The four language clubs of last year were joined together this year to form one club, INTERNATIONAL CLUB, under the spon- sorship of Mr. Gary Elmen, Mr. Richard Hayek, and Miss Holly Harden. Members celebrated various national festivals, heard guest speakers from foreign backgrounds, and learned phrases and folksongs from dif- ferent languages. Chess, a game played in one form or another throughout the civilized world, is one of the few games of pure skill. CHESS CLUB spon- sored by Mr. Elton Martin, held weekly meetings to improve members'playing tech- niques. Participating in monthly matches between west suburban schools, the club concluded its year in a conference tour- nament in May. AFS- Lynn Fandrey, Treasurer; Sumiko Itoh, Japanese Foreign Exchange Student; Mr. Stephen Skin- ner, Sponsor; Terry Johns, Secretary; Linda Gentiluomo, Vice-President; Laura Tykol, President. Helping hands and open doors greeted audi- ences at school and community events. The Ushers were better known as members of PRO BONO PUBLICO. This service club, sponsored by Mr. Alan Hutchison, besides providing the assistance of ushers, presented an award to an Outstanding Senior. Simiko Itoh and Hakan Litsegund gave DGN students a glimpse of the lives of students from other countries. AFS CLUB under the direction of Mr. Stephen Skinner, hosted foreign students and promoted AFS scholar- ship programs. Entertainment for all students was provided at the AFS variety show to raise money for exchange students' travel expenses. BRIDGE CLUB-John Runnels, Debby Leach, Mr. Stanley Steed, NUMISMATICS CLUB-Mr. Robert Katrcin, Sponsor; Dave Nyhlen, Secretary- Sponsor. Absent from picture are Cheryl St. Clair and Tom Magdziarz. Treasurer; Ed Piekarz, Vice-President; Bob Pachter, President. Pupils Specialize, Become Skilled in Diversified Hobbies NUMISMATICS CLUB, dedicated to study- ing the science of coins and metals, was sponsored by Mr. Robert Katrein. Members learned the grading of coins and shared in- terests with experienced collectors. The club's activities included a visit to the annual Chicago Coin Show. The ever-popular sport of snow and sun attracted a growing number of students. SKI CLUB, sponsored by Mr. Alan Hutchi- son brought members together for films, lessons in ski safety rules, dry land instruc- tions, and discussions of ski areas and con- ditions. Members of BRIDGE CLUB, sponsored by Mr. Stanley Steed, learned the complicated skills of bridge. Meetings were held to pro- vide members opportunity to put these skills into practice, giving students a start on their way to masterpoints and championships. 25 SKI CLUB-Barb Wasson, Secretary-Treasurer; Mr. Alan Hutchison.
