Time, never stopping and never returning, passes ever so quickly leaving behind only memories. Few people realize the importance of time and do not use it to the best advantage. The high school senior recalls the good and bad times of his school days and begins to realize that time should be enjoyed, yet not wasted. Every minute ot time should be put to good use. Students not only in Downey but all over the world have learned to use their time to promote more love, friendship, and consideration. Yes, youth has learned the precious value of time well spent. To you-the future youth of Downey High School who will use their time to promote the better things in life-this Volsung of i950 is sincerely dedicated. LOOKING NORTH ON CHURCH STREET N Xtss.. PEACE IN OUR TIME? Early in the year, the sundial standard was broken by vandals during the evening of a football game. lf any symbolism might be drawn from this occurrence, this broken symbol of time could be compared to the broken state of relationships between nations of the world. Through the initiative of Quill and Scroll, the sundial was restored after the parts had been carefully saved by Mr, George Terrell. lt will take the initiative and effort of our generation and perhaps many others, to restore the broken state of the world, and make peace more than just a breathing-time between wars. AND EAST ON FIRESTONE BOULEVARD 5M-., Vuxv had hh-5,4 MR W WRIGHT l Vice Principal Senior High There are many duties which go with the title of Vice Principal lt is Mr Wrights responsibility to act as general resgistrar n Senior High to advise students on the arrangement of schedules to supervise extra curricular activi ties to make home contacts with parents regarding boys adjust ment problems and to act as ad viser to the student body govern ment The four cornerstones of success are Character. Health, Personality and Knowledge. The first three of these qualities have to do with the individual. They are part of his life and must be developed by him. The fourth, knowledge, is out- side of the individual. lts acquisition depends upon the developing of certain personality qualities, chief of which are ambition, a desire for knowledge and a desire to render service. Without ambition and a desire for knowledge there is no incentive to acquire an education. The lack of incentive for knowledge is no doubt a nation's greatest handicap. Since three fourths of these fundamentals relate to the individual, it would seem that three fourths of an individuaI's success would depend upon the human element and one fourth upon knowledge. Best wishes to every Downey Union High School student and may your every effort be crowned with success. C F SHAMBAUCH District Superintendent MR DEL WARD Principal unior High Mr Ward has general super vision of instruction in unior High and also is charged with the responsibility of supervising at tendance and student conduct He is boys counselor as well as adviser to the student body gov ernment and makes arrangements for assemblies to be attended by junior High students He also has general supervision of all extra curricular activities MR EINAR KNUDSEN Adult School Supervisor Mr Knudsen takes care of all arrangements for scheduling reg istermg and supplying instruc tion for the adult education program in Downey Union High School Day classes as well as evening classes are included in this pro gram In addition to his duties as adult education supervisor M Knudsen is also in charge of all audio visual materials for both Senior and junior High fiitii f MRS. In addition to these duties, Mrs. Sanders has one class in life science. MISS LORING DAVIS Miss Davis came to Downey this year to fill the newly-created position of supervisor of child welfare. Although she is charged with the usually unpleasant duty of checking on non-attendance, she early won the respect and friendship of the students who fell within her disciplinary duties. Miss Davis also has the duty of issuing work permits, and helps students who wish to work to find places. MRS. RUBY HORSTMAN Mrs. Horstman fills the posi- tion of Girls' Counselor in junior High, and as such is adviser to the junior High Girls' League. She has been instrumental in discovering eye and ear troubles in time to get the students started on corrective treatment. 1 i NEIL T ROGERS President OTTO T BOYD FRANK BARNES SAM UNSWORTH ROY L TOMPKINS Board Of Education The Board of Education is made up of five men of the community who donate their time and energy freely to the solving of all problems concerning the school. With the growth of the Downey community still swelling the number of students of high school age, an expansion program has been necessary, and this has occupied most of their attention during this year. The board meets regularly once a month, but the president, Mr. Neil T. Rogers, can call a special meeting whenever it is necessary to deal with important business. The class of l95O feels that this last year has been a good one. As they look back over the past, they can remember the expectancy with which they faced their high school years. For some, all the things which were hoped for in fun and laughter came true, and for all high school was an important stepping stone to the future. Outstanding in the memory of the seniors this year was the Senior Breakfast, where, while helping to strengthen a tradition at Downey, they received their senior sweaters, Then came Senior Privilege Day, held at Irvine Park. Then the seniors presented their best talent in their class play, The C-lass Menagerie, March 23 and 24. ln-june, many of the seniors displayed their funny bones in their annual talent show, which was presented in the morning, and the the entire class spent the afternoon in the park and the plunge. Senior Tea and baccalaureate services ended the year, and the class of 1950 then bid a sad farewell as grad- uation was held, and thus: departing leave behind, Footprints on the sands of Time, i ' 1- ' I il K ' SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS SECOND SEMESTER David Cramer, vice-president, Anita Voge, sec- retaryg joyce Haynes, treasurer, Charles Carpenter, president. All classes in journalism are under the direction of Mr. Thomas johnson. The ninth grade class gathers news and writes copy for the junior l-ligh section of the Norseman. They must meet deadlines just as the regular staff class does, and the class itself is conducted much on the order of the staff class. The journalism l class is composed of juniors and seniors who wish to go into one of the staff classes sometime later, or who want to learn the principles of journalism. The art of news writing, feature writing, and sports writing is studied as well as proper capitalization, headline writing, word usage, and proper arrangement of news on a page. This year in order to give those really interested in acting, and the various phases of dramatics a chance to do something constructive and helpful, a special group known as the acting group was formed. This group alter- nates meetings with the large group. The large group carried its regular meetings, first dealing with the business on hand and then cuttings, skits or plays are presented by the acting group. A Fine Arts program consisting of music, dancing. and a monologue, was presented in the high school auditorium Friday night, january l3. Their only league victory was a face-saving game with Huntington Beach, whom they pushed into last place. The season opened with a bad Omen, as our Norse fell l2-6 in a practice game against Bell Gardens, but a second practice fray with Citrus resulted in a thumping Norse victory. A series of costly injuries resulted in a weakened Viking eleven that opened the league season with a 39-l3 loss to Santa Ana. The next three league games favored the Vikings only once, when they defeated Huntington Beach, l9-6, but lost to Anaheim, 28-6, and Orange, l4-O. With hopes high the Vikings played their hearts out in an attempt to upset mighty Fuller- ton, Ieague champs, On a wet, muddy field they failed by a whisker, as the Indians won, l9-l3. A costly venture to Newport then resulted in a 40-O runaway by the Sailors for the season's worst mark. However, with a new league, and new opponents to play, the Viking hopes are riding high for next season. MANAGERS TIME OUT A TENSE MOMENT BEE FOOTBALL SEASON Opening their l949 season against Bell Gardens, the Bees virtually stopped the Lancers in their tracks, and then added up nine points of their own. This, coupled with a ZO-7 thumping of the Citrus Cougars, had' the makings of a successful season. However, with the league opener against Santa Ana came defeat, l4-7, The luck of the practice tilts held the following week though, as the Vikings smothered Rosemead, 25-6. Going back into league competition resulted in defeats at the hands of Anaheim, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, and a l3-l3 deadlock with Orange. With one punch still left in them, the middleweights ended the season as they started, with a bang, by trouncing Newport, l8-6. . 4s,l9 3 3 Qgf 0 hem 48 SES s ,.,2Sh:i'S-G X s 9 3 9424443 'Es-vas! Many of the games went by wide margins and many provided thrilling climaxes in the closing seconds of play. A hearbreaker was lost to Rosemead by a treethrow in the last second while in return the Vikings gained a similar decision with a field goal over Huntington Beach. The brightest victory of the Viking season was a 54-38 shellacking of the Orange catmen. In a return engagement with Rosemead, the Norse sub- dued the Panthers, 59-37 for the second high spot in a better than usual Viking season. The team will be hard hit by graduation, and as they enter a new league next year it will be with practically a new team. The Bees fared worst of the Viking teams. They finally came through with a league win over Fullerton at the last of the season. In many of the games they came close to the victory point but lacked the experience to get them over the top. However the Cees and Dees made up for other losses by gaining their share of vic- tories in their team contests. WATER POLO SEASON Continuing to gain favor as a major sport at Downey, water polo teams pushed more and more into the win column this year. Led by Captain john jennings, goalie, and paced by David Van Couvering, forward, the varsity managed to come up with their share of victories. Redlands was scuttled. 8-4, Leuzinger, 7-3, and Anaheim, 5-4 and 8-4. to make the bright spots in the season. However, it was the Bees who carried the attack, Vxfith a record of eight victories to five losses, they were a constant threat to all opponents. They fought all the way, and many of their victories came after an uphill fight. Cees did a little better than their big brothers, ending the season with six victories to four losses to gain second place in the league. The Bees and Cees, however, had this, plus the first place men, to make them a constant winning threat. The season started with the Bee and Cee medley and relay team getting into the C.l.F. semi-finals. The first dual meet against Mt. Carmel went in the Vikings favor 84-74V2. the Bees and Cees winning their meets by large margins and making up the varsity's lack of points. The subsequent league games did not fare so well for the Norse. The Bees and Cees gained their share of the top laurels, but the varsity was only able to go as far as they could stretch their team members. The last meet of the season was the Sunset League finals at Fullerton. Though they met some strong compe- tition the Vikings racked up several place medals and qite a few boys got into the Southern California finals, and Don Severa took a first place in the 50-yard free-style. 0 v , W I K 15 . s, - ..,.,,,, Va , W ,w A ' M ,4 ' , , ' ,,,,W4sf'fW - I , ,W I f::-',, fz:a2a:?- ,.,,,.3, U., 'ff ,W Y M, awfgaw .,f ,a-www: , N aw ,- - ..:... - gk M N Q fd in 4 W, . . . . . . . . , - - I , V - , , . . . . . v -4 1 1 . . , , ' .
