The first is from the pen of our eminent novelist, Upton Sinclair, author of The Wet Pa' nude, who is supreme as an interpreter of Amerif can social problems, The other contribution is offered by Geoffrey Morgan, who has endeared himself to high school students by such delightful .mperettas as The Belle of Bagdadf' The first challenge voices the great problem of distribution: I hope that at least one student in your class will learn to realize that millions should be starving in a country which can produce plenty for all. N APPEAL is made to us to realize our indif vidual responsibility: In the long run, sucf cess and achievement depend chiefly on the will to win, the effort to achieve, and the ambition to be successful. If these are lacking, then success is not for you. My chief wish for you is that your four years in Downey I-Iigh School have enabled you to catch the spirit of Tennyson's Ulysses, who was 'Strong in will to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield' I' Sincere 1 P .l4l.g,L if f r, - F. IUQS, we, the class of 'Sl entered Downey Union High School as Freshmen, XXX' had the reputation of lieing the largest class up tc that time and we proved to he one of the hrightest classes. The willingness of its memlvers to talte an active part in Student Body projects did not sulastantiate the old saying that all Freshmen are green and timid. Both hoys and girls participated in class and school athletics, in the opcretta. cluhs. plays. and other activities. Besides our entertainment at the Freshmen's Reception. we royally enyoyed ourselves with a hardftime party in the gymnasium. The Sophomore year of l9'lUf3li proved even more successful and progressive than the preceding one, As Sophomores we acquired a fine class spirit and much enthusiasm was shown in selling tickets for school entertainments. trying out for the plays, and the Uratorieal Contest. Ill which one of our girls won first place. During the year our class made a very good showing in athletics as well as scholarship. A: wc look hack upon our career as juniors, we are very proud of liaying com pletetl with much distinction the first year of upper class life with its many responsif hilitie-' and honors, The presentation of the -lunior play. The Arrival of Kitty. gave evidence of new talent. Half of the proceeds were donated to the Student Body Vv'e consider our Alunior year full of accomplishment. ln eyery hranch of athletics we took the lead, and a memher of our class again won first place In the school tryfouts for the Uratorieal Contest, Vvfe also secured several leads in the flD'SI'CllAl and Student Body Play. The most important social event of the year was the Mpromi' at which we entertained the Seniors and rendered them a suitahle farewell. Our rings have heen the enyy of all thc lower classinen and are superior to any ever shown hy memhers of a graduating class. As Seniors the dream of previous years was realized. As most of our readers probably know, we had to work under diihculties which were due to limited linances. Therefore, we could not put in as many cartoons and pic' tures as we desired. However, we have attempted to land material that will make the edition interesting. We believe we have succeeded in noting all the outstanding events and achievements of this term, although the articles appear in a much more compact form, We also have accomplished our aim in bringing you something new the division into hooks and the indentihcation of pictures, It is the desire of every member of the Summary staff to express his sincere appreciation to any one who has in any way contributed to its success. We have sought to make this a book that we shall all read with the greatest pleasure after we have graduated. To that end we have spent our best efforts. If we have in some measure succeeded, we shall feel that this has been time well spent in a way that will be of great value to us in later years as well as a pleasure now. In reading this Summary , whether now or in later years, may you realize a truer loyalty to D, U, H. S. May you experience a deeper and sweeter memory of your school days here. l A 1 . It is true that change toward perfec- tion involves sacrifice and hardship but the result is gratifying. The formation of a perfect pearl involves irritation that must be overcome by the patience and labor of the sea animal. In a similar manner has our great nation been developed through numerous hardships which were met and overcome by the brave men of our history. Our America has undergone change after change, and as each situation has demanded a remedy, our Constitution has met the need without sacrincing the ideals of the heroes who framed it. Immediately after the drafting of the Constitu- tion, the fathers of the Confederation realized that the new government had failed to guarantee to the people such basic liberties as freedom of speech, press, and religion, trial by jury, and protection from unjust searches and seizures. With the Bill of Rights, the American interpretation of those testaments of freedom, adopted after ages of strug- gle against the tyranny and divinity of kings by the English speaking race, the ideal of individual liberty was fully assured to the people. Under this Constitution young America developed and became a thriving nation. Then came the crisis of the Civil W'ar, which proved to be a real test of the stability and endur- ance of America. Strife arose within our own borders and the nation was divided against itself. The question of states rights had to be met. The final test came. W'ould the Constitution be able to hold together the seceding South and the deter- mined North? W'ar was declared and slavery be- came av question of tremendous importance. The ideal of personal freedom could not be realized as long as the white man held his black brother in bondage, but America was able to erase this ugly blot on its pages of history by the addition of three amendments, making the negro forever free and ridding our nation of one of its most deadly enemies. slavery. The supremacy and adaptability of the Consti- tution having been proved thus far, the courage and determination of a new and growing America led our people into an era of undreamed-of de- .rcs Changing America velopment. America was passing through a chang- ing state. livery year contributed to the success and perfection of a great nation, destined to become a world power. Inventions, discoveries, and achieve- ments in every field spurred her on to higher attainments. The nations of the world began to take notice of her. Interests and relationships with every country became broader. The influence of American power permeated to the far corners of the earth. Izach new territory was placed under the care and protection of a nation upheld by a stable Constitution. These changing conditions demanded a similarly changing government, a gov- ernment capable of fulfilling each new demand of our citizenship. The recent social. economic, and political needs in our national life have been admirably met in the final four amendments to the Constitution. Was it not just to relieve the oppressed poor by shifting the burden of the financial support of the govern- ment to the wealthy class? The amendment pro- viding for an income tax affecting only those who were fully able to furnish such aid was passed. A further step toward a democratic ideal came when the people were given the privilege of selecting by direct vote the ablest of men to fairly represent them in the Senate. Thus, economic and political issues arising through the years have been solved through the amending power of our Constitution. Modern society has been influenced to a large extent by two great problems-Prohibition and W'oman's Suffrage. W'hat was to be the fate of our national morality if the youth of America were not protected against the evils of the liquor traffic? Realizing the importance of healthy bodies and wholesome character traits in our people, the Iiighteenth Amendment was adopted to insure legal protection against a degrading force. The final amending gesture came with the recognition of women, not only as homemakers, but as vital con- tributors to our political stability. The progress of women in all lines of national activity had been increasing steadily and the Nineteenth Amendment gave them full rights of citizenship. Is it not now the task as well as the privilege of the American woman to protect the interests of her home and children by the wise use of the ballot? Thus, the nineteen amendments which stand today as an integral part of our Constitution prove its worth as a progressive organ of a great republic. From the time of its adoption, one hundred and forty-three years ago, the Constitution of the United States has met the changing needs of our social, economic, and political life. We are still striving toward perfection in democratic govern- ment. The Constitution is at all times showing its ability to adiust itself to the rapid strides in our national development. We as American citivens in a modern world. can be grateful to those men whose amazing vision of America's future provided for a growing constitution to meet the constant demands of changing America. The play is a comedy in three acts of exceptionally high worth. The story concerns the Harrington family of four, Mr. Harrington is a very good-natured, jovial business man who can talk back with force and directness when annoyed. His wife is of the peevish, overbearing type with an air and manner which show some surface culture. The eldest daughter, Grace, is selnsh, cold, and petulant, excepting when she has a purpose in being pleasant. She shares her mother's high social aspirations. Patricia, the youngest daughter, has a likeable and spirited personality, is very unsellish, and has always been dominated hy her sister Grace. She does not. however, give up her love for Tony Anderson, who was once engaged to Grace, and her one desire and chance for happiness is fulfilled when she finds that he is in love with her. Grace, too, is made happy, if such a person can be made happy, by Billy Caldwell of lin' Caldwells. Mr. Harrington. after twenty-five years, Finally asserts his rights in his own home and thereby regains the love and respect of his wife. The play proved a histrionic success because of the capable direction of Miss Bernice Leger and the talent of the cast. I, Ghirlaine Maingot, advise .ill girls, who have a tendency towards raising their voices when calling to their friends or laughing out loud in class, to refrain from doing so, as I have been told it is very unladylikc. I, I,ois Miller, offer the following advice to anyone taking typing: Don't let it be known and you will save yourself a lot of work when Annual season starts. I, Roswell Mills, advise Freshmen boys to cultivate a taste for music as I have done. I, Harvey Moyer, advise XValter Armantage to take up horseback riding as an alternative to running around the track. You would then accomplish the same purpose sitting downfmaybe. I, Mariorie Myers, offer this advice to any girl wishing a private conference with Mr. Vfrighlz Have your boy friend meet you after school and ride home with him. I, La Verna Oberly, would like to suggest to Vera W'elcome that she cultivate a taste for pickles instead of eating so much mustard. W'hat is that old saying about love and pickles? I, Margaret Olmstead, advise Lavena Dennis not to have her boy friend call her up at the school ofiice especially when the faculty is present. I, Phyllis Otto, advise Cecilia Frick to get a nickname that sticks as it is very annoying to have to answer to any old word or phrase. I, Robert Pollard, advise the juniors and Sophomores to follow the example of the Seniors and make the sale of annuals IUUW' in their classes next year. I, Gladys Radcliffe, advise Helen Boheim not to be so bashful as it is apt to give one an inferiority complex. I, Frances Ralph, advise all juniors to think long before accepting the editorship of The Summary. I, Ruth Reed, advise Mary Louise jordan not to do as I did but to do as I should have done in the matter of cultivating a hearty laugh to be used in Student Body assemblies, I, Anna Salchak, advise Alyce W'ilks not to get too chummy with any girl as there have been times when certain people have found it rather difficult to explain why they were both absent the same day. I, Alfonso Sanchez, advise Paul Redfield to take everything into consideration before deciding to take English XII next year. I, Norma Shay, advise the I-reshmen to never allow their hearts to go adrift. I, john Sims, advise the girls to refrain from getting permanents and let their hair go in natural waves like mine. I, Caroline Skidmore, advise the junior girls to go to summer school in order that they may specialize in Study Hall next year. I, Charlotte Skidmore, advise the same thing as we find it very convenient. There are so many more interesting things to do in the Senior year than to study. I, Hardy Smith, advise next year's Student Body Treasurer to come and see me and I will tell him my method of extracting money for Student Body dues from tight people. I, Ruthevelyn Smith, advise Betty Duggan not to become too accomplished at the art of playing base- ball or she might develop a superiority complex-maybe! I, Larencina Solomone, advise Nancy Mandala not to wear heavy old-fashioned clothing on Rube Day unless the weather happens to be cooler than it was this year. I, Hugh Springer, wish to remind Harold johnson that silence is golden and to practise it in future Student Body meetings, I, Iosephine Terranove, advise Bettie Bessent to continue in her art work. I, Lois Townsley, advise more students to try out for the Oratorical Contest next year. I, june W'eddick, advise Lola Seacord not to develop the habit of sewing in Civics class next year as I now see that there is a time and place for everything. At the lodge there were enormous iirefplaces that made us very warm and comf fortahle after the dives in the snow when the tohoggans did not hehave properly. The room was very convenient. having a nice piano, that Rutlievelyn loved to play and a large floor, which was excellent for dancing.
