Among them are polishing of trophies, ushering at school functions, selling pompoms at football games, selling roses for the Rose Float Association to raise money for the Rose Float, cleaning campus, selling adver- tisements in the Norseman, and taking a survey of last year's seniors to find out what they are doing now. They established a Marcia Esping Memorial Scholarship, to be given to a senior member who exemplifies spirit of service, in honor of Marcia Esping, DSHS graduate of '61, and the president of the Normaneers when she attended Downey. She died in an automobile accident in November of l963. l2l

The club caters to the girls who are in- terested in becoming active members ot both school ancl community. Les Torcheres had many activities during the i963- 64 school year. As is their usual custom, they ushered and served at school tunctions, with Sword 84 Shield they co-sponsored the Sweethearts Ball, they presented a fashion show in connection with the installation ot second semester Girls' League otticers, they helped in the library, they celebrated 30 years ol service with an annual reunion on April Ql. Les Torcheres is also a club with scholastic interests, 1 and raised money to give a scholarship, they raised il:lOO tor AFS. Motto ot the club is: i'The highest and best be my goal. Shield is intended to be an honor service club tor boys. lts name was adopted to symbolize the Viking strength and action. Besides co-sponsoring with Les Torcheres the Sweet- hearts Ball, Sword 81 Shield staged the annual beard growing contest la scene from the iudging is shown at the leltl. Membership in the club is limited to 30. lt starts with ten seniors each year, and adds tive juniors each semester.
