Viking Much pleasure is derived from my position as director of a large group of active students and faculty members who exemplify the Viking spirit. We are reminded of the nomadic men of the dif- ferent ages and in the different regions of the world, how they devoted their energies and efforts first to the conquering of the elements and finally to the building up of strong and powerful countries. These same domineering conquering character- istics changed over the centuries to peaceful, in- dustrious, kindly attitudes which are today so com- pletely exhibited by the descendants of the early Vikings. ln much the same way the public school has developed from lowly beginnings into a program involving cooperative planning in the hope of pro- ducing alert, energetic, courageous, straight-think- ing, fair-minded citizens who have the ability, de- sire and understanding necessary to make American democracy live. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Although they are unknown to many of the students, the Board of Trustees is the most important single group in the Downey Union High School District. These men are elected by the people, and give up their time to serve without pay, from a sense of civic duty. As in the past years, the main problem still is to provide buildings and teachers for the tremendous growth in popu- lation which has come to Downey. MR. L, H.
