Merle Tab., Guidance and . . . Physical health and mental health are complementary to each other. The ancient Romans recognized thEs long ago when they spoke of a sound mind in a sound body. Co-operating closely to make this a reality at Downey are Dr Merle Taber, general consultant, and Mrs, Sarah Lyance, school nurse. Though this is Dr. Taber's first year as a member of the Downey family, she is no stranger to Downey students. For the past several years she has been an invited guest in the senior problems classes, and has discussed every- day student perplexities in private conferences, and in addition, she has made many public appearances in this community. She is well-qualified for her position. For many years, her work as teacher, dean and lecturer has brought her into intimate daily contact with typical classroom and home problems. Now, as general consultant for Downey Senior High, Central Junior High, and South Junior High Schools, she is available daily for conferences with parents, teachers and students. nf, Page 41 Caring for the physical well-being of students is Mrs. Sarah Lyance, the school nurse, She is one of the busiest people on the Downey campus, and her attempts to maintain a schedule of appointments are constantly interrupted by emergencies of both major and m'nor im- portance. She has been aided in her work this year by an audiometer pur- chased for the school by fund-raising efforts of the Parent-Teacher Association, and this has been very important in getting at the cause of unsatisfactory work of some students. Mrs. Lyance, too, is well-qualified for her position. She attended college in Cincinnati, Ohio, then was graduated as a nurse from a hos- pital, then continued her education at Columbia University, and later at the University of California at Berkeley. Here she obtained her bachelor of science degree, in addition to certificates required by state law for all school nurses. Mrs. Sarah Lyance 1
