PEACE IN OUR TIME? Early in the year, the sundial standard was broken by vandals during the evening of a football game. lf any symbolism might be drawn from this occurrence, this broken symbol of time could be compared to the broken state of relationships between nations of the world. Through the initiative of Quill and Scroll, the sundial was restored after the parts had been carefully saved by Mr, George Terrell. lt will take the initiative and effort of our generation and perhaps many others, to restore the broken state of the world, and make peace more than just a breathing-time between wars. Dedication .YoIhi'ng is so dear cmd precious as l1'l77E'.H From the pen of Francois Rabelais these words are clearly written and may be clearly understood by every' one who reads them. Time, never stopping and never returning, passes ever so quickly leaving behind only memories. Few people realize the importance of time and do not use it to the best advantage. The high school senior recalls the good and bad times of his school days and begins to realize that time should be enjoyed, yet not wasted. Every minute ot time should be put to good use. Students not only in Downey but all over the world have learned to use their time to promote more love, friendship, and consideration. Yes, youth has learned the precious value of time well spent. To you-the future youth of Downey High School who will use their time to promote the better things in life-this Volsung of i950 is sincerely dedicated. LOOKING NORTH ON CHURCH STREET N Xtss..

MR W WRIGHT l Vice Principal Senior High There are many duties which go with the title of Vice Principal lt is Mr Wrights responsibility to act as general resgistrar n Senior High to advise students on the arrangement of schedules to supervise extra curricular activi ties to make home contacts with parents regarding boys adjust ment problems and to act as ad viser to the student body govern ment The four cornerstones of success are Character. Health, Personality and Knowledge. The first three of these qualities have to do with the individual. They are part of his life and must be developed by him. The fourth, knowledge, is out- side of the individual. lts acquisition depends upon the developing of certain personality qualities, chief of which are ambition, a desire for knowledge and a desire to render service. Without ambition and a desire for knowledge there is no incentive to acquire an education. The lack of incentive for knowledge is no doubt a nation's greatest handicap. Since three fourths of these fundamentals relate to the individual, it would seem that three fourths of an individuaI's success would depend upon the human element and one fourth upon knowledge.
