Elmlinger, Ed.D.—University of Nebraska, Director of Certified Personnel. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS. The Co- ordination and supervision of the entire Down- ers Grove school system is greatly aided by the work of three men. These are Dr. Melvin Het- land, Director of Curriculum; Mr. Dean Shin- neman, Business Manager; and Dr. Charles Elmlinger, Personnel Director. Their contri- bution toward continuity in curriculum, sound budgeting, and the employment of capable staffs help Downers maintain one of the finest school systems in the area. BOARD OF EDUCATION The increasing number of students entering DGHS each year creates many of the problems which the Board of Education faces every year. The new language laboratory is one of the steps it has taken to provide adequate educational equipment for the growing student body. SUPERINTENDENT GLENN E. PICKREL M.A. — University of Nebraska D.Ed. — University of Nebraska Superintendent of Schools Superintendent Glenn E. Pickrel’s third year in Downers Grove is marked by completion of work for his D.Ed. degree which was conferred on him by the University of Nebraska in January, 1960. Dr. Pickrel previously received his Master’s degree from the same university. During his administration, Dr. Pickrel has antici- pated and provided for the requirements of two growing school districts. Curricula have been ex- panded, both in the grade schools and in the high school; accelerated classes have been added; and productive experimental programs are in progress. Because of his foresight in educational planning and because of his active participation in village life. Dr. Pickrel has endeared himself to the entire com- munity. Superintendent Pickrel is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, N.E.A., and the American Association of School Administrators. He also belongs to the local chapter of Lions Club and serves on the local Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors. PRINCIPAL CLARENCE W. JOHNSON M.A. — Columbia University Principal Principal Clarence W. Johnson’s twenty-ninth year as revered mentor of DGHS is especially signifi- cant because of the extension and enrichment of the academic program. To implement the broadened cur- riclum, it has been necessary to expand teaching, supervisory, administrative and maintenance staffs; however, in spite of additional responsibility in a rapidly growing school, Mr. Johnson always finds time to talk with students and teachers who seek his counsel. Mr. Johnson received his B.A. degree from North- ern Illinois Teachers’ College, DeKalb; his M.A. de- gree from Columbia University, New York City; and he has also done considerable specialized grad- uate work at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He is a life member of N.E.A. and partici- pates actively in the National Association of High- School Principals. He also belongs to the local chap- ter of Kiwanis and serves as a lay moderator at the Congregational church.

Adams-Dean of Boys; University of Illinois; M.A. The work of the Guidance Department affects every student in the school. The purpose of the department is to give both edu- cational and vocational guidance to students to help them make the best use of their abilities. All students are assigned to counselors who meet with freshman groups once a week and hold private conferences with upperclassmen at least twice a year. The Department administers an extensive program of ability and achievement testing.
