And Provide For Our Needs BOARD OF TRUSTEES It's a good thing that the men who wrote our state Constitution cared enough about us to establish and maintain a system ot public education, This was Vic's reaction when his curiosity led him to find out who pays tar his school, who owns it, who sees to it that he has everything that is needed to make it a good school. The schools of California, he found, belong to the people, and they have good schools, mediocre schools or bad schools in direct proportion to the interest in the welfare of public education taken by the men and women of the local community. l-le learned that through the years the state has adopted laws which delegate to the local districts the responsibility and authority tor the operation and maintenance ot schools. l-le learned that the men pictured on this page give of their time, energy and wisdom, serving without salary, providing tor his needs, in order that he will have a good school, and it you ask Vic, he has a good school. Mrs. Verna Bennett Mrs. Virglnia White Mrs. Juanita Burda Mrs. Ruth Shasha Secretaries Vic suddenly became aware that his school is growing-growing rapidly. Indicative of the growth ofthe school is the increase in the number of secretaries now employed at Downey High School. Not long ago the school had only two secretaries who served both the Senior High and Junior High, now there are eight who serve the Senior High alone. Mrs. Bennett is the PBX operator and clerical secretary. Taking care of attendance matters is Mrs, White, while Mrs. Burda is secretary to Mr. Shambaugh. The general office secretary is Mrs. Shasha. The secretary to the plant superintendent, Mr. Thomas Fleming, is Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Park is the secretary to Mr. Williams, the busness manager. In charge of money matters are Mrs. Rich, who is the payroll secretary, and Mrs, Woodward, who is the financial secretary.
