'L11' 2.111 Ping Foreword As we look back over the years that we have experienc- ed we see that they have been good progressive years. W 6 l'1CIVe witnessed OUI'SelVeS YUG- ture from childhood to 0 Y uns manhood and womanhood. lt h as been a true awakening to see our lives shaped and moulded in front of our own eyes. We stop and wonder-how much harder it would be for us if these were the days of l849 instead of l949. We wouldn't have the comfortable modern schools of today, nor would we have the trained teachers. Our course would proba- bly consist of readin', writin', and 'rithmetic instead of geometry, chemistry, and languages of all kinds. Yes, those trail blazers of l849 left a clear path behind them. Looking back over those years we see their failures and successes and we profit by them. ln the same way we look back over our own lives and profit. ln the past year many things of great importance have happened to us. So we the Staff of the Volsung have record- ed these happenings in words and pictures so that you can look back and remember the school ea f - b k ' y r o l948 49. Youth, in its struggle for equality, kes and enforces laws. Youth, in its desire for peace goes to battle. The classes at Downey High School have completed another year. Most ot the students still have one or two more years to complete ' I high school. Members of the senior cass, however, are ready to take their places in col- lege, business or homes.
