Head Chemistry Biology X 81 Xl Aeronautics Chemistry Physical Science Science Club Sponsor Biology X Science courses at Downey High include lite science, required usually in the sophomore year except for those students elect- ing to 'take biology in the eleventh grade, biology, a laboratory course in life science, open to juniors and seniors who have not had life science land tor college prep students who are required to have a lab science coursel, chemistry, tor which a previous course in algebra is recommended, physics, for seniors, and physiology, for juniors and seniors, with biology as a prerequi- site. Also included in the science curriculum are courses in phys- ical science survey and pre-flight aeronautics. The latter is a s.:rvey course covering the theory ot flight, civil air regulations, meteorology and navigation, A Link trainer is available to each student. ln this day ot space travel and scientific achievement, math- ematics is more and more important. Downey High offers courses in algebra, plane geometry, advanced math, practical math, and senior math. Advanced math is a seminar type course for students who are above average in scientific ability and interests. U.S. History U.S. History Government U.S. History California History Key Club Sponsor World History Chairman, CSF Sponsors Social studies include specific required subjects and oppor- tunities for supplementary study. Various aspects of society, from history and government to psychology are included in the curriculum. Social studies are required for all six semesters at Downey High. Sophomores are required to take a course in world geog- raphy for one semester, with the other half of the year given to driver education, Juniors are required to take U.S. History, which has as its objective the providing of the student with a basic understand- ing of heritage of American ideals of democratic government. Seniors are required to take a course in government, to get a knowledge of the working of national, state and local admin- istrations. Another course deals with the study of Communism, beginning with Karl Marx, and tracing its development in the Soviet Union, and the threat it presents to American democracy. World history is included in the curriculum, and deals with the development of mankind from the earliest known prehis- toric man, through the middle ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation to the present day and its problems. Students may take as an elective the study of California his- tory, which includes the earliest Indian cultures, the Spanish discovery and explorations, the succeeding Mexican and Amer- ican control. Present political structure and economic growth are included. College preparatory students may take a survey course in philosophy and psychology. The aim of these studies is to pre- sent the findings of psychology as they clarify and explain human behavior from infancy to maturity.
