The game can be won by any player, but must be finished in June, January, or in some rarer cases, in August of the year. STRATEGY: Players gain the lead by outmaneuvering their competitors. However, caution must be exercised in playing with too great a number of tokens, since each token owned by a player must move at its own pace. Moving too many tokens may waste precious energy, and result in general lowering of final score, as well as a case of ulcers. DEAN'S OFFICE. The dean's office is a special place. When landing on the space marked CO TO KALE, the player takes his token as instructed directly to the dean's office. Here he draws a white call slip and chooses a signature (Rasmussen, Rios, Lesniak, or, of course, Mr. Kale). Players may not take one phone call, may not pass the cafe, acid may not collect munchies on the way! , 11 i rAJ 5 ) 0-£., 3sy _cL b c €•- -ft p U1 -AjLGUULuj, ou, cu j ejJj iJn-jctJu ojo-uf Hc si_hC a_ c -ulCxX ' s juuy-T jy-r JU1 d CpOfl , — —OVixXjuJ-oC -9 _ xnX. 0 — Q£ -£CK-b 3uoyC - • CTSCUj ---- w-i ty J Jf -,r k .J. Many have the feeling that they may be Frosh all their lives. They continue to be overwhelmed by the “friendly attitudes of the upperclassmen, awed by the huge building, thrilled by teachers and homework, and wor- shipful of upperclassmen. The Fresh- men muddle through and eventually become Sophomores. Mistake Mr. Pappas for a karate in- structor during first assembly.-Ad- vance to Teachers' section. Mauled by Senior women.-Back 4. 5 After finally overcoming the days of Frosh- hood , most Sophomores take a minute to look around. What they generally see is a lot of unstructured Juniors and Seniors. This starts their little minds thinking. Sophomores have thought of more ingenious ways to dis- appear from study halls than any Frosh. Sophomores also get the privilege to learn of the joys of Speech class. This is a must for them all. As upperclassmen. Juniors receive many more privileges. They can obtain R-P passes if they have the proper amount of credits, study halls exist no longer. What really makes Ju- nior year great is the thought that there's only 1 more year left. There is more responsibility and freedom, mak- ing Junior year the best one yet. One of these is the knowledge that finally they've reached the goal of High School, becoming a Senior. This brings the thought: “Hey, this is the last year! which usually means instant joy. However, when considered twice, it does bring some feel- ings of regret. After all, the four years spent here haven't been all bad. There were great experiences such as the Powder Puff (well, you can't win 'em all). Senior Brunch, and last but not least, the Prom. All this, and more, has made the Senior year the most enjoyable year spent in school. Fall in love with your Anthropol- ogy teacher.-Lose 1 turn while waiting for love to evolve. TIME I M50 guests 01 3qtr. otrojajis M 2down 10 yards to go The varsity team had a strong season with the added spec- taculars of a miracle final sec- onds victory over R-B and a heartbreaking loss to Oak Park in the rainiest homecoming in recent memory. With only one loss, the team had a shot at state, but faced Clenbard West and lost, despite out-rushing them. It was a tough loss, but the team stuck together and fin- ished with an excellent season. The gang gets some glory! IS THE SOPHOMORE GAME! The Sophomore had a mixed but successful season. Led by quarterback Darren Lange, the Sophomores lost some tough ones but swamped teams like Proviso East with the help of the second string bomb squad.” Coach Don Moravec is sending some tough competitors to the varsity in 79. It was the first time soccer was played here. We had a record of 7 wins, 1 loss, and 3 ties. We were in shut-outs 6 times. Since we were not able to play all of our conference teams, we were not included in the conference standings. North will have an even better season. Get in to it, guys! VARSITY GYMNASTICS This was a rebuilding year for the DGN Boys' Varsity Gymnastics Team. Although the top per- formers were Seniors, the bulk of the team was made up of under- classmen. All three Seniors made it to Sectionals, the step before the State Meet. Captain Steve Judge qualified on the Horizontal Bar and Rings, Len VerVers qualified on the Pommel Horse, and MVP Wayne Hargraves qualified on Floor Exercise and Vaulting, setting school records on both events. The high scorers on the team were Junior Dave Murphy and Steve At- kins. Junior Dale Keehan was the number one performer on the Par- allel bars and Rings. Sophomore Daryl Rantis won two tournament medals getting some valuable var- sity experience, which should make him a strong competitor next year. Varsity Gymnastics Row 1 (left to right) Dave Murphy. All of this was ac- complished by a team without a se- nior in its top 9 runners. Sophomore Karen Campbell finished the regular season unbeaten and then ran to 4th in the state. They also lost experienced swimmers, but they gained beginners who helped to build up the team. They were faced with an extended season, but the girls came through again by finishing 3rd in Conference, 1st in districts, and by placing several swimmers in the state meet. The Varsity team also lost a heartbreaker to Oak Park's Huskies in the mists and mud. However, float-building and the inter- class Olympics of champions were great fun. Actually, these late night hours aren't all that bad. Between munchies, music, and goof- ing-off, everything eventually gets done. All staff members have learned the true meaning of the word dead- line. To be a member of this group all you need is a potential to be strange and the ability to put up with the immortal Bandy jokes . Also, Cauldron has acquired a mascot— Bert the Mouse. On May 20, a short play was put together and presented in one day. The piece was cut from The Serpent, and was directed by a teacher from the College of Du Page. THE CRUCIBLE The fall of the year marked the return of Ms. Karen Erickson from a year's study at ISU. Three months before the opening of school, Ms. E. planned the first full length modern tragedy to be performed at North in some time as a student-faculty produc- tion. The students and faculty in the cast soon became family and the result was a highly successful performance. In addition this play is frequently studied in junior level English courses, so that many students got to see their literature come to life . The play's lead role was performed by Mr. Naruszewicz (another lead was played by his wife, Sandy). AND NOW-THE WINNERS The game of Student Life is long and challenging. Through lazy spring days and February blizzards, the contestants plod on, ever onward. All can eventually make it, but there are some, a select minority of contestants “par excellence , who deserve special recognition as they stagger or leap across the North High finish line. Here they are: This is Bruce Blotsky, winner after six years in attendence. who memorized the surface of every desk top in the English Department. Here is Elmer Mugwump, whose tactic for winning the game was to eat teachers alive in class. He was quickly passed through aTl four grades in three weeks. These are the famed Omega quadruplets, shortly after receiving their diplomas, loincd each to the other at the thigh at birth, they never shared answers for a single exam at North! Aldonza Quixote, voted most beautiful by those who daydreamed, and most dreamy by those who were beautiful, reflects upon the next four years away from North. 22S PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS There are rewards for a win, place, or show in the game of Student Life. All contestants get a free diploma, a chance in life outside the game area. However, special awards await those lucky enough to be honored , including: Prize 1: A free enrollment in the lecture scries How to Be a Dean of Students and Love It . Seen here is lecturer. SENIORS SURVEY THE GAME'S END CAULDRON is always intensely curious about tallying the results of each year's contest. Winners and also rans alike are surveyed to find out the answers to the crucial issues of our year at North. We seek answers to questions like What is truth? , What is the meaning of a person's life? and: (out of 173 responding) We discovered that out of all those who wearily seized their diploma in June, almost 100% would attend their class reunion. On the list of faves for the year was the movie Saturday Night Fever, particularly, we understand, cer- tain scenes. The favorite book was The Other Side of Mid- night, which shows that some students seem not to prefer classical works. Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees was a song voted most listened to, perhaps because the title applied to life in Downers Grove between the ages of 14 and 18. The favorite musical group ( . . . and the winner is, in Hollywood ) was Fleetwood Mac ( . . . accepting the award is guitar teacher Irv Lester). The favorite T.V. show was a toss up between Three's Company and Soap , the latter of which did NOT keep it clean. And here are the BIG ones: a tie for the favorite senior teacher: Mr. Steed and Mr. Pappas. They are still friends, although they were seen fighting over the trophy. The best dressed teacher was Ms. Kartholl. The hands down win- ner in the teacher with the worst jokes category was Mr. Bambi, Bandee, Brandy or something like that. But enough bests . What about the year's worst? Look- ing for Mr. Goodbar , which was not about chocolate, was worst movie by far. The song which was retched over the most often due to terminal overplay was You Light Up My Life. Despite the local bopper opinions, Shaun Cassidy's album was voted el bombo! Worst musical was no contest: Gene Simmons's tongue and KISS. Surprisingly (to certain males on the yearbook staff) the worst T.V. shows were Charlie's Angels and Gong Show. It is with sadness that the advisor of our yearbook, who is also an English teacher, found out that the worst book AGAIN THIS YEAR was The Scarlet Letter. AND: do you know that: Only ten percent of those answering owned a backpack, the same figure represents those whose ears are double pierced; over 80% of the students had seen Star Wars at least once AND the faculty member who most reminded them of Darth Vadar was a history teacher whose last name begins with W ; about half the class bought a class ring; half the respond- ing girls had fallen off their platform shoes at least once; a fat 90% said they had never fallen in love with Shaun Cassidy; 90% of the girls planned on going to prom, but only 89% of the boys were (our regrets to the one percent). Finally one guy claimed to have worn out over 17 pair of Adiddas in four years at North. Martha Cich returned in the spring from Malaysia in time to catch the end of the game! A The class legacy is a North High tradition. Students are recognized at Senior Brunch for their unique achieve- ments in the halls, classrooms, athletic fields, and dark corners of good old North High. From the annals of the student game, here are a few legacies as they really turned out (or so someone told us ...): Ed Pedant: voted student with highest honors, is now an assembly line worker for a famous card table and flame-thrower manufacturer. He guest lectures now and then on the subject of Yukon reindeer antler statuary. John Timely and Betty General: were voted the king and queen of the C + grade, and are now married and raising their children in a suburb of Kokomo. He sells insurance coverage to burglar alarm companies. Moose Lockjaw: was voted the most lovable student on the 5-year plan at North, a real teddy-bear and perhaps laziest senior. He now owns the entire state of Nebraska. Alex Nemowitz: North High's one time super-jock and star wingback, now owns a chain of laundromats with washers that give your fortune during the rinse cycle in Boise, Idaho. Lloyd Spirit: pep leader par excellence, is a clown for the Shrine Circus. Lolita Foonman: voted the student actress of the decade now runs an avant garde acting troupe in a local Chicago Gas for Less service station. Bob and Bertha Burnout: were voted North's shadiest students. They now run a boutique which sells leather
