IZ , Class History y ln the fall of 193 8, thirty-two scared but very game youngsters trudged up the steps to Miss Agnes' room. These were Marilyn Smith, LaVonna Swenehart, Anna Mae Price, Paul Leslie, Minnie Malone, Ralph Tech, Delmar Weise, Estheir Omstead, LaVonna Clothier, Betty Andersen, Bill Baber, Clara Mae Mathys, LaVerne Poitevin, Maurice Rule, Beverly Smith, Robert Tillet, Jean Weber, Roberta Jean Deiber, Marty Furne, Dwayne Tech, Isabel Hunt, Connie Ahart, Vincent Ahart, Betty Jleane Stuin, Daryl Keairnes, Eddie Houston, Junior Croxell, Glen Beam, Perry Buff,l Viola Jean Coburn, Clara Mae Beam, and Glen Higgins. Here we started our school life and it wasn't long until everyone had caught on to what was expected of them and some things not expected. l'm sure we will all remember kindergarten or trxe birthday cakes we drew on the board, and the singing of Old Shoes, New Shoesx' whenever anyone had a new pair of shoes. It was fun, too, playing the games Miss Algnes taught us and learning to read, color, and print. We were all glad to see the end of the first year of school but before the summer ended we were eagerly awaiting the new school year. How proud we were to have desks now instead of tables! ln first grade, we became even 'more accustomed to school life and by the time we reached second grade we were fast learning all tricks of the trade. l'm sure Connie and LaVonna will always remember the second grade and Miss Metcalf's paddle, Peppy. In third grade, we were taught the habits of Indians and Pilgrims. Here we also learned to control our desire to whisper. Remember, Bill, when you had lto go to the cloakroom ? Good thing the janitor came along when he did. Fourth grade will always beremembered because this was the year we started using ink. How proud we were that now we were trusted with ink. Our mothers didn't appreciate it very much, though, when we came home ink from head to foot. ln fifth grade, we were acquainted with The Little Colonel series., Also, this was the year we started our dramatic careers. The girls made up and presented a play to our class as well as other visitors. We thought we were doing something wonderful then. t ln sixth grade, Miss Turnlund did her best to make us good writers, but l'm sure all high school teachers have wondered where our writing talents were by the time we got to high school. We were very proud to have Betty Andersen represent our class in the County Spelling Bee when we were in sixth and seventh grades. Marilyn Smith represented our class when we were eighth graders. , Our grade school days came to an end when we received our eighth rade diplo- mas in the spring of '47. All our grade school teachers were rather sad o see us go into high school because we always supplied them with numerous fruity rolls. Our teachers through the grades were Miss Agnes, Miss McBride, Miss Metcalf, Miss Wiggins, Miss Rounds, Miss Mendenhall, Miss Turnlund, Miss I-lanhigan, Miss Johnson, and Mrs. Boham. J 13 As green, but energetic, Freshies we entered high school in the fall of '4'l. On the roll call were: Virgie Adamson, Connie Ahart, Vincent Ahart, Betty Andersen, Bill Baber, Glen Beam, Carl Beymer, Franklin Bolte, John Brink, LaVonna Clothier, Leola Coburn, Viola Coburn, Duane Hard, Charlie Harder, James Houston, Daryl Keairnes, Vernon Malone, Rueben Malone, Clara Mae Mathys, LaVerne Poitevin, James Schwartz, Marilyn Smith, Norman Weed, Maxine Wright, and George Andersen, Jr. Of these twenty-five beginners, fifteen dropped out, so our graduating class now numbers ten. Initiation was the first high spot of our high school career. The girls had to dress as boys and the boys as girls. Of course, all were plastered with lipstick. What a very funny sight we made. It was loads of fun though, and everyone enjoyed himself immensely. That night, a party was given for all Freshmen. l'm sure we'll always remember the verse on our invitations which read as follows: Remember that the mighty Oak was once a Nut like you. The Home Economics girls were very proud to have been chosen to give a Christmas tea. It was beautiful and under the excellent guidance of Miss Thompson, highly successful We gave our first high school party during this year. It was a May day party and very successful. As Sophomores, we were a little more experienced about high school ways. At first, geometry got us down but with excellent teaching we soon mastered it. This was also the year we made our favorite fairy tale into a movie and showed it to the grade kids as an English assignment. The biggest thrill of our Sophomore year was the serving at the Junior-Senior Banquet. The theme of the banquet was a circus so the girls dressed as gypsies and the boys as clowns. It was lots of fun and no one spilled a thing. Serving at the Alumni Banquet was quite a different thing, though. Everyone's feet hurt that night! Our Junior year was -filled with excitement from the very beginning. Everyone was excited over the prospect of giving a play. When the play came and parts were given out we were all eager to begin practice. The name of our play was Oh, Kay and it was a mystery-comedy in three acts. l'm sure we all drove Mrs. Walters crazy for fear we wouldn't have our parts learned on time. Our play was given October Zlst, and attended by a record crowd. As soon as our play was over, we ordered our class rings. This was an event for which we had been waiting for eleven long years. To us, our rings were the most beautiful in the world and we wore them with a feeling of pride. We took time out in the hustle and bustle of school life to choose our class motto, colors, and flowers. This took much pondering, but finally we chose Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead as our class motto: blue and white as our colors, and the gardenia as our flower. Gardenia means refinement and we thought this fitted our class very well. 14 This year we were giving the Junior-Senior Banquet and we wanted it to be something special that no one would soon forget. With Mrs. Smith's helpy we chose as a theme An Old-Fashioned Plantation Party. This theme went veryf well with the girls' beautiful formals and the boys' suits. Blue crepe paper wash stretched across the gym to make sky. Silver stars and a beautiful yellow moon was then placed in the sky. Around the gym wall we put up stonewall crepe paper tmrepresent a stone wall with hollyhocks running through it. We entered through a white picket fence covered with flowers made by the Junior girls. For nutcups, we had little brown buckets, and for favors we had little southern lady dolls for the girls and little stovepipe hats for the boys. Our programs were little books made by the class out of stiffly starched feed sacks. The Sophomores made very good negro slaves. Music was furnished throughout the evening by six of the slaves. After the banquet was over, we took everyone to Denison to a movie at the Ritz. Our banquet was a great success and we had oodles of fun preparing for itJ I'm sure Mr. and Mrs. Smith will never forget taking us five Junior girls to Omiaha to get materials for our banquet. In fact, we heard afterward that Mr. Smith told his eighth graders never to take a bunch of Junior girls to Omaha. q Our Senior year started out with a bang. First of all came the initiation of the Freshmen and new teachers. We had them dress as various advertisements seen in newspapers and magazines. That night a party was given for the Freshmen and fun was had by all. The Seniors had their pictures taken the fourth of January. All were' extreme- ly happy when they discovered they didn't break the camera. t We felt very grown up indeed when we ordered our announcements qand chose our caps and gowns. Our caps and gowns were blue with blue tassels. The week of the Sectional and District tournaments were filled with excitement. Everyone admitted hoarseness and sore throats after it was all over. Our Senior play was a great success. It was a comedy in three adts and the name was Sally Lou. We had loads of fun preparing for it and Miss Patrick had to have a great deal of patience before it was all over. The Seniors got an early start for their annual Sneak Day. What ia day this was! We managed to hit all the high spots and after it was all over there was a bunch of pretty tired Seniors. . The banquet given bythe Juniors was swell. Everyone had theibest time ever! All these things as well as others made our Senior year memorable.. Remem- ber the picnic in the park with the five Senior girls and Miss Thompson? Remember the wonderful faculty dinner given by the Senior Home Economics girls ? Remember Miss Thompson treating us to pumpkin pie and whipped cream in Sociology ? These things we will never forget. i i 1 5 Baccalaureate was held Sunday, the 13th of May, and Commencement, the 17th of May. Diplomas were handed out and as we received them our memories made us sad, and our anticipation of the future made us glad. Our annual class day was held at the end of the year. Athletic awards were given and a special program planned. Oh yes, through all this excitement and adventure, we did get an education. Out of our ten Seniors, eight have been on the- honor roll all year. This is the highest percentage of any class in the past four years. The teachers that contributed to our intelligence were Mr. Butterworth, Miss Thompson, Mr. Baker, Miss Carter, Mr. Hughes, Mrs. Walters, Mrs. Peterson, Miss Hugron, Miss Patrick, Mr. Harrington, Mr. Elmore, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Of the thirty-two who started kindergarten together, eight are now graduating together. These are Marilyn Smith, Betty Andersen, Connie Ahart, Clara Mae Mathys, LaVonna Clothier, Bill Baber, Laverne Poitevin, and Glen Beam. We, the Seniors of 1951, are filled with many pleasant memories of our school- days. As we leave D. C. H. S., our hearts are filled with sadness and we know we will never forget the pleasant associations of the past thirteen years. 16 Flash! Flash! l l Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen--Greetings from your reporter, Hedda Topper, who comes to you direct from Los Angeles to bring you all the Iiews when it is news. . It's coincidental that my items tonight concern a famous grouplof people who were once members of the same high school class in Dow City, Iowa. They graduated fr om that worthy institution way back in 1951 and are now lscattered far and wide to the four corners of the earth. Well, let's see what hasihappened to that little band of men and women in the past ten years. Rumors are flying concerning Glen Beam, who is said to have set the date for his seventh marriage. Your reporter spoke to him just before the broadcast and he denies any intention of wedding Elizabeth Taylor, but we wonderx. Glen is quite a Romeo. The No Sleep Alarm Clock Company reports that Connie Ahart, formerly a secretary there, has been promoted to a Vice-Presidency in the organization. It's understood that Miss Ahart will be in charge of the testing laboratory. In the opinion of your reporter, a wise choice has been made, for Miss Ahart spends all of her spare time studying to get ahead. We've been expecting some signs of ro- mance in her life but according to Miss Ahart, I'm just not interested. My career comes first. r Mrs. LaVerne Poitevin, formerly Marilyn Smith, announced that she is giv- ing up her career as a nurse to care for their twins, Ethel Viola and Lloyd Howard. LaVerne is now coach at Vassar College, having specialized in girls' basketball. His interest was aroused while in high school. ' y President Vincent Ahart took off from Las Vegas Airport yesterday on a trip to Europe to view the International situation. He will return in three days in order to attend his daughter Margaret's concert at Carnegie Hall. V I see Clara Mae Mathys has done it again. Her World Basketball Tepm hasn't lost a game in the last five years. Could it be her playing ? It is thought that they will win the World Championship Tournament starting next week. She inust have got her growth after leaving school, as she is now 7 feet and 99 hundreths inches tall. I l A guest speaker next Sunday here in Los Angeles will be the Right1Reverend William Baber. He is speaking at the First Methodist Church and his sqrmon will be on How Young People Should Meet Temptations. His latest clean-up cam- paign is against the Golden Peacock where Betty Andersen has been winning nation- al acclaim for herself as a bubble dancer in the stage show, The Big1Bubble. Postmaster Weed announced to the Dow City Voice a few days ago that stamps will now be 4 lfZff in Dow City because of the higher cost of living. Norman is considered very influential and very distinguished, especially since he has a mustache and wears horn-rimmed glasses. His hobby is detective ork. His latest triumph has been the solution of the great Dow City robbery lx mystery for 10 yearsj. l 17 I have a little enpetilion in my business. A new reporter, LaVoana Clothlerg has :working eg ,Q Louei14gCurson'sq ihowand has Bien distal chance for a progrsizi and joesip column 'of her own. It is rumored around town that sho will take it ' A e With this, we conclude another broadcast of News and Views, snonsored -by I-Ioglwashf' the heat mouth gargle in the mid-west. Listen to ourlbroadcast each week, as these famous people will undoubtedly be making news in the future. dt n , X A .I ua Last Will and Testament KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS: We, the Senior Class of Dow City, lowa, being of sound mind and disposing mind and memory, and not acting under fraud, duress, menace, or the undue in- fluence of any person whatsoever, do make, publish, and declare this our last Will and Testament, in the manner following, that is to say: Bill Baber wills his vocal talents to Paul Leslie and his ability to write busi ness U, letters to Emmett Ahart. Norman Weed wills his knack of evading the teachers with his mischievous- ness to Perry Buff and Glenda's ring to Emmett Ahart. Glen Beam wills his athletic ability to Bonnie Ahart and his nickname, Sleepy, to Owen Leslie. To Donna Mae Brown, he leaves his ambition. Clara Mae Mathys wills her ability to get to the study hall before the bell rings to Lois Mayne, her interest in Earling to Dolores Dryden, and her baby- sitting ability to Paulene Thomsen who will need it. LaVonna Clothier wills her winning smile to Floy Baughman and Donna I-lamblen. She has enough for both. She also leaves her cheerleadingnability to James Trierweiler. Marilyn Smith leaves her bashfulness to Donna Brink and her figure to Clara Mae Bramley. She also wills her singing ability to Fern Cue. Betty Andersen wills her tactful way of refraining from whispering to Alice McDonald. She wills her secret ambition fto remain singlej to Mary Ellen Putnam. LaVerne Poitevin wills his nights at Arcadia Ball Room to Roland Sharp and his art of bachelorhood to Marty Furne. LaVonna Clothier and Clara Mae Mathys leave their lonely study hall to Duane Hard and Rosetta Brown. , To the Juniors, who with lots of good luck and industrious work may become Seniors next year, we will our nice, long, quiet evenings with Miss Thomps on: our skilled workmanship in Manual Trainings our long periods spent in practicing for band: our good manners in the lunch room at noon: our great acting ability: our record on the honor rollg and other abilities too numerous to mention to anyone who will take them. 19 School Days These years at school, we'll never forget At least the very last four. Don't think that all you do is sit, For it amounts to plenty more. As Freshmen, green as grass we came, Up four flights of rugged stairs. To seek some mischief was our aim, But the teachers changed our dares. Our Sophomore year was deader yet, For studying was no thrill. The Seniors told us not to fret, But to stay right in the mill. Another year soon rolled around, And as Juniors we were delighted. It wasn't so bad at last we found, For we weren't as apt to be slighted. But an honorable Senior is still the best For the door is opened wide, To opportunity which knocks and rests Until a career we do decide. So, underclassmen, do not pout For school is not so bad. For when it comes to getting out, We're sure you'll all feed sad. Marilyn Smith Z 0 .
