An equally important consideration was to represent each individual student in the school. In future years you will reminisce and remember the fun and gaiety, as well as the work, which were important parts of your high school careers. This annual is designed to help your memories and perhaps remind you of things pleasant but sometimes forgotten in the rush of crowded years. We sincerely hope that this yearbook will serve as a bridge between your thoughts and the pleasant years which were yours at Thomas Downey High School. your Panel of {fudges More classrooms, more students, expenditures, tax rates, text books—these are but a few of the myriad problems which continuously face the members of the Board of Education of the Modesto City Schools. And it appears that when one problem is solved, another is always around the corner ready to replace it. The elective, noil-salaried hoard members and Superintendent James H. Cor- son worked energetically and earnestly on the job of helping more than 2,300 students and instructors at Thomas Downey High School. Although it is not the usual practice to dedicate a yearbook to two persons, the members of the Shield staff feel that the work of Asineth Mellis and Robert Reeder deserves the double nomination. Many adjectives could he used to describe Mr. Reeder and Miss Mellis. Indus- trious, efficient, and loyal necessarily must head the list. Miss Mellis, in her role of counselor, has been an understanding advisor to the student body in general and the C.S.F. in particular. The students’ respect and admiration for Mr. Reeder increased appreciably with his enthusiastic and tireless leadership in making the student center a reality. We extend a simple hut sincere thanks to both of them. 5 Guiding jCigfits For the past seven years Mr. Olson has been our principal, and much of the credit for the success and high standards that our school has achieved should go to him. His wise leadership and guidance will always be appreciated by the students of Thomas Downey High School. Milford Olson Mr. Diehl assists Mr. Olson and represents him when he is unable to he present at meetings. His duties as Director of Guidance include being responsible for the counseling and guidance program, registration, and class scheduling. Robert Diehl Mrs. Belt, as Dean of Girls, is re- sponsible for the personal and aca- demic counseling of the girls. She is also responsible for general counsel- ing, group counseling, and freshman orientation and works with parents and community groups. Virginia Belt Mr. Reeder is responsible for handling behavior problems of boys as well as general student counseling and programming. As advisor to the Student Council, he assists in the di- rection of student body affairs. 6 Robert Reeder Person to Person Asineth Mellis Counselor Chairman of Scholarship Committee Hazel Gotshall Supervisor of Instruction Counselor Barbara Steele Co-ordinator of Student Body Activities Counselor George Pettygrove Child Welfare and Attendance Counselor Annie Lou Green Counselor Donald Lundberg Counselor 7 Kook Review Standing, life to right: Stan- ley Wilson, Joseph Keuter, Helen Anderson, Albert Jones, Edna Spelts, Richard Weatherington, Ralph Mor- iconi, Greydon Milam, Roy Ottoboni Seated, left to right: Jos- ephine Kimberly, Alberta Keller, Catherine Conwell, Jean Hannah (Department Head) Oversea’s Adventure Left to right: Jean Hannah, Arthur Turner, Peggy Jer- rick (Department Head), Isabel de Firmian 8 Moment of Decision Left to right: Melborn Sim- mons, Alan Goozee, Dorwin Lueth (Department Head), Henry Proctor, Stella Gio- vanetti, Richard De Wolf, Eugene Kraft, Calvin Gro- ver flante Zkat Zune Left to right: Kenneth Far- rell (Department Head ), Gladys Crane, Emery Kim- ball Science Jn Action Left to right: Leslie Juette, James Sherman, Harry Tal- bert, Bruce Johnston, Rus- sell Lawson, Marion Ques- senberry ( Department Head) ?ace Zhe flat ion Standing, left to right: Wil- liam Krueger, Clarence Fau- skin, Elizabeth Angelinoff, Bruce Lepper (Department Head), Dick Ralph, George Pierrou Seated, left to right: Dor- othy Cummins, Kenneth Baldridge 9 Home Show Left to right: Ruenell Krtox, Inez Lemmon (De- partment Head), Ivern Ray, Helen Allison I M ighty Mites Left to right: Barbara Lyghtle, Beverly Ashton, Jean Hallett, Pat Walts, Marilynne Ballinger (De- partment Head), Betty Turner Muscles Malone Back row, left to right: Robert H o e g h, Clarence Fauskin, Keever Jankovich, Bob I j a m s (Department Head), Bob Taylor Front row, left to right: Lyle Iverson, Thomas Dom- itrovich, Carl Heller, Rich- ard Young 10 Jam Report Left to right: Harold Stan- ley (Department Head), Ray Rhodes, Ed Leal, Stan- ley Dcikman World of Art Left to right: Leslie Larson, Ida Gross (Department Head), Josephine Kimberly Rig Payoff Standing, left to right: Le- one Moseley, Harold Hub- bard, Dorothy Brown, Alan Goozee, Floyd Pierson, Mary Etta Downing Seated, left to right: Adc- I laid Chubbuck ( Depart- ment Head), Zola Clark, . Downey's Favorite' Our Center Qrows On October 7, 1957, after 16 months of “red tape,” the Board of Education gave the final “ok.” Cake sales, dances, carnivals, and the like, raised the $17,000 needed to build this $45,000 building. The remainder of this sum was donated by interested townspeople. The purpose of the Center is to provide a meeting place for school clubs and activities, as well as a place for students to spend their spare time. Ours is the first Student Center in the United States that is truly of, for, and by the students. 48 49 -M UcPrt,- “Coke Zim” Reps—Nancy Erickson, Kay Mathis, Kathy Salter, and Scott Luster. Pete Caviness Bob Wagner The Knights started the season with an im- pressive win over the Merced Bears, a team which eventually went on to win its respective league undefeated. Strong points of the game were the line play and the consistent running game offered by the Knights. Boh Jenkins fooled the Bears often with his famous keeper plays. In their second game of the season, the Knights were hogged down by two teams, the Lodi Flames and the Asian hugs. As usual the game was a wonderful one to watch because of the terrific line play by both the Knights and the Flames. The teams played to a nothing to nothing first half. However, in the second half the flu proved too much for the Knights. (Remember ’55) MANTECA VS. DOWNEY 12-0 Woe is me, night of nights, upset of upsets. Once again the Knights were on the short end of the score. This time at the hands of the Manteca Buffaloes. A 160 pound halfback by the name of Bob Silva all but caused an acute case of con- sternation among the ranks of D.H.S. coaches as he ran 76 yards for one T.D. and intercepted a pass returning it 55 yards for the other. 98 EDISON VS. DOWNEY 26-6 Finally the Knights, plus all their men and minus the FLU bug, got on the winning column. The Knights went 60 yards for their first T.D. with Bob Wagner going over from the six. This was the first game at halfback for Bob Jenkins and he proved an even greater threat at this posi- tion. The Knights rolled 364 yards to 142 for the Vikings. Bob Jenkins gained 108 yards in 11 tries for a 9.8 average. A beautiful sight indeed Stalemate Lippert, first and ten M.H.S. didn’t believe us at the rally!! Jenkins, first and goal Here they come! Bob told us we could do it, and didn’t we? No yardage for Ray this time 99 DOWNEY VS. STAGG 20-7 DOWNEY VS. TRACY 28-6 Continuing their win streak, the Knights put together a spotty showing to beat the Stagg Delta Kings, 20-7. With strong first quarter aiul third quarter showings, the Knights simply overpowered the Delta Kings. Stagg put up a tough defense, hut the determined Knights weren’t to he heated this night. Ken Sevick played a whale of a game on defense and earned M.V.P. DOWNEY VS. TURLOCK 0-25 After proving to everyone that they were no pushover, the Tracy Bulldogs folded in the second half and allowed the Knights to run up their biggest score of the season. The Bulldogs really put up a tough defense in the first half to hold the Knights to a single safety. But such things as Boh Austin’s 70 yard run-hack for a T.D. proved too much. DOWNEY VS. FRANKLIN 12-6 For the first time in four outings the Knights met defeat, and they really did it up good, letting the Turlock Houndogs run wild for sixty minutes. Actually there’s not much to he said for the Knights, except that Turlock went on to win the league undefeated. The Knights poorest showing of the year. On Friday, November 15, the Downey Knights got hack on the winning side of the ledger with a 12-6 win over the Franklin Yellowjackets. It seems that the new schools in the league have decided not to he the pushovers that everyone thought that they would he. The Knights had a pretty rought time of it in heating the Yellow- jackets. 100 OAKDALE VS. DOWNEY 12-0 It was Homecoming. 1957, and all the “Old” grads were there in force. Our queen and her attendants looked beautiful, the team—well, the team lost. How- ever, it was not as had as it seems. The Knights went down to defeat at the hands of a fired up Mustang team which had been starving for a win practically all season. The facts of the game were simply that the “Horses” wanted and needed that win more than we did. It marked the end of some fine ballplayers' careers at Downey. Among them were: Boh Jenkins, Gary Ashton, Ken Sevick, Tom Lippert, Pat Mc- Daniels, Boh Wagner. Ken Smith. Pete Caviness, Tom Nelson and more. In the second game of the season, the Bas- kctballcrs made it two in a row by los- ing another game to Ceres by a score of 53-43. It might be mentioned, however, that Ceres went on to win its respec- tive league, the old V.O.L. .c ME - V DOWNEY VS. TURLOCK As was the case in their first practice game, the DOWNEYITES lost their first league game to the Turlock Bulldogs to the tune of 47-34. The Dogs put on a tre- mendous show of hustle and determination in their first win in the new C. C. C. The KNIGHTS suffered bad- ly from inexperience and cold shooting. Tom Mucnch was high point man with 17. DOWNEY VS. EDISON It was their fourth game of the season but the Casabans didn't mind waiting that long for a win just as long as it was a win. The KNIGHTS beat the Vikings, 55-37, in quite impressive fash- ion. Tom Muench had 16 points to help him continue his fight in the league scoring race. DOWNEY vs. STAGG This was one of the Knights poorer show- ings of the season. The Delta Kings, with hopes of a cham- pionship in mind, fought like tigers for their two wins over Downey. Because in both instances it was a do or die situation for them in the league race. Stagg de- feated Downey, 53- 42 and 65-54. DOWNEY vs. MANTECA It may be said of Man- teca that it was no push- over as the D. H. S. Knights found out in the second encounter with the Buffaloes from Man- teca. The Knights had a fairly easy time of it in the first game, winning 69-52. But they had to really fight for their sec- ond win at home. 71-65. DOWNEY vs. TRACY In their first en- counter with the Bull- dogs from Tracy, the Knights w’ere minus the services of their top scorer, Tom Muench. They lost to the championship as- piring Bulldogs. 30- 51. In their second game with the Bull- dogs, t h e Knights won, 61-59, knocking Tracy out of the league race for good. Tom Muench scored 26 points. Downey Vs. Modesto On Tuesday, January 14. in the Modesto High School girls' gymnasium, the night was wintry and wet. The Knights too were cold. Although the Royal Knights put up a stiff battle, M.H.S. was just too hot for them. However, neither the Knights or the Panthers were hot. They both had trouble finding the basket range. After a thrilling finish Downey finally succumbed to the Kittens, 33-30. Tom Muench hurt his hand in the first quarter and only scored 3 points, hut just as the Knights were hurt by Muench's in- jury, they were aided by the fine display of shooting given by junior Tom Thomson, who hit for 10 points. In their second game with the Panthers, the Knights came through with a terrific hustling game capped off with a 17 point performance in the fourth quarter by Muench. But. as was the case in the first game, the Panthers simply wanted the game more. Muench. who had hurt his hand in the previous encounter with the Putty Tats, came through with a 32 point production for the evening. DOWNEY V8. LODI In their first game with the Lodi Flames, the Knights lost to the tune of 59-38. However, in their sec- ond encounter, the Knights improved considerably, giving the Flames a sound licking, 50-45. This was quite a feat be- cause it was accom- plished on the Flames’ home court, while the Lodians were in the thick of the league race. DOWNEY vs. OAKDALE The Knights had a rough time of it in their first encounter with the Mustangs, losing 42-41, without the services of Tom Muench. In the last game of the season the Knights lost a return bill with the Mus- tangs at home, 65-52. Again the Knights were without the services of Tom Muench who had a 102 degree temperature. DOWNEY vs. FRANKLIN Downey played one of its best games in heating the Yellow Jackets at home, 60- 56. In the second game of the schedule, the Knights lost to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 62-44. It was one of the Knights poorest showings of the year. Tom Muench fell be- hind Isaali Simpson in the scoring race. Downey 1957-58 “K” Zeam BACK ROW: Coach C. Fauskins, S. Luster, M. Hardin, B. Although they lost such stalwarts as Rudy Hernando, Jack Griffin and Bill Harader, they retained some fine tennis players in Tom Muench, Greg Merciadis, Bill Davis, Gary Wyckoff, and Dick Gill. Ever since Downey has fielded a tennis team, the Knights have won the championship. For the past few years the team has not lost a match in conference competition. To go even farther they have never allowed a Sac- Joaquin team to score a point in the conference playoffs. During the regular season they have held their top two and sometimes three men out of the match in the interest of fairness to the other team. FRONT ROW: R. Meciadis, B. Davis, M. Cook, G.
