In moving forward With Mr. Lee R. Dickerson serving his last term as president, the Downey Union High School Board of Trustees completed an- other very successful year in advising the school on general policies and various programs. Mr. Dickerson resigned in mid-March in order to take a position as official inspector on the new school construction which was begun this year. His resignation was legally necessary in order for him to qualify for the inspector's position. He was succeeded as president by Mr. Neil Rogers, formerly clerk of the board, whose vacancy in turn was filled by Mr. Frank Barnes. Mr. Dickerson had served as a member of the board from I936 to l942, and from l943 to the date of his resignation. Major project of the board at the present time is the building program. Eight new classrooms and a girls' locker and shower rooms are being constructed, and a new athletic field is under way. Long range goals of the board are to maintain a good faculty, good student programs, and good buildings and equipment. If L ' fe ' D Dresfbferifffgksow MR. ROY L. TOMPKINS MR. SAMUEL F. UNSWORTH MR. A relief in our classroom situation. An ambitious building program for a long range plan is now launched. The teacher shortage is still acute, and is likely to become more so, but we are con- fident that the local in- stitution will continue with its high educational standards. Teach- ers and pupils alike found the learning facilities hampered beyond measure. We here at Downey High School likewise had our troubles. Crowded conditions, lack of materials, the teacher shortage and other such inconveniences all con- tributed to our disadvantage. Now, much like the reconstruction and readjustment taking place on the world scene, we here on the educational front are gearing ourselves for the long, uncertain period ahead.
