Rai ing a Family for 111 Year We are only one generation away from ignorance .... Because of this disturbing fact, our state legislatures have created the public school system. And out of this system have risen giants. We here at Downey can claim three whose sum total of years devoted to curbing the frightening meaning in the above quote is 1171 This year marked the finale to their careers, as they seek rest and relaxation from the rigors of teaching, since they are retiring from their profession. Because of their outstanding service to our society, the administration decided to give them some public recognition, and at the half-time of the Downey-Poly football game on December 4, 1959, on Burbeck Field, there were three surprised teachers who HRS. KARYN li. SANDERS The song and yell leaders ran to escort the chosen three to a platform on Burbecl: Field. Then Mr. Shincy introduced each to the assembled crowd. First to be introduced was Mrs. Karyn Sanders, dean of girls and adviser to Girls' League. pls Mr. Shiney talked, the band strucl: up l'he Yellow Rose of Texas, since Mrs. Sanders is a native of the Lone Star State. To have l-gnown Karyn is to have known the full meaning of honesty. integrity, loyalty, he said. Xlrs. Sanders has taught 39 years. coming to Downey as a life science teacher in l929. ln her honor the Viltettes formed a heart, as the band played Young at llc-art,'1 were called down from the stands by Mr A. H. Shinev, former director of activities at DSHS, now vice principal at li oodruff junior High, and a close friend of each educator. fx M199 GR.-'lffli l UR . RIYDY COO PF R Next to be presented was Miss Grace Rand, and the band struck up Around the World in 80 Days, to highlight the many places Nliss Rand has visited, and the many more she plans to visit. To commemorate the S5 years she has spent at Downey as a teacher of Spanish, the band struck up The Mexican llat Dance, as the Yilcettes formed a sombrero. Bugler's Holiday rang out from the bandstand as a tribute was offered to klr. Rudy Cooper, teacher of vocal music, and the Yikettes once more gave a special performance, this one con- sisting of musical notes scattered over the gridiron. Fourteen of his thirty-nine teaching years have been spent at Downey cultivating voices for our hearing pleasure at assemblies and special programs. :Ks sponsor of Bible Club, klr. Cooper is Well-known by many. Each teacher was then presented with a dozen long-stemmed roses, while the students in the stands, the same ones who have been wildly cheering a football team just a few minutes before. rose and reverently sang the Alma Mater as a final honor to these educators.

Officially designated as Building K,the library is situated within a short distance of all the classrooms, especially the English and social studies classes which require more library work. Spacious and well-lighted inside, the library houses, in addition to books, many of the trophies and awards won by teams representing the school.
