We Gaze ai' Foreign Ports Miss Lynnette O,lr., who is a new crew member this year on our faculty, teaches French, Spanish and ninth grade English. French is also new to our curriculum. However, the gobs of D.H.S. seemed to be attracted by this lithe miss's auburn hair and winning sm le, for she has a fair-size class. Although Spanish is an old stand-by at Do- wagiac High, a new face makes it a more enjoyable class. In her foreign language classes she tries to tcach her pupils about th: people of the country as well as the language. Her Engish class is a course of study made up of grammar. Miss Oelz went to Western Michigan col- lege before she joined our faculty stafff. This summer she plans to go abroad to France. The French Club, a new club regisiertd in our log book, was start' ed by Miss Oelz. Any person who is a member of the French clas. can belong. This club is born thzrd hour during French class. Pa: Addington takes her position at the helm of the sh p, as presdeni. This winter the club members took a trip to Kalamazoo to sge the play The Late Christopher Beane, an English play translated into French. y Around Christmas time the Fxznch club has a party to entertain themselves during their trip. VVe take time out from our eating to sing Christmas carols in French. On the second Tuesday in every month our ship's deck is full of the Spanish Club members. To be a member of this club you have to have a year of Spanish or be taking Spanish. Like the French Club, Miss Lynnette Oelz is advisor for this club, also. Dick Lambert is the chief oliicer. With these two to navigate. the club has a Christmas Party and a Pan-American Day. In Foreign Ports i:ff1 '5SC Setting sail for her first year at Dowagiac High is M.ss Helen Mayer, who hails from Centerville, Michigan, and was educated at Western Michigan College. Holding forth in Room 304, Miss Mayer is the smiling and pleasant helpmate of the Frosh, as she meets them in Latin and Eng- lish classes and helps smooth the rough places, as one of the Freshman Advisors. Her Latin classes are open not only to the freshman but whoever else is brave enough to take on this course. Miss Mayer's first- year Latin Class has mostly the grammar end of Latin while the sgcond-year students get the translating. Laiina Lingua English, to the freshmen who take it in cabin 50-i, find it is not as rough going with Commander Mayer. Miss Mayer also supervises the activities of the Ushers' Club and Latin Club. A newly formed Latin Club is striving under Miss Mayer's guid- ance. The aim of this organization is to help its members to have a clearer and better understanding of the Latin and culture of the Ro- mans. The club also wants to promote interest in the classics and in friendly association among members of the language classes. When it came time to promote the crcwmen to officers the follow ing people were elected: President, Sue Ann liilderbackg Vice president. Mary Ann Black, Secretary, Doug McKay, and Treasurer, Tony Caruso. To entertain ourselves when off duty we have a party at Christmas time and a Basket Dinner at noon. Donald Miller Carson Niefert Motor Jockies If you see a gray Ford whizzing around the pier you know it's Carson Neifert and his Driver's Training Class. Due to bad weather, close to the end of the semester, the recruits are con- fined to cabfn 507 on the third deck. While conhned to their cabin they take a few tests, such as eyesight, reaction, and night driving. The first semester the ciass was open to Seniors only. When Ianuary came sailing in, and the second semester rolled around, Mr. Neifert lowered the ranks so that juniors could take it too. The class is divided into two groups. One group is taken out one day and the other the next so that both groups get an even amount of chances to drive. His class is too large since he admitted Iuniors, so he maneuvered to have a Driver's Training class bath first and second hours. Forward in C s Q x N- A.. - ---4-.,.q.- ---.,f-.0 Hx-- I Notable Naturalist This is the second year Drivcr's Training has been taught aboard D. H. S. Cruising in Dowagiac High School for the hrst time is a tall, red- haired biology instructor. This new member to our fieet is Mr. Don Miller, who can be found in Room 306 or in cabin 200 showing movies. This teacher took his boot training at Northern Illinois State Teach- ers College. Before signing with our crew Mr. Miller did some stu- dent teaching at De Kalb, Illinois and at Aurora, Illinois. Mr. Miller teaches Biology, Senior-high and Iunior-high Conserva- tion. ln his biology class Mr. Miller teaches animal and plant life. facts about insects and germs. Conservation cadets learn about soil and the conservation of forests. If you heard the movie camera running in room 200, most likely the commander in charge of this is Mr. Miller. He has a crew of swabs under him, who run the machine when their commander is busy with his teaching duties. Mr. Miller would like to start a club for the Frosh so they won't forget all they learned by the time their voyage is almost over. Although this is his first trip we hope he registers for our next cruise. F. F. A.
