And Provide For Our Needs BOARD OF TRUSTEES It's a good thing that the men who wrote our state Constitution cared enough about us to establish and maintain a system ot public education, This was Vic's reaction when his curiosity led him to find out who pays tar his school, who owns it, who sees to it that he has everything that is needed to make it a good school. The schools of California, he found, belong to the people, and they have good schools, mediocre schools or bad schools in direct proportion to the interest in the welfare of public education taken by the men and women of the local community. l-le learned that through the years the state has adopted laws which delegate to the local districts the responsibility and authority tor the operation and maintenance ot schools. l-le learned that the men pictured on this page give of their time, energy and wisdom, serving without salary, providing tor his needs, in order that he will have a good school, and it you ask Vic, he has a good school. President Melvin Quigley Secretary Frank Barnes Mr. Reno Sirrine Dr. Leon A. Wright Dr. Schuyler P. Strong Page 7 Mrs. Verna Bennett Mrs. Virglnia White Mrs. Juanita Burda Mrs. Ruth Shasha Secretaries Vic suddenly became aware that his school is growing-growing rapidly. Indicative of the growth ofthe school is the increase in the number of secretaries now employed at Downey High School. Not long ago the school had only two secretaries who served both the Senior High and Junior High, now there are eight who serve the Senior High alone. Mrs. Bennett is the PBX operator and clerical secretary. Taking care of attendance matters is Mrs, White, while Mrs. Burda is secretary to Mr. Shambaugh. The general office secretary is Mrs. Shasha. The secretary to the plant superintendent, Mr. Thomas Fleming, is Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Park is the secretary to Mr. Williams, the busness manager. In charge of money matters are Mrs. Rich, who is the payroll secretary, and Mrs, Woodward, who is the financial secretary. Buildings have to be cleaned, equipment has to be repaired. New classrooms have to be provided for an increasing number of students. How does all this come about? Port of Vic's curiosity was answered when he learned about Mr, Thomas Flem- ing, the plant engineer, and the peo- ple who work with him and under his general direction, shown in the pic- tures to the left. ln the top picture are: Top row: Plant Engineer Thomas Fleming Mrs. Grace Tucker, secretary, S. Stages of this work can be seen in the pictures below. The build- ing is expected to be ready for use when school re-opens in September. l' ,2 To Keep the Whee Providing for Vic's arrival at school on time, and his safe return home is a fleet of big 80-passenger buses, with Bus Dispatcher VV. F. McEuen arrang- ing the schedule and supervisng the drivers. This year, for th: first t me, Downey Union High School has employed only women as regular drivers, after ex- perimenting with this arangement last year. They have proved themselves capable, and their popularity with Vic and his friends is growing. These buses also take students on field trips, athletic teams to rival schools, and aid many school groups to participate in outside activities. In addition they serve both the junior high schools and the elemen- tary school. Service to the school is the guiding ideal ot this organization, and membership in this club is one at the most coveted honors which any girl in Downey High can attain. Besides ushering at school functions and serving at banquets, they obtained and operated the paper and pencil machine in the main hall. This year all the girls and their sponsor, Mrs, Karyn Sanders, worked industriously at their annual reunion. Members are chosen on the basis of grades, leadership ability, and initiative. First semester officers were inducted at a breakfast in the cafeteria January 9, second semester officers in a similar ceremony March 25. They operated a refreshment stand at the league track finals, and undertook such projects as policing the campus, but perhaps the biggest affair undertaken was Viking Day, consisting of many varieties of intramural sports for both boys and girls, on May 28. A Pan-American club was organ- ized in each Spanish class through the election of club officers--the club meetings being held during class time every other Friday with infor- mative reports and discussions taking place. The Christmas season provided a host of merry times for the Spanish students. Among them were the trfmming of the Christmas tree for the main office and the traditional Christmas partes which included the breaking of the candy-filled pinatas. Other club actIvities included a field trip to the San Gabriel Mission and a Dutch auction- the proceeds of which went toward the education of the Navajo Indians. Classes in French were added to the Lan- guage Department this year, thus allowing Dow- ney High School to now boast three foreign languages in its curriculum. Motivated by the supervision of t h e t w o French teachers- Madame Margaret West a n d Mademoiselle Gratia Boynton-and the leadership of the elected officers from each class, the French Club is fast establishing itself on the campus. Remember the football and basketball games? lt takes a great band to keep up the lite and spirit ot the rooters. Then the band gave a concert on May l9, which made everyone tingle with pride and joy. Not only has the band won recognition at home, but won high honors elsewhere. lt took second place at the Long Beach parade, received top ratings in Inglewood and Fullerton contests, Three members, Janice Hansen, Frosty Duerden, and Diane Humphrey were selected to play in the all-Southern California band, and seven mem- bers, Ronnie Miller, Sandra Nelson, Dave Dahlem, Jeanine DeHart, Bob Smith, Frosty and Diane were selected to be part ot the East Los Angeles Invitational Band. Downey's racquetmen started out their i953 tennis season with a bang as they won their first four matches in practice play. After this fast sta rt they slowed down and only won 3 of their re- maining ll games to wind up fifth in the Coast League race. The only team that the Vikings were able to knock over in league play was Long Beach wilson, and they did this twice. The members of the team that totaled the most points were Tom Barnes and lrv'ng Ross, playing first doubles. They were closely followed by Mike Muravez, ploy ng first singles.
