Science Department Ever noticed some of the strange odors which assault the senses as one nears the west wing of the second floor? Anything from the arrival of the frogs for Biology to a disaster in Chem I is possible. Kids have even been seen wandering the halls with yards and yards of ticker tape from a Physics experiment. All this and more is offered by the Science Depart- ment as they expand to meet the needs of all the students. Approximately 55fM9 of the students enrolled at South are taking science courses this year and the Science Department has expanded to its capacity in order to satis- fy the demand. Classes for non-oriented science students all the way to advanced college bound courses are offered in the inter- est of having a broad curriculum, serving as many students as possible. Social Studies Department Social Studies becomes more and more in- teresting each year. The American Studies and World Cultures courses are being updated continually to give the student an interesting and informative course, one which he will not only enjoy but also gain knowledge. The main motive of the World Cultures course is to sharpen the students awareness to the point of views that people of other cultures and lands hold. This is achieved not by dealing just with the particular culture itself, but by going into the things which make up the cul- ture such as religion, economics, etc. This can give the student a better understanding of not only the particular culture but of mankind it- self. This is one department where the context of the courses change through experiments to offer the students a more enjoyable experi- ence. Simulation games and group work have been found not only essential but very prac- tical in this particular department. Although history goes all the way back to the cave men when the first written records were found, the courses are far from being outdated and boring. By knowing of man's past history and your own heredity, it is not difficult to be able to constantly draw analo- gies with past and present history which we are living every day. lt's where its at.
