lewis Carroll,perhaps because he didn't want scholarly colleagues to think that he was frivolous. To many the tales were for children only: to others they had serious and satiric meanings. They had a mingling of fantastic absurdity with familiar details of everyday living that has made Alice a perennial delight to adults and chil- dren alike.
