One can live an entire litetime and never achieve anything really important- never leave his tootprints in the sands ot time- and yet is that what really counts? Shortly atter midnight, on a Saturday morning, February 23, l957, the lives ot tour young people, Pat Read, Bob Jensen, Mary Monroe and Rick Moore, were abruptly ended when the car in which they were riding slcidded in the path ot an on-coming bus. Three ot them were trom Downey. We were shocked, because they were our triends, and very dear to us. These teen- agers, who actually had not lived more than Pae2 a traction ot a litetime, lett something much deeper than tootsteps or words. lt's a sort ot teeling that all ot us have, a memory - deep and untorgettable. The ideals that these three represent constitute a true American teenager, tor that is what they were. They laughed and loved tun, iust as we do: and they were growing up, iust as we are-striving to become people, each a genuine person in his own right. You see, we can understand their lives, because ours are similar, but not quite the same. They were ready, and we are not. That is the answer, the only possible answer, to the many whysl To the ideals they stood tor, and tor the memories they lett in our hearts, we humbly otter this l957 edition ot the Volsung.
