Life in the newsroom isn t always easy. Sometimes it’s frustrating, says editor Tom Hardman. The OMEGA has been going through some growing pains, hoping to be- come a more student-oriented newspaper. We’d like to get more controversial, said Hardman. Edi- torial editor Chris Molinari ex- pressed the wish for more investi- gative reporting.” The OMEGA staff consists of ten edi- tors. The reporters come from the Journalism I class taught by the pa- per's advisor, Mrs. DuChateau. The topics that appear in print are end- less, ranging from the issue of abor- tion to keeping the cafe clean. The staff and their writers follow the news in the school as closely as pos- sible, They deal in facts and save their opinions for the editorial page. Omega Staff. norf ,igh school 4436 main downers grove, ill. 60515 Volume 7, Number 2 October 8. 1976 PSAT scores earn honors for 10 North seniors Ten North High students this fall have been named Semifinalists in the 1977 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students will have an opportunity to con- tinue in the competition for Merit Scholarships to be awarded next spring. The Semifinalists from North are: Diane Cabrera, Fred Hanson, Matthew Harvey, John Hibbeln, Georgina Ma- honey, Mary Lou Mund, Sue Neder, Laura Nevling, James Pitrak, and Kathy Sayers. Scores from these students on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test taken last year are among the highest in Illinois. The total number of Semifinalists named in Illinois is proportional to Illinois' percentage of the nation’s total graduating class. The PSAT is a test taken an- nually by college-bound stu- dents in preparation for the SAT. The Merit Scholarship Program starts with the PSAT by naming Semifinalists from these scores. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation then reviews these successful students by evaluating their school records and by giving a second examination to con- firm their high qualifying scores on the PSAT. Of the over one million students who entered the 1977 Merit Program last year, 15,000 have been named Semifinal- ists. Of these 15,000, 90 per cent are expected to qualify as Finalists and receive Certi- ficates of Merit next Feb- ruary. All of North High’s Semifin- alists have made preliminary college plans. continued on page 3 North National Mcril Semifinalists: back row from left, Laura Nevling, James Pitrak, Sue Neder, Matt Harvey, Fred Hanson;
