Everything Nice . .. , Class History In the fall of 1939, thirty-five very anxious youngsters tramped up the stairs to the kindergarten room. These were: Emmett Ahart, Kathryn Ahart, Bruce Alexander, Sharlene Bauer, Elvin Elwood, Marceline Greene, Faye Hanson, Joan Heffernan, Billy Hesse, Hanse Malone, Norma Jean Mathys, Lois Mayne, Alice McCoid, Alice McDonald, Dean Nicholsen, Adrian O'Meara, Joan O'Meara, Edward Smith, Maxine Staller, Merlin Staller, Mary Ann Stepanek, Billie Thomas, Floy Baughman, Robert Wolfe, Marilyn Weber, Donna Brink, Alma Mathias, Clemet Birney, Bonnie Price, Geraldine Jilg, Melvin Malone, Richard Chambers, Fern Cue, Delores Dryden. ln this room, we started learning about how grown up we were supposed to act and be. We will well remember our daily rests on our pads on the floor. We all felt that we had ac- complished something when we mastered reading from our Dick and Jane books. We also had fun coloring and printing. l'm sure we all had our turn to stand in the corner with our hands over our faces when we got into mischief. We were all very proud on visiting day, for we had the largest turnout in the school that year. We will never forget the games of London Bridge and May l? that we played at recess time- ln the first grade, we really felt grown up because of the big desks. We always made fancy covers for our treasured report cards. We got to use painted scissors and learned to work with numbers. Remember when Floy fell off the bleachers and broke her arm? She was quite a frightened little girl! By the time we reached the second grade, school was old stuff to us. We found we were quite talented in making boiled eggs look like people. Some of us got a little hungry-- wonder where those eggs went! ln the third grade, we learned how to tell time. Some high school teacher may regret this--seems there are several clock-watchers in our class. We had lots of fun parading as Pilgrims and Indians at Thanksgiving time. Fourth grade will always be remembered because that year we gave a health play for our parents and friends. We enjoyed using our scratch pens and ink even if our mothers didn't. We tackled the multiplication tables full force, but they still were very hard. How's that big toe you stubbed on our picnic in the timber, Donna Mae ? ln the fifth grade, we varnished little whatnot shelves for our mothers. We began learning the states and their capitals. Some of us haven't finished yet. We were very proud of our pint-sized cheerleaders in the sixth grade--as were the pint-sized gals themselves. They even rated a picture in the school annual. ln this grade, we also tackled those awful decimals. All in the class took part in the grades' operetta given during the Christmas seas on of that year. ln seventh grade, Lois really strained herself selling magazines. She was the school's top salesman. We all had lots of fun talking to Beverly Bergman son the little black box on the window sill. We certainly had to act old because we had desks in high school and als'o spelling with the high school students. lncidentally, we almost always had better grades than those oldsters themselves. I wonder if Miss Johns on appreciated our fruit throw in the eighth grade? We all re- ceived low deportment grades that year. I wonder why ? Fern represented the county at the state spelling contest in Des Moines. l'm certain that all the teachers missed us after we graduated fr om eighth grade in the spring of '4 8. We were a perfect class of angels! Our teachers through the grades were: Miss Agnes, Miss McBride, Miss Lipke, Miss Wiggins, Mrs. Mousel, Mrs. Ballantine, Mrs. Turnlund, Mrs. Bloham, Miss Armentrout, and Miss Johnson. Twenty-two Freshmen started to high school i.n '4 8. They were: Bonnie Ahart, Emmett Ahart, Floy Baughman, Donna Brink, Donna Brown, Perry Buff, Fern Cue, James Ettleman, Donna Hamblen, Urban Katzer, Lorraine Kolln, Paul Leslie, Eugene Malone, Lois Mayne, Alice McDonald, Mary Ellen Putnam, Mary Ann Stepanek, Billie Thomas, Paulene Thomsen, James Trierweiler, Eugene Christiansen, and Ortensia Herrera. We all looked forward to Initiation Day. We got plastered with lipstick, but we showed those Seniors! On the trip downtown, we ran away from them, led by Superman Baughman. That night, after a lot of scrubbing to remove the lipstick, we attended a party in our honor. We are all glad Miss Thompson had a lot of patience trying to teach us the ways of a high school student. At the close of the year, the Home Economics girls gave a style show. We showed our efforts to our mothers to the tune of Glow Worm. As Sophomores, we gave our first school party, It was quite a success. We were very. excited and scared when presenting our fairy tale movies the fateful English period. They must have been all right. The grade children listened to the narrator with their mouths open. The biggest thrill of the year was serving at the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme of the banquet was a Southern Plantation, so we were all dressed as Negro slaves. It was lots of fun and accidents were few. More serving came up at the annual Alumni Banquet. There were quite a few fallen arches the next morning, if I remember correctly. Mary Ellen, why did you have to refinish the top of you desk? That year, because of good support from our loyal Dow City fans and good playing on the part of our girls' team, we beat Charter Oak to win the county tournament. Happy Day! Our Junior year, never a dull moment. Everyone waited anxiously for our Junior play. It was The Daffy Dil1s, a three-act comedy, and a huge success. I'm sure Mrs. Walters gained a few gray hairs worrying about the outcome. We advertised by wearing Feeps. We drew a lot of attention anyway. On the big night, there was a large crowd and everything came off as planned. After the play, Mrs. Walters had everyone at her home for a celebration of the success. We tried something new i.n the way of a party. We had a Square Dance party. Eats and party were enjoyed by everyone. Even us. After we had ordered our class rings, we waited impatiently for ages, or so it seemed. When they finally arrived, we were very, very proud of them. Say kids, why were some of them missing so soon? We also chose our class motto, colors, and flower in this year. Thanks to Emmett, our motto is Yesterday's Past, Tomorrow's A Gamble, Today's A Sure Thing, Make The Most Of It. Our colors are green and silver, and our flower is the white carnation. One of the most important events of our Junior year was preparing for the banquet. As a theme we chose the Gay Nineties. We built an inn of brown crepe paper and called it The Tamarack. Outside were hitching posts. On the walls inside were hung famous slogans of the Nineties. We used card tables with big flowered tablecloths. As a center- piece on each table was a candle inside the mouth of a bottle. Miniature beer mugs served as nut cups. Favors for the boys were black mustaches, while the girls had paras ols. The entertainment'followed the theme and was provided by the Sophomores. Four of the girls were dressed as men of the period and furnished music as a barber shop quartette. Four of the boys made excellent chorus girls. There was also a charming cigarette girl and a torch singer. We'll all remember the many weeks of planning and hard work. Also those biology pins we used to hold the crepe paper in place. ' Our Senior year followed the usual style--with a bang. First of all came the Initiation of the Freshmen. V We had them dress as characters out of Mother Goose Land. That night a party was given in honor of the occasion, and everyone overdid himself to enjoy it. The Seniors had their pictures taken the eighth of January. We were all astonished to find out that we did not break the camera. We began to feel like high and mighty Seniors indeed when we ordered our announcements and chose our caps and gowns. Our caps and gowns were gray with green and silver tassels. The week of the county and sectional tournaments proved to be very exciting. Everyone complained of a sore throat when it was all over. q Our Senior play turned out to be a great success, though we had our doubts. The name of it was Do-Re-Mi, a comedy in three acts. The Seniors got an early start for their annual Sneak Day. We hit all the high spots and after it was over, a group of weary, but happy, Seniors made their way back home. What a day that was! Everyone agreed that the banquet given by the Juniors was little short of wonderful. Who could help but enjoy himself on this night of nights! Baccalaureate was held Sunday, the llth of May, and Commencement, the 15th of May. Diplomas were handed out and the many memories of school were somehow attached to them. Some will definitely make us sad, but our anticipation of the future already is helping to counteract the feeling. Our annual Class Day was held at the end of the year. The athletic awards were given out and a special program planned. All these things, as well as others, made our Senior year memorable. Remember the Senior girls, Miss Thompson and Miss Patrick, at the Home Economics picnic ? Even if the food did get extra br own, it still tasted goody even the worm in the apple. Remember the frozen tomatoes ? Remember how excited everyone was over the new Greyhound sweat- shirts ? Remember the good time we had in Denis on getting our pictures taken? Through all the confusion and fun, we somehow managed to soak up an education, too. Out of the 18 Seniors, 10 have been on the honor roll. This is a high percentage. The teachers, who have contributed to our intelligence were: Mr. Butterworth, Miss Thompson, Miss Patrick, Miss Hugron, Mr. Hughes, Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Harrington, Mr- Elmore, Mr. Hansen, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Ploth. Of the thirty-five who started kindergarten, seven are now graduating together. These are: Emmett Ahart, Floy Baughman, Donna Brink, Fern Cue., Lois Mayne, Alice McDonald, and Mary Ann Stepanek. We, the Seniors of 1952, are filled with many pleasant memories of our school days. As we leave good old D. C. H. S., our hearts are filled with the joy and wisdom inspired by thirteen years of pleasant companionship and perfect gr owing pains. The Denver Herald A late entry in our contest for the most unusual mixed group of people Qmales and femalesj in 1962 represented by at least two of our readers, was the following from Twin Springs, Wyoming. Although too late to qualify in the judging, this little piece of literature, sent in by Mrs. Perry Buff, wife of the Rev. P. D. Buff, of Twin Springs, is such a novel literary compos ition that we thought it deserved publication. Oddly enough, the group depicted by Mrs. Buff is that most distinguished product of the Dow City, Iowa Consolidated High School, the famous class of 1952. Both Mrs. Buff, the former Lorraine Kolln, and Perry, graduated with that eminent class of '52, so it must truly have been an outstanding and unusual group. We will make no attempt to list the members of this great class in order of importance or degree of suc- cess, since they are all so outstanding any such attempt would necessarily be futile. So we will merely summarize the account of each member in the order in which they were presented by Mrs. Buff. According to Lorraine, Alice is making the most money. But as top model for the Hare and Polecat Fur Company, the former Miss McDonald has been very busy. Too busy to have much time to spend with my husband and family, says Alice. But Mr. Bramley doesn't mind. Robert and l have agreed that true love is the most important thing in life. Lois Mayne, head of the Howorth and Egan cattle domain, is very in- fluential in the livestock world. .Tust the other day, she made a statement that stunned the cattle dominion. Said Miss Mayne, lf livestock numbers continue to decrease, in time this country will be without livestock. Feb. 4, 1963 What would Swift and Company do, then ? Marty Furne has at last found a job to satisfy his natural inclination to avoid any type of physical or mental exertion. He is chief mattress tester for the King Koil Mattress Company of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. A very soft job, dm't you think? But so what-- he gets paid for it. Floy Baughman finally talked Mr. Hatfield into getting married--to her, of course. But Dizzy doesn't know if he is as happy as when he was full of fun and fancy free. Our good old Hungry Five used to be a lot of fun, says Diz, but when you've got a 'hungry five' of your own, it amounts to a lot of work. Mrs- Hatfield, how- ever, manages to keep him in a jovial mood most of the time- Bonnie Ahart never got married after all, because Chuck Glotfelty wed the governor's daughter instead. Bonnie stuck with the teaching pro- fession and is now in her ninth year at District No. 2, four miles north of Deloit- B oney Bonnie, the Spin- ster, as her students call her, hasn't lost all hope, though. ln fact, she and Mr. Duane Treft, an old high school flame, have been seen together in a few local night spots recently. Needless to say, Paul Leslie is the most famous member of the class of '52. While Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute' of Technol ogy, Mr. Leslie discovered a new type of virus for immunization against affaire du coeur. Paul is now working on a secret formula in his private labora- tory. As yet, it has not been disclosed what the secret formula is for, but Paul says that he'1l find a use for it yet. Donna Tightwad Hamblen, as she is known in the business world, president of the Endum Scratchem Flea Powder Company, is really a crafty and progressive business woman. Luckily, her husband, C. V. Heiden, is of the submissive type. Not to be outdone by the Andrews sisters, Pauline Thomsen, Mary Ellen Putnam, and Donna Brink, that famous singing trio, recently made a record that already has reached sales in ex- cess of the one million mark. They entered into a singing career on the advice of Mr. Elmore, their high school music instructor, who recognized the unusual quality in their singing. If perfect contentment and freedom from hurry and worry mean anything, Fern has really got 'er made. And as the wife of that most efficient swine producer in the Ozark region, L. J. .Tens en, and mother of nine vigorous offspring, Fern has been the most productive member of the whole class. But last spring things didn't look so good for the Jensen clan. A mysterious disease invaded L. J.'s herd, fatally inflicting some of his prize breeding animals, and the young 'pigs grew so thin that he had to tie knots in their tails to keep them fr om crawling through the knot holes in the board fence. Fortunately, however, L. J. contacted a competent veterinarian, Dr. J. M. Trierweiler, who managed to pull the animals through. Them hawgs shore was skinny, according to Fern. That doctor shore done a good job, to quote James. Perhaps the only member of the whole class who actually realized her childhood ambition is Mary Ann Stepanek. Her glamorous figure, won- derful form, and most unusual grace, have made her one of the top ballet dancers in the country. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Blum of Earling, Iowa, are the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy, Robert .Tr. Little Bobby is the seventh install- ment in a series fto be continued, of little blessings, including Richard, Don, Marvin, Clarence, Carl, and Petie. Donna Mae, the-former Miss Brown, and Robert seem to be very happy on their chicken farm. Emmett Ahart has settled down on a sheep ranch in Arizona. He has over 20,000 animals and is planning to step up production in the near future. But he is concerned with quality as well as quantity and is now working on an animal that will automatically molt every spring to save the expense of shearing. Duane Hard and Rosetta seem to be doing quite well on their acreage. Their small section of land f639 acres, is all they had ever hoped to get fr om Louie. They have no children as yet, but Duane is hoping for some boys to help till the soil and milk the cows. We're sorry, folks, but that's all there is--there ain't no more. Vocational Agriculture Vocational Agriculture was introduced in the Dow City High School with the beginning of the 1951-1952 school year. Forty-three boys were enrolled in the course. The agricultural program for high school boys is designed especially for farm boys and its aim is to establish them in farming. Three phases of the instruction are classroom study, farm shop work, and a supervised farming program for each student. The Champion Chapter of the Future Farmers of America was organized during the school year. The purposes of the chapter are to develop leadership, co-operation, and citizenship. Ed- ucational and recreational activities are sponsored by the chapter. The officers of the F. F. A. are: President ..... Vice-President .... . . Secretary ..... Treasurer... Reporter. . . SCENES FROM THE CAMPBELLS ARE COMING i The threat that The Campbells Are Coming turned out to be genuine, as evidenced by the matinee and evening performance of the Junior Class Play. When the Brannigan family learns that daughter Kaye is bringing home a fancy, snooty fiance, Kingston Campbell, and his mother, they decide to put on a hillbilly act horrible enough to frighten away the Campbells. The plan helped along by the hillbilly maid, Catalpa Tapp, and her odorous father, Bildad Tapp, succeeds all too well. Dick's moron act, Ma Brannigan as a toothless gun- toting old hillbilly, Betty as the bashful type who spends most of her time under tables, and Jeff, who starts a feud, are enough to frighten the most strong-hearted of prospec- tive in-laws, Kay, who sees it has all turned out for the best, is reunited with her hometown boy friend, Jeff Scudder, and the Brannigan household once again takes on a fairly normal appearance, Cast Ma Brannigan .... ..... ....... Each Sheridan has a mind of his own, not easily shaken! The central problem involves ambitious and bossy sister C1are's attempts to start brother John .off to study music in New York. She has the reluctant aid of suitor Bill, a Big Town lawyer, who would rather be an ordinary guy back in his home town. An uncanny gift for mis-timing things keeps distracted John from his train and the bright lights, but his resolutions to take lessons right here in the west and thus fulfilled in spite of Clare. Bill, too, wins his point, for after hemming and hawing for days, he final- ly proposes to strong-willed Clare.
