Representative government Most of us have been accustomed to living in a country with a government of the people, by the people, and for the people since our earliest memories, Few of us, however, realize that this tradition of self-government was first established in the New World by the Norseman adventurers, who in 930 AD. came to Iceland and founded what is now generally regarded as the Mother of Parlia- ments. This same assembly, called the Althing, is still in existence in Iceland and its influence has spread throughout the New World. Here at DSHS we continue our Viking heritage of self-government by the election of student leaders by stu- dent votes. Each semester a new cabinet is elected. Mark Mandala, first semester president and Vic Macias, second semester president, have led these cabinets in making de- cisions benefiting the school, student service, and promoting school spirit. Achievements of the first semester cabinet started off wfth plans for a Victory Bell, presented by the class of '53, and the Viking Head, presented by the class of '54, MARK MAN DALA President first Semester Stueent Council RICHARD OFFUTT Q Vice President BARBARA JOHNSON Secretary htm V rr at-K, .W X f Ar .--- fr Bottom: Jim Johnson tJunior Class Presidentl, Barbara Adams lAsiembly Chair- n' Breat McDowell lSophomore Class Presidentl, Dottie Manker tGErls' mg i' i ..
