MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICS has been termed the “language of science.” As scientific and technological knowledge becomes more complex, the need for men skilled in mathematics increases. The Downers Grove school system has kept up with the demand for mathematical training. A new trend towards more advanced math in junior high school has resulted in a revision in the curriculum offered by the mathematics department. Cap- able eighth graders are studying algebra and are taking plane geometry as fresh- men, qualifying them for enrollment in college-level courses during their senior year. Classes such as solid geometry, trigonometry, second year and college algebra are attracting more students. Students with special aptitudes in math are placed in accelerated classes which offer more advanced mathematical methods and techniques.
