To Miss Muriel Powell and Mr. P. 1. Burbeck for their many loyal years of service at Downey high school, this 1945 VOLSUNC is hereby dedicated. YESTERDAY -- Mr. Burbeck came to our high school in 1921 from Santa Ana and Miss Powell started teaching here in 1925 upon transferring from Corona. There were 135 students enrolled here at that time. TODAY - During this present term, 1944-1945, they are still a part of our school system and you will find them ever ready to help and encourage us in our school problems. After 20 years of teaching, Miss Powell still leads many school activi- ties. She is adviser of the California Scholarship Federation, English teacher, and director of the senior play. Mr. Burbeck has complete charge of a 4-H club, teaches mechanical drawing and assists in athletic contests. These teachers have watched the student body increase from 135 to the present number of 1150. TOMORROW -- This year they will say goodbye to students they have known for many years and welcome the new students from the junior high and surrounding areas, and tomorrow they will continue to advise Downey students in becoming worthy citizens of our school and nation.
