CAULDRON 1960 Downers Grove, Illinois z mm 4 Student life at Downers is a constantly changing mosaic of opinions, fads, and ideas over a solid, well-rounded educational pro- gram. Emphasis in curricular and extra-cur- ricular activities shift with the needs of stu- dents preparing for careers in a complex, highly competitive world. For forty years Cauldron has presented a graphic record of shifting school patterns. This, the forty-first volume of Cauldron, spotlights the trends in opinion and action which are influencing DGHS today. With Sputniks in the sky, atomic reactors on the ground, tranquilizers and vaccines, and thousands of new plastics each year, public attention is focused on science throughout the world. At Downers High, new physics and chemistry labs, completed two years ago, are now filled six periods a day. Science clubs boom, and the science fair is jammed with entries. But Downers students are not. and never have been, dull “grinds.” The “Knockers,” pictured at the left, won popularity but full houses also greeted fine dramatic and musical productions. While some fads spread, others die out. Motor scooters became very popular when a law was passed exempting their drivers from normal licensing requirements. Fourteen-and fifteen-year-olds, unable to drive cars, wel- comed the “scooter law,” while it remained in effect. However, shifting trends have not weak- ened the traditional interest in athletics at Downers. With or without an imminent championship, the cheerleaders are on hand to urge the Trojans on. The purple-clad girls are the heart of DGHS “school spirit.” A broad, well-taught curriculum is. of course, the core of Downers’ student life. Extra-curricular activities reinforce and ex- tend the academic program. The yearbook, in picturing school activity, will reflect trend in both. We of the Cauldron staff hope that the following pages capture the essence of Down- ers Grove High School. The trend of the first forty issues to less formal but more memor- able books has been our guide. We hope that the classes which will hold the Cauldron spoon in the future will be able to find in this edition an accurate portrait of Downers school life in 1959-60. CAULDRON Tm: ACUITY •f W OT t£ OMICpKM fHE CAULDRON toon HONORS The first section of the 1960 Cauldron recognizes the honors won by Downers students for academic and non-academic achieve- ments. The honors are varied, ranging from awards for excellence in dramatics or journalism to citizenship awards to recognition for outstanding performance both on the playing field and in the class- room. Besides the honors listed in this section, more than thirty Illinois State scholarships were awarded to seniors in the spring. Many science projects — winners from the local fair — received awards at the District and State science fairs. These and other honors could not be included because of an early publication dead- line. Top Scholars — This year, for the second time in Downers his- tory four seniors have tied for the honor of valedictorian. Lynne Bradley, Barbara Hughes, Susan Warford, and Arnold Dicke each finished the first seven semesters of high school work with a perfect 4.00 grade average. Martha White is salutatorian. National Merit Finalists — Downers Grove High School this year placed three students in the finals of the Na- tional Merit Scholarship competition. These seniors were Martha White. John Wittekindt, and Arnold Dicke. Martha and Arnold were also semi-finalists for the General Motors National and Na- tional Honor Society Scholarships. Dicke received a General Motors grant and an honorary Merit Scholarship. National Merit Finalists — John Witte- kindt, Martha White. Arnold Dicke. STUDENT HONORS G.A.A.Cup — Since 1928 the Girls’ Ath- letic Association has had the name of one outstanding senior girl engraved on the G A A cup. This year it has chosen to honor Doris Groeneveld for her valuable service on the G A A board and for her personality and leadership qualities which have helped to promote a certain desirable spirit in all physical education activities. Doris, along with Marsha Foster, Jeanne Loewenau, and Nancy Seinwerth, the other nominees, received miniature cups as re- memberances. GAA Cup — Nancy Sein- werth, Marsha Foster, Doris Groeneveld, Jeanne Loe- wenau. Foreign Exchange — Downers students’ knowledge of foreign countries has been extended by foreign exchange program. Last year’s exchange student, Kathy Sax- ton, reported to all the home rooms this year on her experiences in Germany last summer. This summer two students will represent Downers in Europe. Mary Gib- son was chosen to return the visit of Mireille Chausse of Marseilles, France. Mi- reille spent the entire 1959-60 school year at Downers. Dick Lucier was selected as one of ten teenagers from the Chicago area to attend the Y.M.C.A. World Youth Conference in Amsterdam. Foreign Exchange — Mireille Chausse, Kathy Saxton, Mary Gibson, Dick Lucier. D.A.R. — From the three finalists, Gwen Law, Betty Sue Frey, and Joan Keough, Gwen Law was chosen as this year’s D A R “Good Citizen.” She, along with other girls chosen from their senior classes in each of the fifty states, were paid tribute as a Daughter of the American Revolution for their dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. These qualities, her gen- uine regard for the welfare of others, and her strong belief in what is right make Gwen a very deserving winner of this award. DAR — Gwen Law, Joan Keough, Betty Sue Frey. A glance at the preceding section reveals a nationwide trend towards greater emphasis on academics and scholastic standing. Seniors apply- ing to colleges have found a good academic rec- ord to be a necessity for admission; and more and more business firms are checking the high-school transcripts of job applicants. The following pages show DGHS teachers who are doing their part to keep America the best educated nation in the world. Here we see a diploid mega- spore mother cell, which di- vides by meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. SUPERINTENDENT GLENN E. PICKREL M.A. — University of Nebraska D.Ed. — University of Nebraska Superintendent of Schools Superintendent Glenn E. Pickrel’s third year in Downers Grove is marked by completion of work for his D.Ed. degree which was conferred on him by the University of Nebraska in January, 1960. Dr. Pickrel previously received his Master’s degree from the same university. During his administration, Dr. Pickrel has antici- pated and provided for the requirements of two growing school districts. Curricula have been ex- panded, both in the grade schools and in the high school; accelerated classes have been added; and productive experimental programs are in progress. Because of his foresight in educational planning and because of his active participation in village life. Dr. Pickrel has endeared himself to the entire com- munity. Superintendent Pickrel is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, N.E.A., and the American Association of School Administrators. He also belongs to the local chapter of Lions Club and serves on the local Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors. PRINCIPAL CLARENCE W. JOHNSON M.A. — Columbia University Principal Principal Clarence W. Johnson’s twenty-ninth year as revered mentor of DGHS is especially signifi- cant because of the extension and enrichment of the academic program. To implement the broadened cur- riclum, it has been necessary to expand teaching, supervisory, administrative and maintenance staffs; however, in spite of additional responsibility in a rapidly growing school, Mr. Johnson always finds time to talk with students and teachers who seek his counsel. Mr. Johnson received his B.A. degree from North- ern Illinois Teachers’ College, DeKalb; his M.A. de- gree from Columbia University, New York City; and he has also done considerable specialized grad- uate work at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. He is a life member of N.E.A. and partici- pates actively in the National Association of High- School Principals. He also belongs to the local chap- ter of Kiwanis and serves as a lay moderator at the Congregational church. Dr. Melvin J. Hetland, Ed.D.—Columbia University. Director of Curriculum: Dean A. Shinneman. M.S.—Northwestern Univer- sity. Director of Business Affairs; Dr. Charles E. Elmlinger, Ed.D.—University of Nebraska, Director of Certified Personnel. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS. The Co- ordination and supervision of the entire Down- ers Grove school system is greatly aided by the work of three men. These are Dr. Melvin Het- land, Director of Curriculum; Mr. Dean Shin- neman, Business Manager; and Dr. Charles Elmlinger, Personnel Director. Their contri- bution toward continuity in curriculum, sound budgeting, and the employment of capable staffs help Downers maintain one of the finest school systems in the area. BOARD OF EDUCATION The increasing number of students entering DGHS each year creates many of the problems which the Board of Education faces every year. The new language laboratory is one of the steps it has taken to provide adequate educational equipment for the growing student body. New athletic facilities were also inaugurated, and the student exchange program was continued. Mr. Howard H. Koltz; Mrs. Ellsworth Steinhauer; Mr. Charles W. Shocn- berg; Mrs. Charles Wyman; Mr. C. Adams-Dean of Boys; University of Illinois; M.A. The work of the Guidance Department affects every student in the school. The purpose of the department is to give both edu- cational and vocational guidance to students to help them make the best use of their abilities. All students are assigned to counselors who meet with freshman groups once a week and hold private conferences with upperclassmen at least twice a year. The Department administers an extensive program of ability and achievement testing. College Night, Career Day, college visits, and college entrance examination are other services arranged by the Guidance Department. Clara R. Searles-Visiting Counselor; Greeley College; B.A. Wayne T. As a theme for its twenty-fifth year, the High School Paront- Teachers Association chose: Prepare today for a better tomorrow through education. This theme was carried out through various pro- grams, including open house, panel discussions, guest speeches, and joint meetings with other Downers Grove P. T. A. groups. Each of the five meetings was successful in helping to broaden public knowledge and understanding of education. Emphasis was placed on fitting the local educational program to the needs and talents of youth and urging parents to visit school to see what is being done today to prepare for a better tomorrow. OFFICE STAFF Mechanization has become the byword of the Office Staff this year, as everything from program slips to report cards has been changed from hand written to machine typed material. Several staff members have taken specialized courses in the operation of the new machines and their effective use in school business. However, much unmechan- ized routine still remains: phone calls are answered, forgotten lunches returned, missing books recovered, and unending questions answered. Using the most modern methods available, the office staff keeps busy in aiding both students and faculty and in making the high school a smooth-running, business-like organization. MATHEMATICS MATHEMATICS has been termed the “language of science.” As scientific and technological knowledge becomes more complex, the need for men skilled in mathematics increases. The Downers Grove school system has kept up with the demand for mathematical training. A new trend towards more advanced math in junior high school has resulted in a revision in the curriculum offered by the mathematics department. Cap- able eighth graders are studying algebra and are taking plane geometry as fresh- men, qualifying them for enrollment in college-level courses during their senior year. Classes such as solid geometry, trigonometry, second year and college algebra are attracting more students. Students with special aptitudes in math are placed in accelerated classes which offer more advanced mathematical methods and techniques. Two one-act plays, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” adopted and directed by DGHS student Peggy Grimes, and “The Stolen Prince,” were produced. An excerpt from The Matchmaker rounded out the evening’s entertainment. On November 12 and 13, the class of ’60 gave the annual Senior Class Play. A Double Barrelled Dectective Story, adapted from a story by Mark Twain. The presentation was high- lighted by stylized sets and costumes. Rain and Cold weather could not dampen the spirits of student boosters. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY All Aboard! Standing on islands between mud puddles, October 23 and 24, a mass of loyal Trojans helped kick off the 1959 Homecoming at the pep rally and bonfire Friday evening. Once ignited, the fire burned brightly until late that night; but the kindled Trojan spirit glowed through the entire weekend. • Journey to Victory! Even the most stalwart Downers fans were subdued before the second half of the varsity game, as rains drenched the carefully prepared floats, the products of plan- ning and hours of preparation. The day was bleak for both Downers and La Grange gridders: all Trojan and Lion drives bogged down in the muddy mid-field, and the game ended in a score- less tie. Destination Dreamland! The weather did not dampen spirits at the Homecoming Dance. The Music offered by Ted Allan’s band was superb; the decorations, representing the signs of the Zodiac, were fanciful and artistic. Below: Drama Club’s Purple Lion Eater Prepares for the “kill.” A measure of the diversity of interests of Downers’ student body is reflected by the num- ber and variety of extra-curricular Organiza- tions. From music to science to horseback-rid- ing, the clubs differ as do the needs and de- sires of the students. The dismissal bell at 2:41 does not mark the end of the day for a great many students who rush to their lockers, deposit their books, and hurry to a meeting of one of the 34 clubs which DGHS sponsors. Perhaps they go to a lecture on transistors in 315 or work on a film strip in 116. Maybe they meet to plan a horseback ride, or to challenge other schools in debate. They might be discussing modern mathematics or watching a demonstration on the use of cosme- tics. Some take photographs; others edit these for use in the school paper or yearbook. Variety — broadening interests — these are what the clubs and organizations of DGHS sup- ply. 53 DOWNERS GROVE HIGH SCHOOL BAND Flute John Willis Carol Kuhn Don Cummins Diane Rhea Leslie Olds Claudia Cunningham William Vcrr Carol Poindexter Linda Schanilcc Nancy Rehn Lynn Schanilec JoAnn Gustafson Sharon Benson Larry Urbic Steve Peterson Patricia Green Gordon Bunge Richard Cunningham Ronald Freed James Brody Janice Lomax Jane Vancil Wayne Holliday Linda Smithwick Karl Kjeldsen Oboe Alto Clarinet Gayle Hoffmann David Grant Karen Hammond Cindy Wyman Cherry Rith Bass Clarinet Clarinet Dick Peiffer Sally Schubert Judy Peterson Jacqueline DeLaat Alto Saxophone Judy Woolley Robert Bush Nancy Houck Kenneth Schuenemann Roger Kula Karen Peterson Robert Heller Tenor Saxophone John Poling Lester Lenarum David Dill Paul Babiak Baritone Saxophone Richard Whitlock Larry Lekovich Roger Burgess Cornot Lewis Holliday Richard Anderson Brian Bish Chester Balzer Baritone Elizabeth Balzer Paul Link Malvin Plate Gary Johnson Bruce Greenwood Jack Barnes Donna Doughty Bass Harry Rurup Tim Bodden Craig Thorn David Ferguson Bill Brownell David Maack Claude Pearson Dennis Gagne Sandra Steinhauer Porcussion Alan Lacey Eugene Barnes Ted Prescott Kenneth Hall Horn Tom Tizzard Patricia Miller Richard Bollow Mary Groat Drum Major Jeff Grosguth Sally Schubert Trombone Majorettes Marc Bateman Charlotte Hothan James Schanilec Janice Sommer Burr Eichelman Diane Shurn Donald Fahrenkrog Conductor: Mr. Shoemaker DOWNERS GROVE HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA Violin: Mairlyn Melka, Concertmistress; Law- rence Marek, Arnold Dicke, Pamela Baron, Cleora Keeler, Sue Lackey, Donald Flood, Genie Haber- man, Eugene Barnes, Ronald Vavrinek, Patricia Vorhis, Ruth Bristol, Ann Gibson, Maud Obitts, David Boss, Kathleen Tefft, Marian Pedersen, Cyn- thia Parks Viola: David Link, Noreen Miller, David Mich- ael, Jacqueline Nickel, Tom Wilson Cello: Sue Cole, Lila Christiansen, Alice Dicke, Mary Gibson, Kathy Johansen Brass: Fred Cline, Lee Eichmann, Rosemarie Thomas Piano: David Bates, Sue Gabriel Percussion: Barbara Campbell, Sue Gabriel, Ken Hall, Carol Wandschneider Flute: Penelope Lewis, Sue Phillips, Juanita Pederson, Diane Rhea, Joann Gustafson Trumpet: Robert Bozynski, Richard Anderson, Libby Balzer, Melvin Plate Clarinet: Richard Caracello, Steve Johnson, Jean Reinhold, Bob Tweedy, Jean Block, Roger Kula Oboe: Monica Stephenson, Karen Hammond Trombone: Marc Bateman, Burr Eichelman, James Schanilec Tuba: William Brownell French Horn: Patricia Miller, Jeff Grosguth A CAPPELLA CHOIR Bass: Don Bayerle, Bob Bennett, Henry Brant, Dick Cottingham, A1 Danajke, Ralph Euler, John Fletcher, Graham Hunt, Rollin Johnson, Raymond Jette, Bill Kornrumpf, MacDonald Light, John Mac- Kenzie, Richard Rantala, Tom Silberstorf, Bill Vo- dak, Dick Williams, Bob Wilson, Dennis Ziemer. PHYSICAL SCIENCE CLUB Downers students have followed the world-wide trend to greater interest in science. The three-year old Physical Sci- ence Club has become one of the most active and important organizations in the high school. The Club presents movies and speakers, sponsors tours, and organizes an annual science open house for parents and other interested persons. Under construc- tion during the school year are projects which earn recognition at both district and state science fairs. Biology Club officers — Burr Eichelman, Treas.: Stephanie Ogden, Pres.; Nancy Baren- brugge, Sec.; Robert Tyle, V.P. BIOLOGY CLUB INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB Book reviews, movies, discussions, and field trips are part of the Biology Club program. Trips included visits to the International Livestock and Horse Show, a game farm, a fur farm, and Argonne National Lab- oratory. Work on projects for the Junior Academy of Science Fair constitutes a continuing interest at the meetings held regularly during the school year. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB is organ- ized to broaden student understanding of world prob- lems. Regularly held meetings feature speeches and programs of slides followed by group discussions. This year guests from Germany, England and France spoke to the club. A field trip was made to Argonne National Laboratory where the members ate lunch with foreign students. HOMECOMING STEERING COMMITTEE The success of the 1959 Home- coming was a result of the efforts of the 18 members of the Homecom- ing Steering Committee. Truman Phillips and Mary Groat, co-chair- man of this year’s steering group, were chosen in the fall of 1959 by the 1958 Committee. The other com- mittee members were selected in the spring of 1959 by the faculty sponsors. The group was divided into nine sub-committees which, with Mrs. Wood, the sponsor, and Mr. Blatchley, her assistant, han- dled the various facets of planning. This year’s efficient group finished the plans and even part of the dec- orations during the summer. The Committee experimented with un- usual decorations which gave the illusion of a lower ceiling in the new gym where the dance was held. The Homecoming was un- usually successful because of the careful planning of the Committee. Homecoming Steering Committee — Row 1 Nancy Scinwerth. Tournaments were held with many West Suburban Conference and non-conference schools. Intra-Club games were played regularly by the 32 members. The Club library of books on Chess Playing was increased this year. SERVICE CLUB Membership in Sorvice Club is restricted to students who volun- teer to assist teachers and adminis- trators during their free periods by performing clerical tasks. These students render a real service to the school, and at the same time learn details of office and organizational operations. Some of the club mem- bers are chemistry lab assistants, while others relieve at the tele- phone switchboard, do filing or typ- ing, or perform messenger services. An above-average grade record is required of students who apply for admission to this club. Service Club — Row 5 Pete Kempfer. Larry Faulhaber, George Marousek. Frank Dean. Lynn Slepicka. A cabinet of 26 members plan the general monthly meetings. The club is divided into special interest groups which also hold their own meetings once a month. The interest groups are the Travel Club, which sponsors educational trips within a radius of fifty miles; Charm Club, which promotes good grooming and an awareness of fashion; Social Service Club which un- dertakes the collection of food from stu- dents for distribution in the community at Thanksgiving and donates various articles to hospitals and other charitable organiza- tions; Newcomers’ Club, which introduces new students at DGHS to the school and connected activities; and the Matin group, which plans and presents a service for the entire Y-Teens. General group activities included the initiation of members, the Big-Little Sister Tea, Father-Daughter, a Style Show, the Mother-Daughter Tea, and an annual turn-about dance. 64 Travel Club — Leslie McPherson. The weekly meetings of this two-year-old club are composed of informal discussions led by mem- bers. The material read is correlated, so that different members read books about the same period, and may compare their impressions. HI-C Christian fellowship is the object of Hi-C. At in- formal meetings and at special events such as the Billy Graham Wheaton Crusade, members meet and mix with other Christian young people. The organ- ization is open to Christians of any denomination SENIOR MATH CLUB JUNIOR MATH CLUB “Anything new and interesting in math” is the way Mr. Miller, sponsor, describes the domain of the Junior Mathematics Club. The subject material was prepared and presented by various club mem- bers at weekly meetings. The club sponsored two local tournaments of nation-wide math contests, the Mathematical Association Test and the Future Engi- neers of American Test. Four club members, Ernest Frankovitch, Arnold Dicke, Bill Brownell, and Ken Moller, ranked in the upper 10 per cent nationally in the FEAT. The group also was represented by Ernest Frankovitch and John Poling, along with Mr. Paine, the sponsor, at the Regional convention of Mu Alpha Theta National at the Museum of Science and In- dustry, Chicago. COMMERCIAL CLUB F. H. A. Phases of business not covered in the classroom are presented to the members of Commercial Club by speakers from various areas in the business world. Tours of business houses in downtown Chicago are often planned. A picnic and the construction of a prize-winning homecoming float are examples of the club’s social activities. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA chose as their motto, “Toward New Horizons,” thus encom- passing all the purposes of the club. Purposes are well coordinated with activities which included a fashion show of clothes made and modeled by the girls and a series of lectures and demonstrations by Gas Company representatives. Coffee and baked goods were served to teachers after school. F.H.A. Row 1 Row 2 Marie Baker, Publicity Chair- man; Darlene Hickman. V.P.; Patty Collings, Pres.; Beverly Rada. Treas.; Pat Paara. Spe- cial projects this year included making hospital tray favors, selecting books as gifts for children in hos- pitals, and taking orientation trips to the Hinsdale Sanitarium and the Health Museum, both located in Hinsdale. F. T. A. The Future Teachers of America offers its mem- bers opportunities for educational, services, and so- cial activities. The monthly meetings feature panels of students and speakers who are either teachers or administrators. Visiting a school for the handicapped and participating in the State F. T. A. Convention were especially interesting and educational experi- ences for the members. American Education Week was observed by giving each teacher an apple and an hour of service. The club also took an orientation trip to Northwestern University and purchased placemats for the teachers’ lunchroom. F.T.A. STUDENT COUNCIL, in addition to its regular responsibility of pro- viding a link between the faculty and the student body, has taken on the direction of several activities during the year. Again the Council sponsored a program to send a student abroad during the summer. In turn, Downers received Mireille Chausstf, a student from France, for the school year. Money for the exchange program was raised by a donkey basketball game which pitted the senior varsity basketball players against the junior players. Other Council activities included setting up an Honor bulletin board near 202, directing the Freshman Party and the United Fund drive, and sponsoring a turnabout dance on January 9th. Senate, a smaller group within Student Council, met fourth period every day to discuss problems brought up by homeroom representatives and then placed the most important of the problems and questions on the regular Council agenda. Standing — Mrs. Anderson: Mr. Adams. 71 Camera Club Officers — Haines Lockhart, Sec.; Bud Jordan, Pres.; Bob Eggler. V.P.; Mr. Holt, Mr. Leathers, Sponsors. CAMERA CLUB Learning to take better pictures is the purpose of the Camera Club. Members learn about developing, printing and enlarging their own photographs. Mr. Holt and Mr. Leathers, the sponsors, help in demon- strations and discussions of lighting for indoor pic- tures and speeds of film. Field trips to the Brookfield Zoo and Morton’s Arboretum provided color and beauty for member photographers. A. V. A. Amidst films, projectors, screens, record players, and “mikes” are found the A.V.A. boys who play an important part in the special projects department of DGHS. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Kluth, these boys not only show movies to classes and clubs, but also handle record players, tape recorders, micro- phones, sound and lighting equipment in the audi- torium and gym. Projects of challenge and interest are plan- ned for the members. This club worked with ceram- ics, made papier-mache angels, and enameled copper jewelry. The Club, aided by Mrs. Velma Dickson, also produced a cartoon by working directly on a film strip. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Marjorie Wood, Drama Club has become one of the largest organiza- tions in the school, with the total membership of over 400. National Thespians in the club organized special workshops which supervised make-up, costume de- sign and production, scenery, and properties for all of the Club presentations and many of the school productions. The Club productions included the Play Night: “Song of Glory,” presented at Christmas time; and “A Lovely Miracle” given at the district speech contest in February. Many of the Drama Club mem- bers attended the National Thespian Convention at Oak Lawn, Illinois, and several of the Thespian mem- bers participated in a National convention in Indiana at the end of the spring semester. In their regular meetings, bull sessions and trouble-shooting talks are held, at which the twenty members discuss their in- dividual layouts at home. Club members also use their own equipment on the club-owned board layout at school. THE BIT AND SPUR CLUB is made up of stu- dents who have an interest in horses and riding. They meet regularly to duscuss riding equipment, riding clothes and equestrian experiences. Their most im- portant activities were their rides at Milnes Stables and a trip to the International Horse Show in Chi- cago. 74 Bit and Spur Club Members — Janice Newsted, Sue Ahalt. PEP CLUB No one who attends a Downers home basketball game can fail to see, or at least hear, the white-shirt- ed, white-bloused Pep Club section. Along with boosting DGHS morale, Pep Club sponsored the sale of Trojan teddies, the auction of a basketball auto- graphed by Downers players, and Trojan Twirl, the Pep-D-Club dance. D CLUB The white-sweatered athletes on duty at the doors of the gym at basketball games are representa- tives of the Downors Loitormen's Club. These mem- bers also work with the Boosters’ Club to promote interests of the athletic department. The purpose of the club is to encourage good sportsmanship and pro- mote harmonious balance among major and minor sports. Traditional events include the “D” Club-Pep Club dance held late in December, 1959 and formal initiation of new members in January, 1960. “D” Club Row 1 Bruce Sloier, Mike Cline, Andy Weisc, Truman Phillips, Dick Perkins, Bill Miller, Jim Han- son, Bill Vodak, Bill Parz, Wayne Stack. The Aids also made white satin bookmarks as faculty Christmas gifts. The Library Club is divided into four service areas: 1) circulation desk crew; 2) reference desk workers; 3) attendance door staff; 4) office aids. POM POM SQUAD THE POM POM SQUAD has become a school tradition in the last four years. Membership was passed on to the present squad by the girls in the class of ’59 who originated the group in their sopho- more year. In turn, this year’s squad will select next year’s squad. This year the Pom Pom girls have prepared their own routines under the direction of co-captains Emily Senderling and Cindy Wyman and have performed at the Homecoming football game, basketball games and the Youth Center Carnival. Cathy Carey, Mary Lou Blessent, Linda Poindexter. School spirit is personified in the cheerleaders. The 1959-60 squad, coached by Mrs. Joan Dale, tried many new ideas and experiments. New ideas for pep rallies — such as the “Mat Dillan” skit used this year — were sug- gested at a cheerleading clinic in November headed by Miss Pauline Hess, cheerleader coach at Michigan State. Both the varsity and the frosh-soph crew experimented with six and eight cheerleaders at a game to determine the more effective number. Some of the girls worked with the junior high cheerleaders. The varsity and sub-varsity debaters traveled with Mr. Olney, their coach, to debate with schools in the Chicago area, as well as participating in the state contest. Most varsity competition was in the Metropolitan Debate Union. A tournament at Augustana College was the high point of the debate season. The debaters made an excellent record in more than fifty varsity interscholastic matches. Varsity Debaters Row 1 Burr Eichelman, Wayne Ry- back, Glenn Runyan, John Po- ling. For the individual, athletics is a means of combined expression of the strength and agility of the body with swift mental evalu- ation of situations. The perfect athlete must supplement his muscle-power with quick thinking and co-ordination. Athletics on a team level produces more than a strong body, however. All coaches stress the axiom: A team must work together. The athlete must be able to coordinate his effort with that of h s teammates if the team is to win. To succeed in any form of sports the athlete must establish and follow self-dis- cipline on and off the field. He must cultivate that intangible quality — desire. A fine body, a quick mind, team spirit and desire characterize the fine athlete. The last mile . . . Sticky fingers! 85 Downers break around the end. Although Downers began the season by handing Naperville a sound 30 to 0 whipping on a dry field, a second quarter deluge against Riverside-Brookfield helped the Bulldogs reverse a 15-point Trojan advantage, and muddy conditions held the Trojans to two wins, four losses, and one tie in the West Suburban Conference, good for only a fifth place berth. Most disappointing was the scoreless tie against cellar-dwelling LaGrange on Homecoming Weekend, played on a field so mire that offense could mount a sustained drive. Named to the W.S.C. all-Conference squad were Jim Hansen, Gene Smith, and Danny Jacobozzi. Tackle Andy Weise was selected by the coaches to receive the team Most Valuable Player Award. FROSH-SOPH FOOTBALL Coached by Robert Fletcher for the first year, the frosh-soph gridmen finished with an overall season’s record of three wins and five loses. Opening the season with a non-conference loss to Naperville, the Ponies bounced back to win their first conference game from Riverside-Brookfield by the score of 6-0. A four-game losing streak, including a 6-0 heart- breaker to Lyons at Homecoming set the stage for a fast season’s finish. Coming from behind to defeat Glenbard West at their Homecoming 13-7. the Ponies then blitzed Arlington 20-6 in the season’s finale. 88 Ponies move down field. Again coached by Roger Lofgren, the varsity harriers this year fielded a much improved team. Although going winless, the thin clads came within one point, 31-32, of winning at York and placed a runner in the top 15 at both the district and the conference meet. Junior Bill Bulat, who was chosen most-valuable runner at the end of the season, finish- ed 13 at the conference meet and placed 12 at the district or state qualifying meet. Judging from the frosh-soph record, the future looks considerably brighter for the Trojan cross country squads. Under the coaching of Roger Lof- gren for the second year, the frosh-soph harriers fin- ished fifth in the conference. They won three dual meets while losing four, and placed fifth in the con- ference meet with 99 points. The cagers often ran up first half leads kgainst powerful rivals, but were unable to keep the pace. Downers finished seventh in the WSC with a four-win, ten-loss record. The Trojans were led by highscoring forward Bill Miller, whose season’s point total, third high in the league, earned him a berth on the All-Conference squad. Miller and Truman Phillips the only returning lettermen, were joined by various combi- nations of seniors, juniors and sophomores Dick Perkins, Rich Coffin, and Dave Wot- ring saw the most action. Mgr. 92 BASKETBALL The frosh-soph Ponies, coached by Jim Lind for the third year, were hampered by a lack of height and experience. Without any returning numeral winners, the inexperienced squad over many of their early season troubles and finished the-season a much improved team. After losing two mainstays, Jim Elza, who moved to Minnesota, and Bill Duffy, who was moved up to the varsity team, the majority of the playing was done by Herb Fink, Bill Gall, Bill Gartin, Steve Brubaker, Tom Brodine, and Mike McAllister. The ceiling is the limit! Cold weather was the curse of the 1959 Trojan baseball team. Frigid temperatures forced the postponement of many of the early-season games. The holdover games crowded the schedule at the end of the year. Although the Varsity finished below second place for the first time since Guy Wellman became coach, the standings do not show the entire picture. The Trojans began the season auspiciously with a victory against La Grange, the eventual league runner-up. Then Downers’ luck turned, as the Trojans dropped six conference dicisions by one run. Among these were two losses to the champion Maine Blue Demons. Ken Lutgens threw a one-hitter in the latter of these, but lost 1 to 0. Lutgens, Bruce Gibson, Jim McAllister, and junior Gene Smith were named to the All-West Suburban Conference squad. Gibson, the first base- man, received the team’s Most Valuable Player Award. The Ponies record of three wins and four losses was good for sixth place in the West Subur- ban Conference. The top frosh-soph pitchers were Fred Mundinger and Bill Gurican. whose three- hit hurling and clutch home run won one of the Ponies most exciting duels, a 3 to 2 victory over Main. Catcher Wynn Miller led the team in hit- ting. Horn Martinek was strong with the bat. while providing good defense at second base. 94 He really didn't want it anyway! Wrestling is back on firm footing at Downers Grove. This fact is evident from the improvement shown by the record of this year’s squad over that of the 1959-60 crew. Last year’s squad, won only one match in conference competition. In 1959-60 a 3- win, 4-loss league record was enhanced by 6 wins and 2 losses against non-conference foes. Seven Downers wrestlers ranked high enough at the district matches to be advanced to the sectionals. They were: Jack Bochar (195 lbs.), Ed Briner (103 lbs.), John Tamburrino (112 lbs.), Dave Kerchner (120 lbs.), Alan Mejdrich (127 lbs.); Bruce Bish (133 lbs.), and Dick Trumbull (165 lbs.). Captain Wayne Stack, the only Trojan elected to the All-Conference team, injured his wrist and was unable to wrestle at the District Meet. FROSH-SOPH WRESTLING Downers’ first conference championship of 1959-60 was won by Coach Chuck Novotny’s frosh-soph wrestlers. The unbeaten underclass- men posted fifteen consecutive victories in their drive to the first wrestling crown DGHS has held since it recommended the sport two years ago. The squad was captained by Barry Ganek. TRACK Utilizing their new indoor track facilities beginning in January, Coach Jim Stahl’s thinclads produced a sea- sonal record that was both disappointing and encouraging. The varsity squad had the least favorable record of the teams. Although the upperclassmen came up with numerous fine individual performances, it remained for most valuable runner Dave Stormer to bring home the honors. Stormer, a senior hurdler, became the only Trojan to qualify for the state meet where he captured fourth place in the high hurdles. The freshman and frosh-spoh squads, exhibiting well- balanced teams, raised hopes for improved future records. Form Varsity Track Team — _ Row 1 Brian Maxon. Rodney Padik, Dennis Wood. Jim Robbins. The Trojan Golfers, under Coach Dick Carstens, finished another successful season with an overall record of six wins and seven losses. The varsity squad, after winning their district meet and placing eleventh in the state meet, returned to capture 3rd place in the con- ference meet and second place in the conference standings. Leading the varsity linksmen was Bud Barnhart, who finished 1st in the dis- trict meet, sixteenth in the state meet, and 3rd in the conference meet. The frosh-soph team did even better. They won ten meets while losing their only match to Hinsdale, and finished first in the conference standings. Ricky Van Horne was medalist at the frosh-soph con- ference meet. The Frosh-Soph Tennis Team finished the season with the best record that a D.G.H.S. tennis team has earned in a good many years. Winning 16 points in dual meets and 2 in the conference tournament, our team placed third in the WSC. The racket-men trium- phed in five of the dual meets, losing only to Hinsdale and LaGrange. who eventually tied for the champion- ship. Varsity Tennis, one of the brightest, least expected surprises in the Downers spring sports picture in 1959 was the upset victory of the Trojan doubles team of Bob Jucovis and Ken Powell in the West Suburban Con- ference meet. The unseeded duo, which met both first- seeded Hinsdale and the second-ranked Glenbard teams in winning the conference title, made many people take another look at Downers’ tennis squad. Although tennis at Downers Grove is still in the first stages of Coach Steve Oracko’s rejuvenation pro- gram, Jucovics and Powell’s victory pointed to the po- tential to be developed at Downers. But the classes themselves remain prac- tically unchanged over the years. Freshmen will always be freshmen and seniors will always act like “the living gods of DGHS.” The following section pictures the students of Downers High. Among them are athletes and scholars, artists and scientists, leaders and fol- lowers. The ideas, actions, and opinions of each are woven together to form what is called stu- dent life at Downers Grove. Junior class FLING! 101 That can’t bo mo! SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS What will become of the Class of 1960 after graduation? No one can be sure, but statistics from recent classes may give an indication of the future. If the “sixties” follow the trends of these classes, forty-five percent will enter college next September. Many will continue their education at the schools in Illinois and neighboring states, but some will go as far as New England or California. Forty per cent will start earning their living before next fall. About five per cent will join the armed forces. And before another class has graduated, wedding bells will sound for about twenty-five “sixties.” OFFICERS President Bill Miller Vice President Gwen Law Secretary ............ GLENN 145 1960 JUNIORS “Enthusiastic” might be the best adjective to apply to the class of ’61, for this year’s Juniors have channeled an abundance of energy into their participation in sports, clubs, publications and musical or- ganizations, as well as in classroom activities. The Juniors have worked well individually by maintaining a high honor roll percentage and as a class by sponsoring a very suc- cessful dance. They have assumed responsibility by electing capable class officers and they have shown their school spirit by their regular attendance at school events. In ex- panding their activities and increas- ing their knowledge, the Juniors are preparing to manage the tasks that will be placed before them as Seniors. The Junior class officers were chosen on October 12th last year and since then they have di- rected class sponsored activities and have represented the Juniors at various school functions. With a wider choice of academic subjects and more opportunity in extracurricular activities, the soph- omore can explore his interests. He may learn to drive a car from the school program, study one of the new courses offered, such as Psy- chology or Government, and take more detailed classes of the re- quired basics. Social life of the Sophomores started with the building of their third prize float, a Kangaroo with the motto, “Get the Jump of L.T.” Sophomores had some original acts in Carnival, and they closed the year with their dance in May.
