Chieftains The Viking Story continues in this i955 summary of our activities. The pictures we see and the items we read tell of our current achievements and successes, but when we look again at the pictures and read a little between the lines we sense the drama behind these successes. Here are revealed the efforts and loyalty of strong student leaders and willing teachers. Here is the story of a student body moving steadily toward success by reason of courage, determination, and good sportsmanship. Here we find again the spirit of the Viking. W. J. WRIGHT Principal MRS. KARYN B. SANDERS Registrar and Girls' Counselor Continued to be Vickie's real friend, acting as adviser to Girls' League and Les Torcheres, girls' service club. If anything concerned girls, Mrs. Sanders was there. MR, STANLEY R. BURGGRAAF Vice Principal Who sometimes wondered if there was any problem not referred to him. He acted as adviser to Student Court, arranged for seventh periods for those who didn't use all ofthe regular six, straightened out locker trouble, and just about everything else, and yet managed to keep his good humor. ku-...L MR. WILLIAM J. WRlGHT Principal Who took time off from his many responsibilities to write the cbove message to you. A-Xl n,,t A Page l l

Viking Much pleasure is derived from my position as director of a large group of active students and faculty members who exemplify the Viking spirit. We are reminded of the nomadic men of the dif- ferent ages and in the different regions of the world, how they devoted their energies and efforts first to the conquering of the elements and finally to the building up of strong and powerful countries. These same domineering conquering character- istics changed over the centuries to peaceful, in- dustrious, kindly attitudes which are today so com- pletely exhibited by the descendants of the early Vikings. ln much the same way the public school has developed from lowly beginnings into a program involving cooperative planning in the hope of pro- ducing alert, energetic, courageous, straight-think- ing, fair-minded citizens who have the ability, de- sire and understanding necessary to make American democracy live. C. F. SHAMBAUGH District Superintendent MR. CLIFFORD F. SHAMBAUGI-l District Superintendent Who is every bit as busy as this picture makes him appear. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Although they are unknown to many of the students, the Board of Trustees is the most important single group in the Downey Union High School District. These men are elected by the people, and give up their time to serve without pay, from a sense of civic duty. As in the past years, the main problem still is to provide buildings and teachers for the tremendous growth in popu- lation which has come to Downey. MR. L, H. WILLIAMS Assistant Superintendent in Charge of Business Who keeps a sharp eye on the lookout for values. age llfl BOARD OF TRUSTEES Mr, Frank Barnes, Dr. Leon Wright lclerk of the boardl, Superintendent Shambaugh Mr. Melvin Quigley, Mr. Ernie McCallum ipresidentl, Dr. S. P. Strong
