August 31, 1970 was the threshold of a new high school year. For some, it was the first, for others, the last. But all were encompassed by an aura of contradictions; excitement, reluctance, anxiety, stability. Despite the students' misgivings and the school's unreadi- ness, the Year began and soon all were caught up in its agonies and its ecstacies. 4

1971 CAULDRON EDITORS: KARLA RICE and DAN LIBERTY DOWNERS GROVE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS VOLUME Lll ACTIVITIES.......16 SPORTS...........50 HONORS...........78 PEOPLE...........98 To the faculty, administration, and student body, particularly the class of 1971: The purpose of a yearbook is difficult to define. Ideally, we feci a yearbook should represent to each student his view of the school, its curriculum, its acti- vities, its people. Vet, this too, is an imperfect de- scription. For how can we two, as editors, or we the staff, numbering fewer than twenty-five, profess to represent the thoughts and feelings of over 2,000 stu- dents? Obviously there are too many students with too varied ideas, circumstances, and viewpoints even to hope for that kind of success. What we have tried to present in the 1971 CAULDRON is the clearest, most accurate and most objective inter- pretation possible of the past year. The yearbook for- mat changes in headline, write-up, and layout style serve not only to make the yearbook more attractive but to draw your attention more closely to what we have said in interpreting the year. It is our admission that, while we hope the 1971 CAULDRON will please all its readers, we seek most the approval of the class of 1971, for this yearbook will be their last. Dan and Karla 3
