Class History In the fall of 1941 thirty-four new students marched up the stairs with Miss Agnes to begin the first of thirteen years of schooling. They were Bobby Bauer, Blair Baughman, Eileen Birney, Jimmy Boham, Billy Brink, Betty Brown, Glen Chowning, Danny Christiansen, Johnny Coburn, Joseph Cramer, Patty Crandall, Jimmy Cross, Shirley Fouts, Agnes Higgins, Jerry Houston, Marvin Keairnes, Harold Kureger, Winfred Lambert, Mildred Malone, Olive Mae North, Helen Ann Nuzum, Elizabeth Ann Parrott, Ronny Schiltz, DeWayne Siemer, Carmen Smith, Karen Smith, Loren Smith, Wayne Smith, Bruce Tillett, Ronald Williams, Bryce Winn, Barbara Jean Ettleman, Robert Meyer, and Walter Greene. In kindergarten, we got much of a thrill at sitting at the little tables. After an enjoyable story we always had a nap on our rugs. We will always remember the pretty cakes Miss Agnes drew on the board when someone had a birthday. In first grade we all remember the Dog House, especially Jim Cross!! We had a new ex- perience in sitting at desks and started to do arithmetic. In second grade Miss Howorth sponsored a vitamin play which was a lot of fun and gave us a wider knowledge of health. We went to the blackboard and played Cat and Mouse and Going to Town. Third grade was an exciting year, Every Friday afternoon we had poems and singing. If we had our spelling correct we got to go outside ear ly. When Pat and Karen were sent to the cloak- room to sort naners they usually stalled by sorting them three or four times. Remember the day three girls forgot to hear the bell so they could stay outside and build snow houses ? Thanks- giving time we dressed as Pilgrims and Indians and marched through the different grades. In fourth grade we participated with fifth and sixth grades in giving a Christmas Operetta, Jack Snratt . We got much of a thrill out of using scratch pens, ink, dictionaries, and work- books. We also had a flower shower on Miss Riddle. We started fractions in fifth grade and mastered them thanks to Mrs. Ballentine. We had a fruit roll and a spelling bee with the sixth grade, too. Our good penmanship can be attributed to Miss Turnland. We started Iowa history and learned the flags of many countries. All of us remember not getting any recess to prepare us for the seventh grade. We had a lot of fun the day we rode our bikes out to McCutcheon's tim- ber for our picnic. Remember the snake, Jim and Leonard? In the seventh grade we will remember the lockers in the cloakroom. We had a new ex- perience having two different teachers. Miss Manion had the unfortunate incident of finding a craw -daddy in her lunch basket at the picnic we had in Shumate's timber. Wonder how it got there, Mitchell? , Finally we reached the eighth grade. We had a very nice Valentine Party even though we did have odd food, consisting of pop, ice cream, cherry pie and OLIVES. Civics was a new?ub- ject to us. Three girls had to sit in the hall because Mr. Smith thought they had not learned the rules of behavior. Had they, Bette D,? This year ended our exciting adventures and we were about to leave our grade school. The teachers we had in the grades were Miss Agnes, Miss Metcalf, Miss Howorth, Miss Wiggins, Miss Riddle, Mrs. Ballentine, Miss Turland, Miss Man- ion, Miss Hoffman, and Mr. Smith. In the fall of 1950 thirty students began high school. They were Dale Beam, Rita Best, Eileen Birney, Clara Mae Bramley, Betty Brown, Joseph Cramer, Jim Cross, Bette Doidge, Barbara Ettleman, Jack Garrett, Clifford Gorman, Jerry Houston, Jackie Lambert, Opal Ma- lone, Richard Malone, Mary Marshall, Leonard Mitchell, James Moore, Arlo McCutcheon, Pau! Olsen, Arlen Petersen, Allen Rosburg, Walter Shumate, Karen Smith, Jerome Thompson, Edith Wingrove, Norma Mathys, Shirley Fouts, and Robert McCoy. Initiation was our first big event in entering Dow City High. We dressed in silly clothes and had a lot of fun. That night the Seniors honored us with a party. Many students went out for band which started that year. In our Sophomore year we gave a Saint Patrick's party which was a great success. We took part in the Junior-Senior Banquet by serving and entertaining. Some earned letters for bas- ketball that year. Our Junior year was very eventful. We had muchfun in giving our Class Play, Cracked Nutts . Some of the students also took part in the one-act plays given. We had a. big thrill when our class rings came and naturally we thought them the prettiest of any ever seen. We had many disagreements in planning our Junior -Senior Banquet. Our theme was Moonlight and Roses which was a great success. We had much fun on Vocational Guidance Day in Denison. FINALLY we reached our Senior year, It was filled with many events which started with ini- tiation of the Freshmen. Betty Brown and Karen Smith were pianists for the Christmas Operetta. We had our class pictures taken on January ninth. All of us ate in the dining room of Watje's Cafe. April first was Vocational Guidance Day in Denison. We spent a very enjoyable day visiting the different occupational classes. April second our class went on its Skip Day to Lincoln, Nebraska. There we visited the capitol building, Boys Town and ate dinner at Brandeis. Then we went to various places in Omaha. On May seventh we were guests at a banquet given by the Juniors. After- wards we went to a show, May sixteenth was Baccalaureate and May twentieth was Commencement. The Alumni Banquet was held May twenty-first and was the grand finale to our thirteen years of school. N 5 18 Prophecy of the Class of '54 We are now on the Moon, the year 1970. Sixteen years have passed since that brilliant class of '54 has graduated from the Dow City High School. We are wondering what all those talented kids are doing. Let's gaze down at the old Earth and see. Eileen Birney has fooled us all by staying single and is teaching school in the Ozarks. She has been seen lately with the great love of her high school days. Karen Smith is doing very well running her chicken ranch. Of course, she has lots of help with her sons. Andy has always been disappointed because they have never had any girls since he has always admired the feminine gender. Betty Brown has wasted her shorthand and typing ability to marrying .Terry after graduation, but is certainly using her Home Economics knowledge with her two sets of twins. Leonard Mitchell is now practicing dentistry in Dow City. He followed this profession because of the advice of his Chemistry teacher, Mr. Bechen. Mary Marshall is happily married and is putting that hope chest of-herS tO use. She and her husband Norman are living in Charter Cak, but they take their five boys to Dow City School. .Tack Garrett and his wife, Shirley, are doing very nicely with their nightclub. Jack has his own band and Shirley is his featured singer. Larry makes a very good baby sitter for their two children, Norma and Ralph. Jackie Lambert is doing very nicely with his 600 acre farm. They have two foreign cars and a station wagon. They can afford them as his wife, Martha, is a high-salaried schoolteacher at Buck Grove. Sylvester Head is an understudy for liberace, He got the job because of his hair, flashy smile and musical ability. Jerry Houston finally made up with Marilyn after graduation. They have adopted three children. Their names are Fern, Don, Freida. Those names have such memories of their high school days. Glenn Petersen has mortgaged his car to provide food for his wife, Norma and their six girls. Since his business in Buck Grove has fizzled out, Bette Doidge is very famous for her new pill which causes you to lose weight. She gained her knowledge by being a dietitionist of the Memorial Hospital. She has won the love of Dutch because she is now a small '90 pound' Bette. Clara Mae Bram1ey's love for fast cars, particularly Fords, has gotten her a job driving stock cars. She is now appearing at the Denison fair grounds, with her short blond husband tformer- ly of Dow Cityl. Clifford Gorman has used several of Bette's pills and has won the five mile race in the Olympics for two years straight, Clifford is Za Za Gabor's sixth, I believe. James Cross always had brains to burn but we never thought he'd be the top undertaker of Ken- wood. .Tim just finished writing a book on How To Live While Living . Jim hasn't married yet, but still likes his nights , .Toe Cramer is now starring as Superman over station ZIP. He really has those kids thrilled when he walks through cement. walls with no effort at all, His favorite listener is Shirley Gordon. Dutch Malone is now very excited about his new bride to be, Bette Doidgc. He reports that she didn't lose any of her charming personality when sho lost her weight, 2. The play concerns a very well-to-do family who lived in the Ozarks. After receiving a sarcastic letter from some New York cousins saying they were coming for an old Bible which contained a record of the family tree, the Rankin children and their friends decided to repay the Haines for their remarks, by acting like hillbillies. When the cousins came to visit the Rankins, they found themselves in the midst of a feud between the Rankins and Starks. But the Haines children caught on to their scheme. They decided to go on with it to pay their mother back for the letter she had written. Mrs. Rankin, who had been on a trip, returns and explains to Mr. and Mrs. Haines about her children's scheme to get even with her. At the end everyone is forgiven and all are friends.
