E' Leadership As my plaTform suggesTed a Nwinning Erau aT Downey, I proceeded To fulfill iT. During my Term of office, The firsT business was The re- vising of Two amendmenfs To The ConsTiTuTion, which included: I. yell king elecTions3 2. a limiTed number of valid sIgnaTures for candl- daTes' peTiTions. ln The following weeks of my Term in office several members of The STudenT Council creaTed a fighT song for our Viking aThIeTes. Emblems for The aThleTic blazers were purchased, along wiTh The aThIeTic leTTer modificafions. Nego- TiaTlons for a fooTball press box were begun, and a second weighT machine in The process. Confinulng efforTs for campus improvemenTs were sTressed greaTly during second semesTer. The changing of Third STreeT inTo a shaded mall was one of The many improvemenfs To creaTe a fresher and a warmer afmosphere aT Downey High. New desks and a clock were purchased To comple- menT The sTudenT governmenT room. The IasT and probably mosT imporTanT evenT, in The eyes of The sTudenT body, was The appro- val of nBermuda Dayu, which The firsT semesTer presidenf and I coIlaboraTed on. I hope ThaT my Term of office has led To a new Uwinning Eran aT Downey High, The School of Champions. BOB WILLIAMS Determined As ASB presidenT my major goal was To build sTudenT governmenf inTo a meaningful organiza- Tion. Our Council was blessed wlTh The perfecT opporTunlTy To achieve This goal, wITh a sTand for The Tax elecfion In Sepfember. The sTudenT body answered our call for help, and The odds againsT success were overcome. From ThaT polnT on everyone seemed To be on our side. The week of Ocfober Sl broughT us a sTep closer To our solid sTudenT governmenf. This was Vike Week, consisTing of nClash Dayn, NHaT Dayn, nTeachers' College Dayn, and nMaroon and WhiTe Day? ExcellenT parTIclpaTIon from boTh sTudenTs and faculTy made This acTlviTy worTh while. ln early November we Temporarily seT aside our rebuilding program To prepare for Homecom- ing. This evenT, and The CoronaTion Ball The following nighT were social hlghIighTs of The firsT semesTer. In December, lnTeracT Club, under The auTh- 0rlzaTion of STudenT Council Ing The Big D, and a campus insTiTuTed. January found The STudenT oraTed, and The quesT for a Tlnued. Our firsT semesTer ITS momenTs of unpopulariTy, buT by our sTand- ing up To be counTed we won our objecTive. , compleTed rais- beauTificaTion was Council room redec nBermuda Dayu con- STudenT Councilhad BILL LOPER

A Yeor IT was a year of financial crisis for The Downey Unified School DisTricT. Faced wiTh rislng cosTs of mainTainlng a program of quallTy educaTion, The Board of EducaTion wenT To The only source of revenue IefT To iT, The local Taxpayer, and asked The voTers To approve a Tax in- crease. WlThouT iT, The Board faced The unpleasanT Task of cuTTlng back on school programs, in- cluding inTerschol- asTic sporTs. On The oTher hand, Taxpay- ers, faced wiTh ris- ing Taxes each year, were noT very enThusiasTic abouT increasing Their burden. On eIecTion nighT, SepTember 20, The dlsTricT offices were filled wiTh sTudenTs, parenTs, faculTy, ad- minisTraTors and Board members, awaiTing The resulTs. As reporTs came in, preclncT by pre- clncT, iT was clear The voTe would be close.
