V v -C v V A Associate Editor hi 1377, Downers (7rove Community High School was established. The student body was accommodated in a two room structure of dark red brick which is in use today as a part of Lincoln School, housing elementary pupils. In 1394, because of a shortage of space, the school was moved to the north side building which is now a part of Washington School. In 1913, two more rooms were added to the original Lincoln building and the high school student body of III was returned to that location. In 1923, the school was moved to the newly-erected buff brick building on Forest Avenue. At this time there were 350 students enrolled. In 1936, with a student body of 925, an addition to the west end of the first floor was erected which included 14 classrooms and an instrumental music room. Shortly after, in 1933, a new gymnasium and dressing rooms were erected at the west end of the building. In 1955, a two-story west addition was joined to the gymnasium and the original building. 'This housed a new library over the music room, with three classrooms and a vocal music room on the third floor. The total enroll- ment was then 1500. Today 2025 students and 91 faculty members of Downers drove Com- munity High School are accommodated in the remodeled Forest Avenue building and large Main Street addition completed in 1953, with classroom and administration space, a new boys' gymnasium, and a new auditorium. The photographs on this and the opposite page are a pictorial record of the growth of Downers Grove Community High School. ♦ ♦ ♦ THE YEAR OPENED WITH pieasant surprises. PICKREL M A—University of Nebraska Superintendent of Schools Superintendent of Schools Glenn E. Pickrel, in his two years in the community, has proved himself not only an able administrator, but also a man with a high degree of integrity. Prior to coming to Downers Grove, Mr. Pickrel was Superintendent of the West Side Community Schools, a suburban district of Omaha. Nebraska. He was active in many civic groups of Omaha, and he taught school admin- istration courses at the University of Omaha and at the University of Nebraska. A member of Phi Delta Kappa, the National Educa- tion Association, and the American Association of School Administrators, Mr. Pickrel has improved the curriculum in Downers Grove, added more accelerated classes, and promoted a successful referendum which improved the teachers' salary schedule. Kind and considerate, with a dry sense of humor, Mr. Pickrel has the ability to work in harmony with others and shows respect for the personal dignity of all. The Pickrel Family: Douglas. Mr Pick- rel. Mrs Pickrel Beth', Paul, and Sheila PRINCIPAL CLARENCE W. JOHNSON M.A.—Columbia University Principal Students and faculty alike pay tribute to Mr. Clarence Johnson for the uniformly high standards and progres- sive policies at DCHS. In the thirty-four years he has been associated with our schools, first as a teacher, and since 1931 as principal of the high school, he has established an enviable record as a capable and efficient school administrator. Mr. Johnson directs the high-school administrative staff, supervises the teaching staff, works closely with the department heads to maintain professional standards and an enriched curriculum; and yet, in spite of a heavy schedule, he always finds time to talk with students and teachers who seek his counsel or advice. Needless to say. the school and the community are proud of Mr. Johnson's active participation in state and national educational organizations and, at the same time, appreciate his generous service to civic community life. Mr. Johnson and his wife. Myrtle Charlotte Andersen Herbert L. Adams M.A.—Northwestern M.A.—University of Illinois Assistant Principal and Dean of Girls Dean of Boys ADMINISTRATIVE COUNSELORS The DCHS administrative counselors deserve not only recognition but admiration from the students, teachers, and parents of Downers Grove. It is they who must co- ordinate all of the functions of the academic day and who are responsible for the counseling of students, the conducting of the educational testing program, and the acquainting of future students with DGHS. The administrative counselors arc an indispensable part of the educational system at DGHS and are a credit to the community as well as to the school. Wayne T. Guthrie M.S.—University of Illinois Director of Guidance and Testing Clara R. Searles B.A.—Greeley College Visiting Counselor Dr. Melvin J. Hetland Ed.D.—Columbia Director of Curriculum Dean A. Shinneman M.S.—Northwestern Director of Business Affairs Dr. Charles E. Elmlinger Ed.D.—University of Nebraska Director of Certified Personnel ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS Three names recognized readily by the students and faculty of DCHS arc those of Dr. Melvin Hetland, Dr. Charles Elmlinger, and Mr. Dean Shinneman. Through their outstanding contributions in their respective posi- tions as Curriculum Director, Personnel Director, and Business Manager, the high caliber of the Downers Crove educational system is maintained. BOARD OF EDUCATION Under the leadership of Chairman Donn Armstrong, the Board of Education completed another year of com- petent school management. The construction of the new building and the inauguration of a new curriculum program, including the addition of many new advanced courses, were among the projects undertaken by the Board. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The English Department has a manifold mission in the over all development of high school students. It plays a substantial role in imparting those values epito- mized in the phrase, a liberal education. It tries to help every student grow in his ability to read discriminat- ingly, to speak and write effectively, to listen intelli- gently, and to utilize sources competently: it tries to develop in him a taste for fine literature and a distaste for what is cheap and tawdry; and it tries to help him conceive of the great writings, past and present, as synthesizing forces which combine all learning into one comprehensible pattern. Illustrative of the increasing importance of mathe- matics is the large percentage of students who take more than the required year of Algebra I or General Mathe- matics. The Math department, headed by Mr. Edward Paine, provides for the gifted student by including accelerated classes in its curriculum. In a program inaugurated this year, select groups of mathematically gifted eighth grad- ers at Puffer. Herrick, and O'Neill junior high schools were offered Algebra I. During their high school years, these students will be offered additional advanced courses not included in the present curriculum. Many students in this accelerated program will go directly into advanced courses in college, and some will receive college credit for this high school work. On March 5. about 100 math students took part in the Annual Mathematical Contest. The three highest scores from DGHS were entered in nation-wide competition. MR. JULIAN M. TAYLO— Athletic Director. SOCIAL SCIENCE The organization of different economics and govern- ments, the relationship of man to his environment, the struggle for power among nations—all these arc a part of social science. World and American history acquaint students with the rise and fall of ancient and contemporary civiliza- tions and the development of the American cultural heri- tage. The study of the Illinois and federal constitutions takes place in government classes. Economic difficulties and world problems are discussed in the international relations course, and students analyze man and his sur- roundings in sociology classes. The social science courses attempt to promote a better adjusted attitude toward life and its problems. Seated MR. ALDO VESPASIAN CAROZZA. University of Illinois. M A . 3 years; MISS LUELLA E. PAUL. FINE ARTS FOREIGN LANGUAGE Appreciation as well as techniques and performance is emphasized by the Fine Arts Department in band, orchestra, chorus, and art. Art students enter contests, help paint scenery for plays, and display their handiwork in school. More and better musical concerts have been made possible by the completion of the new auditorium. The ratings of DCHS musicians in the State Music Contest were traditionally high this year. The DCHS Music Department was host to the West Suburban Conference Music Festival held on May 4. On the underclass level, personal typing, general business, and accounting are offered as a basis for further business training. To upper- classmen, Typing I, stenography, economics, office practice, advanced accounting, and commercial law arc offered. The Business Department offers a well rounded variety of courses aimed at preparing students to enter the business world with ease and self-confidence. LIBRARY Reading center, information and fact finding service, and teaching agency—this is the threefold purpose of the library. To the librarians falls the responsibility of effi- ciently maintaining the 12,000 books and 138 periodicals to be found on the library shelves. Supplementing these collections are teaching aids such as pictures, career pamphlets, film strips, recordings, and college bulletins. The library is a beautiful, well arranged area where students may read and do academic research during their free periods and before and after school. OFFICE STAFF Answering telephones, keeping attendance records, taking dictation, counting money—these are just a few of the dozens of tasks executed daily by the members of the unusually efficient office staff at DCHS. Through their able hands pass program cards, mimeograph stencils, lost fountain pens, transfer slips, locker assignments, college applications, room keys, dollar bills, and four cent stamps. As is the case in any large business, the school could not function smoothly without the office staff. This year, in addition to the traditional junior first aid and freshman health courses, a sophomore course in classroom driver education has been added to the physical education curriculum. This indoor training, extending from three to six weeks, is given by physical education teachers to both boys and girls. After completing the indoor course and receiving a State instruction permit, behind-thc-whccl instruction is offered in the department's three dual-control training automobiles by a staff of well-trained instructors headed by Mr. Frank Riddlcsbcrgcr. The reward for ten weeks of hard work spent in learning to drive is the coveted driver's license. Charlotte J. Hitzeman R.N.—Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing School Nurse 28 OFFICE STAFF MRS. Mr Genn Oincy Downers Grove debate squads have competed in tournament, invitational, and state contests, taking part in approximately 170 inter-scholastic debates this year. In addition to participation in contest debates, members of both varsity and sub-varsity squads have appeared before school and community groups to discuss American education problems. The national debate topic for this year is “Resolved, that the United States should adopt the essential fea- tures of the British educational system. At the close of the debating season, the varsity team was ranked twelfth out of the sixteen Chicago area teams competing in the Metropolitan Debate Union. In addi- tion to these tournament debates, Downers Grove was well represented by both varsity and sub-varsity squads at twelve invitational tournaments. Team members Ken Pilecek and John Poling received speakers medals at the Blue Island Invitational tournament. The varsity squad ended the year by placing seventh out of twenty-four schools participating in a series of debates in conjunction with the State Speech Contest. 39 ■ne Patonq l Beivscf. To many students it means seeing it all the pictures of them- selves have turned out well, what surprising features have been presented, and how the year has been sum- marized. To the staff members, however, the yearbook means something more. Within the blue and white covers of this, the fortieth edition of the CAULDRON, arc packed many episodes which are not printed or pictured. There are the behind- the-scenes conferences in the publications office during the spring and summer at which time the staff chose the color and design of the book, and became acquainted with the advisors, Mrs. Lois C. Dahl and Mr. Ccorgc B. Pappas. There is the busy click of typewriters, the shifting of picture schedules, the last minute preparations for sending the book to press, and a host of other in- tangibles that belong only to the staff, editors, and advisors. Now that the CAULDRON has finally been distrib- uted, the staff members can breathe a collective sigh of relief—for the completed yearbook has been well worth the hard work spent in producing it. Shoemaker, have distinguished them- selves nationally as well as locally. Mr. Shoemaker was selected as one of the top band directors in Illinois by First Chair of America, a national yearbook published to honor musical organizations and their directors. The band was also selected for the Illinois section of that book. During the course of the school year, the concert and marching bands provided music at athletic events, par- ticipated in school assemblies, took part in the annual Christmas Concert, and entered the state music contest held this year at Elmhurst, where they won traditionally high honors. At the first of their two concerts, the band was for- tunate in having as a guest conductor, Lt. Col. William F. Santelman, retired musical director of the United States Marine Band, the official band of the President. This famous band was once directed by the immortal March King, John Philip Sousa. 46 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Row 1: Linda Sallemi. Marsha Makamul. The A Cappella Choir was rewarded for long hours and tedious work spent on the operetta Brigadoon by the superb production on February 17 and 18. Directed by Miss Barbara Barnes, the production exhibited ex- cellent showmanship and artful stage settings. The choir also participated in the West Suburban Festival Chorus under the direction of Miss Margaret Hillis, director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chorus. The spring concert was presented on two nights, as was the Christ- mas concert, so that everyone enrolled in vocal music could participate. The second night was devoted to a variety show presented by the junior and senior glee clubs. By presenting these concerts and participating in the state music contest, members of the vocal music depart- ment have experienced a rich and rewarding year. A CAPPELLA CHOIR Row I: Linda Foster. Freshman Attendant After months of careful preparation by the Home- coming Steering Committee under the direction of Mr. William Corr. the big weekend was ushered in by a bonfire, pep rally, and snake dance. The pep and en- thusiasm shown by the students and faculty alike spurred the Trojans on to a triumphant victory over Clenbard. Between the halves of the varsity game the judges awarded first prize to the freshman class for their win- ning float, We Panda Win. The parade included many elaborate floats which constituted many days and nights of hard work. Beneath the star-studded mast of a sunken ship, John Marker and Sue Curry reigned as king and queen of the 1958 Homecoming Dance. Couples danced in the deep purple atmosphere of an enchanted underwater world to the music of Johnny Marlowe's orchestra. The dance was the perfect finale to a memorable homecoming weekend. The purpose of this club is to provide its members with a variety of experiences in scientific fields, for future application on the job or in school. Although members worked on individual projects which were displayed at Chicago area science fairs, the main club project was the construction and operation of a ray cabinet which illustrated the effects of radiation. The divisions of the club arc supervised by instructors of the physics and chemistry departments. Providing an outlet for students interested in the biological sciences, Biology Club encouraged members to delve more deeply into the intricacies of zoology and botany. This year the club made several field trips including visits to the Hinsdale Health museum and the Interna- tional Livestock and Horse Show. Members were also encouraged by their sponsor, Miss Louise Killie, to con- centrate on projects in their specific fields of interest. SERVICE CLUB LIBRARY AIDES Service Club is different from other school organiza tions in that it holds no meetings, elects no officers, and collects no dues. The Service Club is, nevertheless, one of the most efficient clubs in the school. One division assists counselors by collecting attendance slips and delivering counselors' requests. Another division is made up of the hall monitors, who arc on duty throughout the school day; and a third group are lab assistants, who help in the physics and chemistry classes. This year there are twenty-six Library Aides who assist the three librarians in the new library. There are many jobs that these girls perform—checking library passes, recording loan books, issuing magazines, mending and repairing books, and preparing books to be put on shelves. Strengthened through four years of close co-operation in all phases of high school life, the bond between the seniors and their alma mater can never be broken. In the fields of academics, the fine arts, athletics, and social events, we have achieved recognition worthy of our school. The 1958 Homecoming on October 18 officially began our work as seniors. We planned and executed the Winter Formal, Silver Silhouettes, which was held at the Nine- teenth Century Club in Oak Park on January 2. In February we performed the operetta Briga- doon,” and concluded our social activities with a memorable Senior Prom. HAMMETT The senior class suffered a great loss with the death of John Hammett on July 5. 1958. The remembrances we all have of John are varied: some think of a football player, one of the strongest boys in school; some think of a conscientious, considerate son; some think of a student who spilled ink on a physics teacher's gradebook; and some think of the musician with the record col- lection. who was always glad to talk about Bix Beiderbecke. All of these facets comprised the per- sonality we knew as John, a very real part of the class of 1959. BARBARA J. STICH With the death of Barbara Stich on January 10. 1959. the senior class suffered another tragic loss. During her high-school career, Barbara was a member of Y-Teens and was also an active participant in Bit and Spur and FHA. Barbara is well remembered by her friends as a girl with a radiant smile and efferves- cent personality, another real part of the class of 1959. 28 THE CLASS Friendliness, boundless energy, and school spirit are the main characteristics of the junior class. In athletics, they have distributed their talents gener- ously both on the field and in the stands. Con- sistently well-represented on the honor roll, the juniors further demonstrated their scholastic ability on the University of Illinois aptitude tests. The class election provided the juniors with able leaders. Successful events under the guidance of Miss Fronk, Miss Greenlee, and Mr. Corr included the Junior Dance, participation in Career Day and Col- lege Night, and the construction of the junior class Homecoming float. D.G. V-Day. One of the biggest events of the year for the juniors was the selection of their class rings. THE OFFICERS President Dick Perkins, a member of Student Council as well as an active participant in football, basketball, and baseball, has maintained a 6 aver- age through his three years at DGHS. Vice President Bill Miller, while preserving an A- grade average, has been active in the basketball and baseball teams and Student Council. Secretary Joan Keough has been active in Leader's Club, GAA. Student Senate, the Honor Pep group, and Y-Tecns, where she is vice presi- dent; and has maintained a B grade average. Treasurer Lee Plate, who was elected as the result of a write-in vote, is an active member of band and Spanish Club, and has also maintained a B grade average. 129 Juniors ABBOTT. RON ADKINS. Treasurer; Chuck Hitzeman. Vice-President. Sophomores THE CLASS Between the carefree year as freshmen and the years in which thoughts turn toward college is that pleasant interim, the sophomore year. This is the year that students may learn to drive a car through school instruction and become even more active in clubs and organizations. One of the highlights of the year for the sophomores was their annual class party on November 1, based on a popular theme, that of ‘‘Around the World. Eager to add to the social life at DCHS. the sophomores sponsored the sock hop. Shoeless Shambles. on March 7, at which the sophomore combo, The Jesters, supplied the music. THE OFFICERS President Dick Lucier has consistently earned A grades while serving as president of the frosh- soph division of Hi-Y and participating in tennis competition. Vice President Chuck Hitzeman participated in Student Council. German Club. Hi-Y board, bas- ketball. and track, and upheld a B average during the year.
