A l 3 Class Histoly As the story begins, twenty-five bewildered children started to kindergarten at Dow City Con- solidated School on August 21, l944'under the supervision of Miss Goddard. Those who started were -- Bill Anerson, Richard Ahart, Paul Blume, John Boham, Henry Brus, Charles Buff, Norma Butters, Roberta Butters, Adrienne Bergman, Robert Caldwell, Joan Susan Coburn, Mary Lou Dierenfeld, Connie England, Shirley Gorden, Barbara Lahr, Patrick Heffernan, Grave Lahr, Thomas Malone, Danial Paulson, Pearl Putnam, Dorothy Sharp, Marilyn Soper, Vernetta Winn, and Ella Jane Wingrove. In primary we liked the stories of Dick, Jane, Sally, Puff, Spot, 'and Tim. We learned how to color, and to cut out. During this year we also learned to associate and get along with others in society. Dorothy and Ella Jane were scolded for talking too much which we can all see because it is so natural for them. During our second year of school Miss Metcalf. fell head first in love with us when she tumbled from her chair in a sudden state of hysteria. Pearl looks back to her grade school days with fond memories of Henry Brus, but with disapproval for Miss Metcalf's cane. She seemed to think Pearl was spoiled. Ella Jane and Dorothy seemed to think cocoons were more interesting than school for they were late one morning. In second grade we experienced our first moments of vanity when we received our first pictures. The things which we accomplished during that year were: How to tell time, how to read better, and how to work arithmetic problems . Marilyn and Pearl will never forget the embarrassing situation they got themselves into ln the third grade. The boys broke the rules and regulations by rolling a ball down the aisles right under Miss Wiggins' nose. Richard Ahart will remember the yardstick hanging on the blackboard. Miss Wiggins applied it to the seat of his pants because he bounced Ronald Keairnes' head against the wall in the boys' rest room. In fourth grade we learned to fingerpaint and worked hard on our penmanship. In fifth grade the girls thought they would like to take up the art of figurine painting. For their model they used Shirley Gordon. Since they weren't experts some of the silver paint just happened to get on them, too. We were all excited because something new had been added to the school--band. The sixth graders were allowed to start playing in band. During our year in seventh grade we were allowed to play on the junior high teams. Burdette will remember the big crush he had on Jeanette Knierim and the beautiful bracelet he gave her. When we started eighth grade we were all excited about the idea of studying civics. Pearl re- ceived a great big thrill when Bill Miller kissed her. At last we received our eighth grade diplomas and were ready to start to high school. Our grade school teachers were: Miss Agnes, Miss Metcalf, Mrs. Hatfield, Miss Wiggins, Mrs. Ballantine, Miss Hanigan, Miss Turnland, Miss Hoffman, Mrs. Minard, and Mrs. Ploth. Those who entered high school were: Gene Beam, Russell Houston, Terry Miller, Dick Siemer, Richard Ahart, Grace Lahr, Julius Zimmerman, Dorothy Sharp, Beverly Gilbreath, Charles Buff, Marilyn Soper, Shirley Gorden, Richard Brown, Marlene Wadrich, Edna Jensen, Ella Jane Wingrove, Pearl Putnam, Burdette Hard, Mary Lou Dierenfeld, Larry Garrett, Donald Thompson, Dee Buck, and Carole ljryden. We all had a wonderful time on our initiation day, and we will never forget how silly and ridiculous we looked. All the home making girls will always remember writing 500 sentences for Mr. Bechen because they were supposed to have been talking. We will also remember the chair that sat at the back of Study Hall. Pearl and Mary Lou will remember the big collision on the softball field. During our second year of high school Pear and Sammy will always remember the two chairs in the front row on the east side of the geometry class. ' They had' great fun in sliding them back and forth. Mary Lou and Ella Jane will remember the time Mr. Miller and Mr. Petrilla bought them ice cream cones and took them home because they missed their bus because they were correcting papers. We will always remember serving at the Junior-Senior Banquet and at the Alumni Banquet. Richard Ahart received minor cuts and bruises while racing to a Safe Drivers Club Meeting. During our Junior year we will all remember our Junior Class Play, Finders Creepers . We were all excited when our class rings arrived. We had great fun planning our Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme of which was Candyland . We will' never forget some of the things we used to put to- gether in the chemistry lab, especially the rotten egg smell. About the only thing the boys learned was how to be coffee making experts. Terry, Burdette, Richard B. , and Richard Ahart were taking their afternoon nap and over slept, and they almost missed their afternoon classes. A We began our Senior year with great anticipation of graduation. The first big thing we accom- plished was Freshman Initiation and the Senior Party. We had the privilege of being the first Senior Class to take part in the Dedication Ceremony. Senior pictures were taken january 7. On that day, we all ate dinner at Cronk's in the Banquet Room. We went to the Ice Capades on March 19. On March 29 we presented our Senior Class Play, The Atomic Blonde. On Sneak Day we visited Omaha and Lincoln. We were the guests of the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. May 19 we attended our Baccalaureate services. Commencement exercises were held May 23. We will always remember Class Day which was held May 24. The Alumni Banquet, held on the evening of May 24, was our grand finale of our thirteen years at school. Of the twenty-five students that started in primary fifteen are graduating. They are: Richard Ahart, Richard Brown, Charles Buff, Mary Lou Dierenfeld, Shirley Gorden, Burdette Hard, Terry Miller, Larry Garrett, Pearl Putnam, Wayne Rood, Charlotte Potter, Marilyn Soper, Marlene Waderich, Ella jane Wingrove, and Julius Zimmerman. We enjoyed the Junior-Senior Banquet very much. Baccalaureate was held May 19 and Commencement was held the 23rd. Class Day was the morning of May 24th. Our teachers were Mr. Bechen, Mr. Harrington, Mrs. Schneckloth, Mr. Ploth, Mr. Miller, Mr. Petrilla, Mrs. Softly, Mrs. Hendrix, Mr. Faultinson, Miss Cook, Mr. Shotwell, Mrs. Colvin, and Mr. Butterworth. And through the rest of grade school We heard the school bells dong! To the hallowed halls of Dow City, And the memories that we share In our first year of high school, Will always remain with us We did our very best Though we'll travel everywhere. To get A's in everything-- Especially Bechen's tests. One day a hush will fall, The footsteps of us all, Then in our Iunior year, Will echo down the halls and disappear The time was growing near, y To receive the best rings there ever were. And as we sadly start, Then as the days flew by, Our journeys far apart, We remember with a sigh, A part of every heart will linger here. All the fun we had in Dow City High. H In the hallowed halls of Dow City, Oh, we'll miss the halls of Dow City, Where we've lived anti learned to know As we travel on our way, That through the years we'll see you, But there'll still be the memories, In the sweet after glolw. Of our old high school days. Prophecy Ella Jane Wingrove -- Ella, who has turned a new leaf, has surprised us all. After leading a neat and shy life she has blossomed into one of Broadvgay's shapely chorus girls. Shirley Gorden -- Shirley, who has always appreciated the greater art -- food, has become intrigued by her new job as chief wieneristuffer at Swifts and Company in Arion. Burdette Hard -- Burdette, who has always liked to talk a lot, has now a lot to talk to. He is now the chief cook and bottle washer of twenty-one dazzling harem girls. Oh yes, he also has eleven children, that is at the time it was written. Marilyn Soper -- Marilyn, who has been known to bite off more than she could chew is making a big impression to her classmates by modeling false teeth for Houston Dental School in Buck Grove. Marlene Waderich -- Marlene, who had started out to be some great career girl, has given up all hope of succeeding and has come down to the common way of living and is now sewing buttons on men's underwear. Richard Ahart -- Richard, who has always expected to get up in this world, has layed down on the job. He now rents a monkey daily to accompany him on the street corner of Kenwood where he works. He holds a little cup in his hand and we haven't quite figured out what it is for. How- ever, we do see people walking by dropping change into the cup. Terry Miller -- Terry is now on a safari in Africa counting pink elephants. Chuck Buff -- Chuck has gone to California to get one of the better jobs. He is getting paid very well for his specialized work. He works at Singer and Company punching holes in needles. Julius Zimmerman -- Iulius hasn't surprised us in the least. He is serving time in Sing Sing for committing numerous crimes. He was caught choking cars at Denison Auto Where he was em- ployed. Pearl Putnam -- Dale Wright wanted to be married before he was twenty-one but his dream was not realized for Pearl is off to the wilds of Africa hunting her Tarzan. Mary Lou Dierenfeld -- Mary Lou has topped them all. She has ventured to Italy to work for a leading wine company. She is reportedly seen each afternoon stomping grapes with her feet in huge vats behind the wine works. Mary says, It's very helpful for a clear complexion. Wayne Rood -- Wayne has taken us all by surprise as he is now employed by Ringling Brothers as the human cannon ball. His weight is now one hundred and twenty pounds because the friction of the cannon has reduced him a 'little . Richard Brown -- Richard has gone to manicure school and has learned the profession. He manicures all of the Hollywood Starlets fingers and Richard has commented that it is hard to keep his mind on his work with such devastating beauties to hold his hand. Larry Garrett -- Well, I hear Larry is the chief chef at the women's prison at Rockwell City. His specialty is baking cakes for the condemned last meal. Larry always said he liked women, but I didn't know he kept them caged up behind bars. Charlotte Potter -- Charlotte and Duane are happily married now and are living in Oregon with their four children. Charlotte has her own beauty shop and Duane is running a Standard Station. They are in the money now, so th ey traded the Ford and are getting a Cadillac so they can out run the Lone Ranger .
