Education trains the body as well as the mind Activity, attitude, achievement and attend- ance are the four principal considerations in determining a student's grade in physical edu- cation, which is required by the State of Cali- fornia tor the gaining of a high school diploma. Boys' gym classes cover football, basketball, softball ,speedball, volleyball and swimming. Classes rotate at regular intervals. For the girls, classes stress physical fitness, muscular and mental coordination and good sportsmanship. Special activities include drill teams, team sports, and an important auxiliary activity, the Girls' Athletic Association. Language is the key to understanding l,- ,. KIM i 21 0 1 , ,,f,, ,ff MRS. JUANA ACOSTA GLEN B. MARBLE Spanish ll Spanish I, II 81 IV Spanish Club Sponsor Downey High offers students a chance to learn any one ot four foreign languages, including Latin, which may be dead as a conversational communication, but is very much alive in all of the other languages studied, including English. Because of CaIitornia's large Spanish-speaking population, that language draws the most students, requiring four teachers to handle them, French and German are fairly recent additions to the cur- riculum, but have proved very popular. All ot the language classes have clubs which plan and pro- duce many projects which aid in the study ot the language and the peoples of the countries which speak it. They combined to have a Christmas party in December, the Spanish Club staged a Taco Fiesta ta scene from which is shown herelg the German Club had a festival with German food, and the Latin students staged their annual Roman Banquet. ia' RICHARD B.
