swiss DANCING i '52 Q ' cwwffxi -r M ,wfb ' Ffiii' Q2f'1'f,. . .sv ,kv lp f I x .. 1. X. .X , Foreword ...... Although square dancing has its origins far back in Europearl folk dancing, it is as American as baseball, hot dogs, or a coke ot the dorner drug store. The pioneers who came to this new world, during the Elizabethan period and later, brought these folk dances with them and carried them along as the young nation expanded westward. The square dance as we k ow it today has evolved as result of the originality of these pioneers, with early all sections of the country contributing something to the figures, patter s and calls, and even today the some dances vary widely in different parts f our nation. Square dancing is more popular today than at any time in its history, and all indications are that it is not a short-lived fad, but will be with a long time to come, perhaps because its roots go so deeply into our American culture. s for basic Members of the Volsung staff have chosen the square dance as the theme of this year's book for many of the same reasons which mok dance itself so popular. For one thing, square dancing means friendliness and sociability the world right now could use a great deal more of both. lf you aren' ing to be friendly and sociable, you might as well forget about square ing. If you are quick to anger, especially at other people's mistake won't find much fun in square dancing, and will soon give it up. Square dancing also means organization. All of the dances have patterns which make them easy to learn after a little instruction and tice. e the , and will- onc- , you basic prac- Square dancing means co-operation and teamwork, with each member of the set doing his own part in time and sequence. Square dancing, to be successful in its purpose, requires attentio obedience. Since any single dance pattern depends on the words caller, every member of the square must listen to the caller and foll instructions. Otherwise, there is confusion, although the confusion put straight again quickly and easily. and f the w his y be Sociologists who make a study of our social habits probably will lagree that square dancing is going to benefit the country, with everyone, from tots to totterers, having more fun than they've ever had before. It is a co-cLpera- tive thing, helping people to play together with friendliness and unselfisl ness, just as a fragment of one call says: X Your girl's pretty, so is mine, l'll swing yours and you swing mine.
